UN and Partners call for normative framework to support
safe mobility of Pastoralists
Research findings in Kenya’s cross-border regions reveal climate change-induced
mobility is on the rise and insecurity has heightened
The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Institute for Security
Studies (ISS) have partnered since January 2009 –June 2010 to assess the impact of Climate
Change and adaption strategies being implored by pastoralist communities.
The Inter-Agency Report reveals that:-
The effects of Climate Change are evident in the pastoralists border regions of Kenya
and are influencing mobility patterns amongst Pastoralist communities
Insecurity in Pastoralists border regions has increased
Some local governments facilitate cross-border pastoralist mobility especially during
drought
Mobility is often associated with conflict
Pastoralists are frustrated with short term aid and want sustainable solutions
A Call to Action (Normative Framework and SIM Approach) and the Report will be launched in
Nairobi, Kenya on 29 June 2010.
