An estimated 1.5 million people at-tended a Mass and liturgical proces-sion for the International Eucharistic Congress in the Philippines on 29 Jan. The Mass was held on the grounds of the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

Archbishop Martin said that the Church became present through the Eucharist.

“There is no Church without the Eu-charist. The Eucharist constructs the Church,” he said, according to CBCP News, adding that a Eucharistic com-munity must always be a caring one.

Choking the cultural, environmental heritage of Goa

by Bosco De Souza Eremita

Panaji: The mysterious death of a firebrand former Blessed Sacrament priest, Bismarque Dias, whose body in November was found floating in a river of Goa state, is still fresh in the minds of local peo-ple.

Dias had been waging a relentless battle to save the environment of this former Portuguese colony. Dias, like most other Goans, loved the palm-filled inlands, sandy beaches and struggled to preserve them. But he died in what is suspected to be a murder, and his funeral is still to take place pending a full investigation into his death, as demanded by his family.

Dias was a thorn in the side of industrialists and tycoons who see Goa’s rich natural resources as a means to augment their fortune. Three months after his death, the larger picture is becoming clear-er.

on Jan. 16, the state's pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government amended a state law to remove the coconut tree from the list of protected trees, claiming that under the existing law the felling of this tree needed government permission and that the process was too tedious.

Goa's Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar told media that classifying the coconut tree as a ‘tree’ was an error because botanically it is only a palm and not a tree.

More bizarre, anti-environment sentiments were echoed in the state legislature, where Arlekar men-tioned that too much green cover is a bad thing, while Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said mon-keys need to be classified as vermin because they destroy crops and fruits.

Actually, the issues are larger than coconut trees, greenery or monkeys. Coconut trees stand every-where in Goa and the law demanding permission to cut them down has become a bottleneck for industrialists waiting to buy land, clear it and start a business.

There are several major projects proposed which face public opposition — a golf course, an airport, defense facilities, as well as bridges and road widening schemes.

The state has over 25,000 hectares of land covered by coconut plantations, yielding about 1.3 million coconuts every year, though unofficially the figure is much higher. The tree is an integral part of local people’s life and culture. Its parts are used for building traditional homes and the coconut is used for cooking oil and medicines. But the government's interests are beyond local concerns.

As people objected to some state projects, Catholic priests joined the public outcry. Following oppo-sition from parishes and villages, the government on Feb. 3 indefinitely suspended a project that used

helicopters to bring tourists to Aguada, a heritage site rich in flora and fauna.

Elsewhere, village bodies have resolved to op-pose projects that are approved by the Invest-ment Promotion Board Act without their consent. The board purportedly aims at promoting invest-ment and some 50,000 jobs, empowers the state to acquire any type of land, even forests. Worse, acquisition of land through this act cannot be challenged in any court of law.

The government also amended the Town and Country Planning Act permitting “eco-tourism projects” within no development zones, where earlier no development, including eco-tourism projects, was permitted.

There are cases where Goans were not able to build even residential houses on plots because of regulations and restrictions on constructions on slopes and in coastal zones. Affluent business-men from outside the state, in cahoots with politi-cians and bureaucrats have managed to bypass laws to build gated palatial homes and hotels that leer at local people.

over the years, governments have had a notori-ously poor record regarding the environment, where sustainability is not a vital ingredient, while approving projects.

The projects underway in the state are bound to increase further an influx of outsiders, adversely affecting local culture. Goans are already feeling the heat of a burgeoning immigrant population, which is having a negative impact on the quality of life, with many Catholics preferring to move overseas.

This suits the BJP fine. The influx helps dilute Goan (read Indo-Portuguese) culture, predomi-nantly seen as Catholic, because the ultimate BJP objective is to obliterate all colonial vestiges, for the greater goal of moving towards a mono Hindu culture.

The BJP has rejected the demand for special status for Goa in an effort to restrict the influx of people from other parts of India.

This year being election year in the state, the BJP has bent over backwards to sanction projects at the cost of the environment and the people. In the process it chokes local interests and culture, giving freedom, power and wealth to outsiders to exploit locals, in a sure move towards its greater goal of a Hindu India.

Saint Valentine himself sent the first Valentine when enamored with his jailor's daughter he sent her a let-ter before his execution.

The British Library in London holds the oldest surviving valentine language, a poem composed in 1477 by Margery Brews to her fickle fiance but several existing historic valentines are from European lovers in the Victorian period and were hand made and hand-printed monstrosi-ties unlike mass-produced and slen-der greeting cards printed today.

In the Middle Ages Valentine greet-ings lovers said or sang their Valen-tines and written Valentines appeared after 1400 and the oldest existing Val-entine was made in the 1400s and is in the British Museum and Paper Val-entines were exchanged in Europe in place of Valentine gifts and were very popular in England.

In the early 1800s Valentine Day cards were assembled in factories and they were black and white pic-tures painted by factory workers.

Fancy Valentines were made with real lace and ribbons and paper lace was introduced in the mid 1800s and by the end of the 1800s Valentine Day cards were entirely machine made.

The European tradition of post-marking love letters in February trav-elled acroos the world due to the ef-forts of Esther Howland, a native of Worcester, Mass who graduated from Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in 1847 and in 1850 she was the first to publish and sell these cards in the United States.

The Esther Howland Paper Lace Valentine was rare and very few of her cards exist today measures 2 3/4 by 3 3/4 and is blank inside and all her cards were stamped on the back with her trademark H.

In the early 1900s a card company named Norcross was one of the first companies to manufacture Valentine Day cards.

Esther Howland started the Valen-tine Day card industry in the United

Besides Christmas Americans exchange more greeting cards on Valentine's Day than at any time of the year.

Thus we see the importance of Valentine Day's Cards which are used to send Valentine Day greet-ings and help to make Valentine's Day thoroughly enjoyable and at the same time add wit and spice to this festival.

51st IEC, Some Statistics

The week long 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC), from 24th Jan. to 31st Jan. 2016, saw the par-ticipation of faithful and clergy from across the globe. Pope Francis deliv-ered a personal video-message, with the announcement that the next IEC will be held in Budapest, Hungary in 2020.

The IEC issued a final ‘vision’ statement: “Now is the time to relive the beautiful experience of the two disciples of Emmaus, when they en-countered the Risen Lord in Sacred Scripture and in the Breaking of the Bread (Luke 24:13-35); not only as the “Bread of life” (John 6:25-59), but also as the ‘Bread of Hope’, ‘Bread for Poor’, ‘Bread of Dialogue’, and ‘Bread for Mission’! Well, here are some brief eight statistics:

1. 15,000 delegates from over 70 countries.

2. 5,000 children received their First Holy Communion.

3. Torch-light procession of over 2 million people stretching over 5km.

4. Participation of over 2 million laity at the closing Mass.

5. Church mounted a record-setting media coverage.

Filipinos do three things really well: sing, dine and enjoy celebrating their faith; so much so that Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York publicly expressed his gratitude:

6. To the many Filipino Priests who have taken over parishes in Eu-rope and North America, due to lack of local vocations.

7. To the Filipino doctors, nurs-es and care-givers, who have staffed American health services.

8. To their computer program-mers, artists and engineers, who have enriched civic life.

All of them express joyfully and fully

how “Jesus came that they may have life in abundance” (cf. John 10:10).

Why This Gross Injustice

Lifetime pension for one tenure of politicians is gross injustice to the rest of the government servants who have to put in minimum years of ser-

vice, not less than 20 years, and drain on public exchequer. Citizens of India need to fight to reverse this policy by the Govt.

No one has been able to explain to me why young men & women serve in the Military for 20 years or more, risking their lives protecting your free-dom only get 50% of their pay on re-tirement & Short Service Officers risk their life for term varying from 5-14 yrs and get ZERO retirement benefits af-ter retirement.

While Politicians hold their political positions in the safe confines of the capital, protected by these same men & women, and receive Full-Pay on re-tirement after serving one term. Does it make any sense?

—Robert Crasta

There is no doubt that by and large, there is disillusion-ment in our country today. The promise of “Ache Din”

by the present party in power, both at the centre and in the state of Ma-harashtra, remains a dream. Slowly and steadily, we have been seeing breakdown of system, continuing corruption, bribery, scams, intoler-ance, communal disharmony; taxes being increased on one pretext or the other with no tangible benefits for the common man. And we wonder whether we can do anything about it. Haven’t we had enough of this ? But we are unable to tell the government, ‘enough is enough’ !

In this dismal scenario, we can now only look up to the judiciary to do something. At this juncture, comes a newsreport (The Times of India dated 3.2.2016) which says, while ‘expressing serious concern over the ever-growing number of corruption cases, the Nagpur bench of Bom-bay High Court has called on citizens to raise voice against "this menace" and "refuse to pay taxes by launching a non-cooperation movement" if the government fails to control it.

The court was hearing the antici-

patory bail application of a district manager in Bhandara who was ac-cused of embezzling funds of Rs.24 crore meant for distribution to poor members of the Matang community. Justice Arun Chaudhari has had the courage to say, it is high time citizens came together to tell their govern-ments that they have had enough. "The miasma (unholy atmosphere) of corruption can be beaten if all work together. If it continues, taxpayers' should refuse to pay taxes through a non-cooperation movement." Com-ing from the Judiciary, this may seem a little shocking – the guardians of the law asking the citizens to revolt, but that is exactly what is required today. We need somebody to lead the revolt. Yes, we need to stand up and tell the government, “Enough is Enough !”

This February, the coconut trees that line the highways and spill out of the plantations and orchards of Goa will wear

their bleeding hearts on their trunks as a sign of their doomed status! The people of Goa, helpless before an ad-ministration that chooses to ignore the danger of escalating climate change, as a result of large-scale slaughter of trees, have decided to embrace the trees as their valentines. But will it move those who make wealth their Valentine?

In the winter session of the Goa state Assembly, the BJP-led government ensured the passage of The Goa Preservation of Trees (Amendment) Bill which relocated the coconut tree from Section 1 (a) to Section 12 (a) of the ‘The Goa, Daman and Diu Preser-vation of Trees Act’. The law came into effect immediately. It was reported that activists and opposition parties alleged that the government effected the change in law because it is “only interested in facilitating big projects by massacring coconut trees in large numbers”. There were reactions from locals who consider the coconut palm synonymous of their beloved land. There is a fear that this change in law will be misused to grab land by clear-ing the coconut groves and turn Goa into a concrete jungle!

‘The Herald’ the newspaper which calls itself the voice of Goa, asked a pertinent question on its pages, “Who is the government to classify the co-conut tree as grass?”, clearly reflect-ing the mood of the people. “With the government amending the Trees Act to renounce the ‘tree status’ for the co-conut tree, it is now possible for indus-trialists and builders to assert their will on coconut plantations. With the tree now being given the status of a shrub, builders do not need to approach the forest department to cut them, thus in-creasing manifold the amount of land to build on. The coconut is vital to the lifestyle and culture of every Goan. Even the simplest fish curry is made with a coconut base. Hence, by get-ting rid of coconut trees in the state, Goan livelihood and culture will be compromised.” says the Herald in an interview conducted by Sujay Gupta.

Therefore the question posed by the sons of the soil of Goa has raised the banner of revolt against the possibility of rampant corruption. Another voice reiterates this opinion. “on the one hand, the BJP wants to protect the cow saying it is a holy animal, but is giving a free licence to cut coconut trees, which is also holy and called a 'kalpvriksha' in Goa. By saying the coconut is not a tree, the government is making way for easy slaughter of coconut palms for real estate devel-opment," independent legislator from Fatorda, Vijai Sardesai, told IANS. “The coconut tree in tropical Goa is often referred to as the kalpvriksha, a mythical wish-fulfilling tree which finds

reference in Vedic scriptures, due to its immense utility value.”

Why is it a ‘ kalpvriksha’, a wish ful-filling tree? Down the Western Coast where coconut palm grows wildly, it is looked upon by the locals as a tree that gives every part of it to be used by hu-mans. The palm and its fruit are exten-sively used for various purposes. No cooking is complete without the use of the coconut kernel. The dried copra yields precious coconut oil, used for cooking as well as for manufacturing products. Sap from the tender top is turned into toddy and vinegar. Coco-nut shells are used as ladles, while the husk becomes coir for fuel and to make ropes and stuff mattresses. The wood is turned into rafters for the roof and the fronds are used as thatching by the poor. Can this tree be a grass to those who look for branches and while missing the fruits?

In Goa and elsewhere too, people treasure these trees so much that co-conut trees are never cut unless ab-solutely necessary. It is not unusual to see houses and roofs constructed awkwardly or unevenly contoured to accommodate a palm tree! To oppose the government’s move of facilitating the destruction of these trees environ-mentalists in Goa are conducting the “ CHIPKo” movement, hugging the trees, this Valentine’s day….

The local Herald newspaper also re-ported that one of the first beneficiaries of this seemingly quixotic decision is a company called Vani Agro which has

been allowed to build a distillery in Sangeum taluka in the southern part of the state on a plot with around 500 palm trees on it. With the species hav-ing been removed from the purview of the Goa Daman and Diu Preser-vation of Trees Act, the company will not need permission from the Forest Department to fell the trees. If the law of the land has to be amended to fa-cilitate one particular Business House to have a free hand, surely the said Company must wield immense power and wealth! If not it is important to the people of Goa to know why it was done.

The Herald further continues its inves-tigation- the Company Vani Agro was given clearance by the Investment Promotion Board (IPB) to do a hatch-et-kind of exercise, where they can violate every law of the land. The new IPB Act basically allows you to give permissions to areas by notifying it as an IPB area. once that happens, every

law of the land – the Regional Plan, the Town and Country Planning Act, the Goa Land Act – falls completely. However, the concerned party would have had to go to the Forest Depart-ment to get permission to fell trees. That became a huge stumbling block for big projects. This has been done to ensure that this stumbling block is removed. Ultimately, the head of that company went on record to Herald to actually stated that they can carry out their project without having to go to the Forest Department to cut coconut tries. His statement made reporters realise that this connect is very seri-ous!

Why is it a serious matter? Why should the citizens sit up and take note? Dr. Claude Alvares, a green campaigner of the ‘Goa Foundation’ that fights to conserve environment has this to say, “The coconut tree was the first victim. The second victim was proposed to be the cashew tree. Leading Hotels would like to cut down all cashew trees. That entire hillside is infested with them. The cashew tree falls within the definition of a tree and it is covered by the Trees Act. once it is covered by the Act, you have problems. You can cut only this amount every year: one hectare per permission and you can be given only two permissions every year. The golf course would take around 15 years to construct. By the time you cut down all the trees, you’ll never be able to construct a golf course. The proposal went up to the highest rungs of the government to also exclude the cashew. You can i magine the sate of Goa if you exclude the coconut tree and cashew tree from the definition of tree. What else is left in Goa? From that the government will go further. It will go to the jackfruit tree and mango tree. Who has given this power to the government to de-clare what is a tree and what is not a tree? Are the Chief Minister and Envi-ronment Minister botanists first of all? Don’t they know that these species are mentioned as trees in all botany books? Do we mention the coconut tree as a coconut bush? Just because it is an elected government, it does not mean it can suddenly decide water is not water and the Western Ghats are

not the Western Ghats and mining is agriculture. This nonsense has to stop and the people must object.”

Yes, the citizens of this country need to wake up and object to Mother India being denuded, decimated, tarnished and turned into a barren land. The na-ture and environment are the rich re-sources that belong to the people of this land. Not only in Goa, but all over the country, (e.g. Uttarakhand floods a year ago) rampant destruction of nature is altering the lay of the land and causing climate change and other calamities. In the absence of opposi-tion, with such politicians who cannot realise the importance of conserving nature, things will only get worse.

Prajal Sakhardande, a Goan Historian says, “This government has crossed all limits. This is the last nail in their coffin. As Claude Alvares rightly said, who is the government to classify the coconut tree as grass? Just because they have been elected, they do not have the power to redefine every as-pect of Goa. Do we have to alter our textbooks to suit these people? Are they educated people? This govern-ment is anti-environment, anti-peo-ple, anti-Goa. They have done this to please the builders.”

When Meetings and seminars are be-ing conducted all over by concerned environmentalists to spread aware-ness of the need to protect environ-ment, have the elected representa-tives of the people formed a nexus with builders to work for their gains? Again, a pertinent question…

Modi's govern-ment recently approved chang-es to a Bill that seeks to regu-late the country's property market, notorious for black money and delayed posses-sions. The Real Estate (Regula-tion and Development) Bill, 2013 is aimed to protect the interest of con-sumers from errant developers and ensure timely execution of projects.

Here are 10 ways how the Bill will help property buyers:

1) Each state will get a real estate regulator, which will settle disputes and impose compensation. All hous-ing and commercial projects will have to be compulsorily registered with the regulator so that buyers can have access to genuine projects. on-going projects that have not received completion certificates will also be covered.

2) Developers cannot advertise or launch projects without prior registra-tion with the real estate authority.

3) Sale of property on the basis of super area (area in which a flat is spread plus common area such as lobby) will be prohibited. Develop-ers will have to advertise carpet area, which is the area enclosed within the walls of a flat, for sale.

4) Developers will have to disclose layout plans and submit clearances with the regulator. They will also have to name the contractor, architect, structural engineer, etc. associated with the project. This will ensure trans-parency about property projects.

5) To ensure projects are completed on time, promoters will have to de-posit 50 per cent of the amounts real-ized from buyers in a separate bank account within 15 days.

6) Developers will need the consent of two-third buyers to alter plans, structural designs and specifica-tions of the building. They will have the responsibility to rectify structural defects and refund money in cases of default.

7) Brokers, who intend to sell flats and plots in a project, will also have to get registered with the real estate regulator. They will be punished for non-compliance.

8) Buyers can claim refund with inter-est and compensation if promoters fail to deliver projects in time.

9) If rules are violated, projects will be de-registered and penalties will be imposed on the developer. Non-compliance will attract fine up to 10 per cent of project cost. Misinforma-tion will attract fine of 5 per cent of project cost.

10) Builders often demand part pay-ment in cash, making many ordinary buyers party to corruption. The Bill will help curb undeclared "black mon-ey" in property markets that costs the government billions of rupees in lost taxable income.

L’osservatore Romano, on 1st. Feb. 2016, reported Pope Francis recall-ing the story of David during a hom-ily at Mass at Santa Marta – The 1st reading of the story of King David (Second Book of Samuel, 15:13-14,30; 16:5-13). A brief summary of the Pope’s message:

“David is able to see the signs: It is the moment of his humilia-tion; it is the moment in which he is paying for his faults. But basically, he entrusts himself to the Lord. This is David’s path from the corruption of sin, to trusting in the Lord. This is holiness. This is humility!”“But humility”, Pope Francis

no Humility Without Humiliation…

revealed, “can reach the heart only through humiliation! If you are unable to bear some humiliation in your life, you are not humble. That’s how it is; simple mathematics!”

“For this reason”, the Pope contin-ued, “the goal of holiness that God gives to his children, He gives to the Church, comes through the humilia-tion of His Son; Who allows Himself to be cursed, scourged, and finally “Who humbled Himself by being obedient to the point of death, even death on a Cross” (Philippines 2:8).

Have a careful look of so-cial books of these years. As soon as the Bhartiya

Janata party came to power, their first work was to change the his-tory of freedom struggle. For years and years we studied the name wise and date-wise movement of freedom struggle. We repeatedly read the names of Nehru-Gandhi families. Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Firoz Gandhi, Indira Gan-dhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Mahtma Gandhi, Vijyalaxmi Pandit, Krishna Hathis-ingh, and so on. All these names and their contribution to the na-tion are smartly removed from the newly. Written history books of the Bjp days! Today’s younsters know nothing about these heroes . For years they were jailed and harassed by the British rule. The Sangh has, It seems, a secret agenda, to elimi-nate these and many more names from the history books. The former educaion minister under the vaj-payee regeme, Dr. S.M joshi and his team saw to it that the Nehru-Gandhi families should not be highlightened at all !

The P.M. Narendra Modi wanted to stop the sale of Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi postal stamps. Blamed for Gandhi murder, they have an inrinsic elergy for the Fa-ther of the Nation, M.K. Gandhi ! The BJP love for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel makes one laugh because it was Patel who, as the Home Minis-ter, Banned the RSS. The BLP men do not want to hear that it was Pate 1 who was a staunch congress-man, and did not want the RSS to be in India. But the BJP historians do not want the name of Congress Party.... BJP was no where - abso-lutely no where during the freedon struggle days.

Saffronization of Freedom Struggle

The unprecedented victory of BJP in polls is not because of their merit, it is only the week and poor leadership in the Congress party. This is how historians see the rise of Bjp and the fall of the Congress. Good things done ny Congress are not effectively highlighted by the party and the BJP is well versed to dig out many skeleton from every every govermn nt cup-board against Congress ! Dr. Man-mohan Singh is a better teacher than a politician. Unhappily, his tenure is painted as the most cor-rupt time of the post independent era. Modi and his jonnies leave no opportunity to tarnish Congress because of pooe and weak lead-ership in Congress. Thr power centre was Sonia’s house and not the prime Minister’s office. The fall of the party began here.... Rahul has been a ‘baba’ for Modi and his men. All these and many more reasons were enough to lead Con-gress out of power.

PM Modi should know that power corrupts and absoulute power corrupts abslutely. The BJP suc-ceeded in fooling all people for some time, it is failing to fool all the people for all the time... A be Linco in will always be remem-bered..... BJP’s intolerance has come to fore. Independent social and political pundits believe that very soon people of India will rea-lise who has been a true lover of this vast nation India.

Relationship should be nur-tured and should be taken extra care off. There are some things that are just

relationship killers. These are things you want to avoid at all costs. Listed here are things you shouldn’t do in a relationship that can kill it

name-Callingone of the biggest relationship

killers is name-calling. It is often done in anger but it is a habit that needs to be broken. Changing this habit gives your relationship a healthier founda-tion.

CheatingIt is almost certain death to your

relationship. While some couples do manage to work through this issue, they are few and far between. Cheat-ing causes the end of a large percent-age of relationships when it occurs in them. If you are tempted to cheat, ask yourself why. If you feel your part-ner isn’t meeting your needs, that is a topic to talk to them about instead of going elsewhere to get your needs met.

Hidden insultsHidden insults are the kinds of

things that are said with sarcasm or

are hidden in an insincere compli-ment. An insincere compliment is when the goal is to appear as if you are giving a compliment but you are really insulting someone. Never in-sults your husband.

LyingTo have a healthy relationship,

you need to have honesty. Lies kill relationships. Always choose to be honest with one another even if it is painful. Discuss this and come to an agreement that honesty is what you always want between you. Then ap-preciate this quality in your partner.

Refusing of apologiseIn any relationship, there are go-

ing to be times when you hurt one an-other because you are human. After all, no one is perfect. it is best to be able to say you are sorry when you do something hurtful toward your partner. It isn’t a shame to say you are sorry. It shows that you care more about the other person than your pride.

FightingIt makes you look bad to your

friends and family. of course there may be times that you feel like arguing with your partner in front of others but don’t give in to that temptation. Wait until you are alone before you handle

It is quite easy to get into a relationship but maintaining it is a big deal. Everything seems to be relish-ing at the initial stage of a relationship but with time it should be maintained

the issue. Never make your personal issues out of the house.

Playing blame gameTell your partner clearly what they

did to hurt you. Accept responsibil-ity when you are srong. Expect your partner to do the same.

How to save relationshipHidden false beliefs is the one and only reason why you are having relationship problems. If you want to save your relation-ship, you must know the role of beliefs in destroying your relationship. It you want to get a second chance to save your relationship, you must stop act-ing in the ways that are rooted in your beliefs and start to get the results you’ve been search-ing for.

The Economics Of GoldGold is a special

type of commod-ity. It is beautiful,

useful, durable, hard to counterfeit and it last that is why people be-gan to use it as a cur-rency. Nowadays, gold itself has very little direct impact on the economy, but its price signal about the underlying state of the econo-my. Uncertain times, people buy gold because it is viewed as a safe asset and it price rise. India is the largest importer of gold in the world. Get to know the economics of the ‘Gold Market’

Why invest in goldInvesting in gold is for those who are looking for good long term returns. Gold does not generally show sharp daily gains and is not the right vehicle for those looking to get rich quick. However, with some luck in timing, long term return on invest-ment can be very profitable. Also, when the value of the U.S dollar becomes unstable, people return to the stable metal- gold.

The price of goldGold prices are kept stable through agreement of the world’s major central banks and the International Monetary Fund. Members, including Europe, the United States, Japan, Aus-tralia the bank for International Settlements and the Inter-national Monetary Fund, agree to limit their sales of gold to maintain its price integrity. You can check the price of gold everyday in newspapers, jewellery shops and financial web-sites and T.V channels

Gold biscuitsGold coin, bars and biscuits are your most economical bet for investment. They do not attract making charges and you can always exchange the gold for jewellery at a later date. If you intend to sell the coins, be prepared to take at least a four percent cut. That’s not the case with bars and biscuits.

Importance of E.T.F.SGold exchange traded funds (ETFs) are like gold in pa-

per form and work like mutual funds. The money you invest in gold ETFs enjoys certain advantages such as purity and safety. It is the responsibility of the custodian appointed by the mutual fund to ensure its safe.

Keeping large quantity of gold with you attracts wealth tax; gold in ‘Demat form’ does not. Beside; it can be bought and sold at any time during trading hours, making it a desir-able long term investment option.

To get the benefit of ‘Long-term investment’; one needs to hold on to physical gold for three years. But with gold ETFs, in just one year, you can avail the benefits of long-term invest-ment.

ETFs keep track of the price of gold in India and other major markets around the world. Shares are then traded in the open markets to maximise profits based on the trends of the day

The Season of Lent has arrived in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Lent will bear abundant fruit should we lean on the trust

in mercy, faith, Christ and forgiveness through the next four weeks.

The Missionaries of Charity’s concep-tion of mercy is to dispel the misery in others through personal action. The theology of mercy has parameters set for a wider pastoral mission to elevate the faith by prayer, meditation and in-volvement in the suffering of others.

The stimulus for mercy is to be found in human misery and distress. Mercy plays a dynamic role in the theme of each year’s Lenten preparation. St. Thomas in his famous ‘Summa Theo-

logiae’ said, the nature of mercy is a virtue.

Lent is time for soul-searching and repentance. In the early years of the Church lent was instituted as a prepa-ratory time for Easter. The forty days of lent is to inspire the people of God to imitate the weeks when Christ with-drew into the desert.

Lent is also the time when you must brave the sin, hate, revenge and greed our enemies have for us. Be compassionate and merciful. It is the most difficult thing to do, as we are humans. overcome the desire to re-taliate; reach out to help those who are so brainwashed they cannot help themselves.

Do you know that Sundays are not counted in the period of lent? Sun-day commemorates the Resurrec-

tion. In our Roman Catholic faith lent officially ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. Throughout the Christian world churches are decorated in ei-ther purple or blue: symbolic colours to welcome the King,

Lent is a time to broker a spiritual ceasefire; to use the language of prayer, mercy and forgiveness as a candid option to make the forces of evil retreat. Let us be merciful, for mercy and compassion can heal the wounds and scars of families.

Weep for your enemies and for those who blindly follow the wicked ambi-tions of their leaders. Pray for the re-lease of people from the power of Sa-tan. Show your generous compassion and mercy. The hour is at hand. Tell this to yourself throughout the period of lent.

In our reality, we are bombarded with messages of rampant con-sumerism, accumulation, money, and advertisements at every turn,

because our economy thrives off of people buying things they don’t really need.We have been tricked into believ-ing that the key to happiness lies with-in our purchases, when it really begins within ourselves.Lately, though, mini-malism seems to be gaining traction as more people realize that they have no use or interest in participating in conspicuous consumption anymore. If you want to downsize here is some motivation for you

you will have less to worry about:As you detach yourself from the end-less, unsatisfying paradigm of getting into debt to buy things you don’t really want or need, you will find a very wel-coming reality on the other side of that – one of sheer peace and bliss. In the end, you don’t really own the stuff you buy; it ends up owning you instead. So, as you reduce the amount of clut-ter in your house and focus more on lasting sources of happiness that lie within you, you will eliminate a big source of stress and anxiety from your life. Many people report that finances are a major source of distress in their daily lives, so by drastically cutting back on your consumption, you will feel a huge weight lifted from your shoulders.

you will feel liberated:Many people buy new things that are out of their price range to simply im-press others. They want others to no-tice them, praise them, and feel happy for them. However, that temporary satisfaction you gain from other’s ac-knowledgment quickly fades, and you will always need to buy more, have more, and be more in order to keep their attention.

When you adopt a minimalist lifestyle, however, you start to remember what really matters in life. You see that you don’t need to impress others; all you need to do is feel content with your-self, and that comes from your own heart.

you will have more money to spend on experiences: Another bonus to living a simpler life is that you will have a newfound inter-est in spending your money creating memories rather than stuff. After all, studies have shown that people who spend money on experiences rather than things are much happier at the end of the day. Minimalists value a trip across the world more than buy-ing a new suit, and it’s easy to see why. Meeting new people, exploring uncharted territory, and growing as a person offer a chance to feel alive.

you can focus more on your own passions: By spending less time worrying about buying new items to replace ones that aren’t “trending” or fashionable any-more, you can put your attention to-ward what you feel passionate about. Maybe you have been wanting to train for a marathon or go exploring in your state, or take up a painting class at your local museum. The possibilities are endless when you strip away what

weighs you down and put your en-ergy into your personal interests and desires.

you create more physical and men-tal space:

M i n i m a l i s m goes far be-yond clearing up space in your home or apartment; it cleanses the soul and re-vitalizes the heart. It makes you feel em-powered and liberated, leav-

ing behind ideals that only lead to dis-appointment and stress from trying to make it in the rat race. It gives clarity, and a chance to start anew with fresh ideas and inspirations about what you want to accomplish, and offers a well-spring of opportunities for how to cap-ture the true essence of life.

The word “antichrist” means in opposition to Christ. So this diabolic evil power is op-posed to or putting itself in

place of Christ meaning attempting to counterfeit or to be a manufactured false representation. Antichrist is a Christian term based on interpretation of passages in the New Testament in which the term “antichrist” occurs 5 times in 1Jn & 2, Jn in plural terms and 4 times in the singular. In 1 John 2:18 the term implies a particular man who, before the Second Coming Christ, will persecute the Church with a ferocity never before experienced. 1 John 2:22 tells us that anyone who opposes the Father is an antichrist. In 1John 4:3 says, "Every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus does not belong to God. This is the spirit of the antichrist that, as you have heard, is to come, but in fact is already in the world". Since Jesus and St. Paul ominously warns us in the scriptures (Math24:25) (2Thes2:3-4) “ahead of time”, should this not be an urgent message the church needs to hear! Are we spiritually preparing our mind, soul and heart to over comers for what for what may soon come to pass?

Who or what is the Antichrist? In order to understand the Antichrist one should know who is Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God, and have knowledge of the Scriptures. Like Je-sus Christ, Antichrist will be brought up in obscurity; he will lead a hidden life until the time comes when he will begin his public career. This asser-tion is founded on the words of Daniel (11:21).

“Antichrist will be born of Hebrew par-ents, He will come from the tribe of Dan as Samson, Judas Iscariot. His mother will be a harlot possessed by the devil. Antichrist, the son of per-dition will be born in Corozain, and will be brought up in Bethsaida and according to what Jesus said in the Gospel: "Woe to thee Corozain ... woe

to thee Bethsaida ... and thou Caphar-naum that art exalted up to heaven, thou shalt be thrust down to hell. (Luke, 10:13).The Antichrist is not fic-tional. He is a real person with fullness of evil, who will appear on the world scene at the end of the times and will sit upon the throne on the Temple Mount in (Jerusalem). The Antichrist is the antithesis of everything that Christ is. Satan aims to replace God in these last days by deceiving people into fol-lowing Antichrist, who appears spiri-tual and holy. The prophecies of Dan-iel and Revelation exposes Satan's traps and strategies and lead people to anchor in Jesus and His Word for safety. The Antichrist is the fullness of evil, falsehood, hate and pride. He will reject the humble, glorify sinners and teach vices contrary to Christian virtues. However, there is only one entity that specifically fulfills all the prophesied characteristics of the Anti-christ. In Daniel chapters 7 and 8 and in Revelation chapter 13, you will find at least 10 identifying traits of the Anti-christ. The most solemn curse in all of Scripture is pronounced upon those who worship the “beast” and his im-age and receive his mark, of the beast, on the right hand and forehead with-out which one cannot buy or sell. Anti-Christ, will mesmerize and shake the world with his evil presence, Antichrist will not be the incarnation of Lucifer, he will be the on the negative side of Christ, he will be in league with Lucifer, and will seduce the world leaders and institutions, to rebel against God and will proclaim himself to be God; he will be a Jew and lead Israel to accept him as the Messiah. His rule over the whole world will be for a short period of 3.5 years. Those who accept him will bear his mark, or sign. one-third of the conquered peoples will refuse

to obey him. He will persecute and torture them. But God will not forsake the Faithful. The Jews will then finally accept Christ as the True Messiah.

Meaning of 666“6” is the number of sin and the fear of the number “666” Hexakosio-ihexekontahexaphobia. This figure appears in Revelation13:18.”There is need to be shrewd here: if anyone is clever enough he may interpret the number of the beast; it is the num-ber of a man (antichrist), the number ”666”. In the book of Daniel, Nebu-chadnezzar, the king, made an image of gold whose height was 60 cubits, don’t bother translating them into our measurements, you need to use the Bible measurements, the numbers mean something; “60 cubits high, 6 cubits wide, and the last 6 is the musi-cal instruments under his feet” And in Hebrew if it doesn’t give the depth it would be because it’s the same as the width. You can look at that in the build-ing of the sanctuary, even the ark, a lot of parallel dimensions there, which means it would be 60 by 6 by 6. Now is that starting to ring true when you get to Revelation 13 and they’re told to worship or be killed? In Hebrew 666 mean (Vav Vav Vav)

The Koran mentions that 666 is the dis-tance between the Kaaba (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia, to the dome of the rock on the Temple mount (Jerusalem). The other translation of 666 means numbers 1 to 36 represented the 36 constellations which were also gods and the sum total of all the numbers adds to 666 (Babylonian Sun Seal square). The seat of satan is in Turkey (Pergamum) Rev.2:13.

THE TWo WITnESSES The Gospels of Mathew (17:1-8), Mark(9:2-8) and Luke(9:28-36) men-tions that at the transfiguration Je-sus took with Him the apostles Peter, James and John and led them to a high mountain where they could be alone. In their presence Jesus was transfigured. His clothes became

By Bishop Thomas Dabre

ST PAULS, 58/23rd Road, TPS III, Bandra West, Mumbai 400 050ISBN 978-93-5015-269-0

A book that speaks volumes for the priestly, pastoral heart of a bishop! What one reads between the covers of SHEPHERDING GoD’S PEoPLE is an updated version of Bishop Thom-as Dabre’s thoughts and reflections, talks and experiences published in various periodicals during his 45 year-long pastoral ministry. As bish-op for the past 26 years, his ministra-tions have benefitted three dioceses in particular viz., Bombay, Vasai and Poona. As such, this is Bishop Dab-re’s Silver Jubilee keepsake brought to you by ST PAUL’S!

The teachings of the Church are essentially based on both Sacred Scripture and Tradition. According-ly, the text covers a gamut of topics associated with the Catholic Faith, each touching the reader to the core of one’s being. Challenging in terms of understanding the Faith of our Fathers, it makes the reader literally want to read the Holy Bible on one hand and, on the other, study the nu-merous Papal Encyclicals that have served to strengthen the Church’s own grasp on the world and its myr-iad contradictions. Indeed, a curso-ry glance at the subjects—46 to be precise!—listed in the ‘contents’ can be an eye opener in terms of what to expect in the text: service, disciple-ship, liturgy, Mary, the family, educa-tion, youth, children, commitment, migrants and so on. Indeed, Bishop

Dabre’s Secretary, Father Roque Green, puts it well when he says that His Lordship, whom the late Cardinal Simon Pimenta described as a ‘21st Century Bishop’, “firmly believes that as Christians, we in the Church can-not live isolated lives but as persons in community. After all, we are God’s people – the flock of Jesus Christ, a Spirit-filled community” (p 9).

Bishop Dabre brings to bear on the book’s contents his multifaceted experience that includes his first en-counter with Pope Saint John Paul II during his first visit to India, his in-volvement in inculturation and inter-faith dialogue as professor of Theol-ogy and chairman of the National Catechetical and Liturgical Centre of the CBCI and so much else. This 207 page book (Rs 200 only) is all the more desirable given the fact that Bishop Dabre’s penchant for interact-ing with people of all faiths as well as no faith, apart from his own flock, has earned him the sobriquet “The Lis-tening Bishop”! Media savvy and ex-tremely articulate, he’s a bishop with an ear to the ground and a hand on the pulse of his flock, truly the “pas-tor with the smell of sheep” that Pope Francis so ardently desires his bish-ops and priests to be.

Shepherding God’s People

dazzlingly white and Moses and Eli-jah appeared and were talking with Jesus. These two witnesses Moses and Elijah will come down to earth again bodily to Jerusalem. They will evangelize to the Jews for 3.5 years. The Jews from all over the world will be drawn to Jerusalem and assemble at the Temple mount to hear the Gos-pel preached by the two witnesses. Moses and Elijah will expose every devilish trickery of the Antichrist to the Jews. During the Jewish festival the Passover, Revelation 11.says the Beast (Antichrist) will kill these two wit-nesses and leave their dead bodies on the street of Jerusalem exposed. The present world which is under the shadow of Satan will rejoice and celebrate their deaths, but after 3.5 days they will be resurrected and as-cend to heaven.(Rev 11:11-12-15) for after 3 days according to the Jewish culture the Spirit of the dead leaves the body. Israel having now received the Gospel of Christ will give glory to “Yeshua Hamashiach” (Hebrew for “Jesus the Messiah). The Archangel Gabriel with a loud shout will blow the trumpet, before the Son of God ap-pears on the clouds surrounded by legions of angels shining in glory, He will be riding on a white horse wearing the crown of royalty and authority. He will land on the Mount Ascension and will pass through the mount of olives and through the Kedron Valley enters thru the Eastern Gate (Golden Gate), which is presently sealed off by the Muslims and the grounds outside the entrance of the Gate converted into a burial ground saying that the Messiah will not pass through the graves to en-ter the Temple Mount. The first time He entered thru this gate was on Palm Sunday riding a colt and the crowds shouting Hosanna! Finally He will put to death the Antichrist, and all his fol-lowers by His Breath (Holy Spirit). This will herald the end of time and the be-ginning of the general judgment.

Inspiration!

you can have a high IQ, but if you do not have a match-ing emotional in-

telligence, you would ei-ther be the mad genius or a complete stranger to a lot of people. A decent lev-el of emotional intelligence is needed for everyone so they can get along well with people. Emotional in-telligence can get you into a lot of awkward situations in life. Emotional intelli-gence is all about know-ing and anticipating others behaviors and also knowing the right way to re-spond or behave. It is within you and also stimulated by other people at times. Here are some signs that you are emotionally intelligent.

you do not let yourself get hurt by other people: A good sign that you are emotionally intelligent is when you do not let others easily affect you or hurt you. You are emotionally stable and to intelligent to know that others hurt you for their own purposes and that you should not be wasting time thinking about them.

You can easily figure out what’s wrong with you: Being emotionally intelligent does not mean that you would not get into trouble but you will be intelligent enough to figure out what got you into trouble in the first place. You will also wise up pretty fast

you do not stay in abusive relation-ships: When you are emotionally in-telligent you stay away from relation-ships that can turn abusive. You do

not let yourself be manipulated emo-tionally by your partner and will hold your ground or get out of it soon.

you never complain that you let someone take advantage of you: If you have noticed that you never com-plain about having taken advantage of, you are clearly emotionally intelli-gent. You never let anyone get the bet-ter of you and you do what you want to do and do not make compromises that can put you in a disadvantageous position.

you are sensitive: A sensitive nature comes together with emotional intel-ligence. It does not mean that you are soft, but it just means that you are sensible to other people’s emotions and needs and you act accordingly. You are very clear about how you want to be treated and create a scene or cause a drama at the slightest of provocation. You are generally ma-ture enough to handle things without blowing off your top.

you know when to say no: You know that pleasing people all the time is definitely not possible and you do not

you can get along with life with a low IQ but a low level of emotional intel-ligence (EI) can get you into a lot of awkward situation in life. Find out if you are emotionally intelligent

“Did clinical depression kill Ro-hith Vemula or did a cultural cartel?

There are reasons why ‘both’ does not make for a robust answer,” writes Manu Joseph in a recent article in Hindu-stan Times. According to him, it can’t be both and he argues that those who insist that he was pushed to suicide by the blatant and sickening caste discrimination in the Univer-sity are denying him the right to his personhood, the right to be ‘clinically depressed’. “Is a Dalit activist allowed to be ‘clin-ically depressed’,” he asks.

The underlying assumptions of his argu-ment are imagining one’s inner and outer worlds as water tight compartments and seeing clinical depression as a disease stemming from somewhere within the so-called inner world of a person’s mind. Is a ‘clinically depressed’ person allowed to be oppressed, one may ask Mr. Joseph. But he is not alone in his arguments and assumptions. The same logic was applied when 22-year-old medical student Jas-preet Singh in AIIMS, who was routinely failed in exams by one professor, com-mitted suicide in January 2008. College authorities tried to put his suicide down to depression despite Singh explicitly men-tioning said professor’s name in his sui-cide note.

Manish Kumar Guddolian, a 20-year-old Dalit student at IIT Roorkee, jumped to his death from the fifth floor of his hostel in 2011. The police again put the cause of death down to depression, but his family members had another story to tell of the many months of bullying he faced in col-lege from a group of students who tried to put him down by calling him names like ‘chamar’ and circulating a video of his photos to be laughed at.

In all these cases, depression is cited as the ’cause’ of suicide in order to absolve everything else and shift the blame on a person’s individual psyche. The point is

not to deny the existence of depression and its linkages to suicides (which cannot be captured by a simple cause and effect

relationship), but rather to under-stand its very existence where it is not located only as an illness in someone’s individual psyche and ‘personal problems’. Though the equation of depression with a dis-ease or an illness seems to give some relief to the people going through it as they can be relieved of the burden and stigma of being ‘weak-willed’ or ‘not being strong enough’ to be suffering and disin-tegrating thus. But ultimately it lo-cates the problem within the per-son which one gets one fine day and which can be diagnosed and

‘treated’ and then one can be successfully reintegrated into ‘normal’ society.

Depression does not emerge in a vacuum but from the very pressures and travails of the ‘normal’ society with its codes of nor-mative behaviours and expectations and life conditions. Higher education institu-tions today have become hubs of depres-sion and suicides are only a very small and extreme manifestation of it. Though there aren’t any statistics available for In-dian Universities yet, during the journey to an M.phil degree, what I have seen in my time at university is an epidemic of students struggling with what are called ‘mental health’ difficulties, every third per-son slyly looking for ‘help’ (counselling/medication) filled with guilt, shame and a sense of personal failure.

To understand this epidemic of depres-sion among students, we need to look at and question the conditions of education in our higher education institutions. The constant pressures of scoring well, meet-ing deadlines, increasing workload, ideas of excellence, competition, alienation, lack of space to share or even understand the stresses and despair generated from such pressures are making students walking bundles of nervous wreck ready to break down at any moment. Add to these the rising fee, cutting of scholarships, pres-sures of funding one’s education (student loans), precarious futures (all part of the neo-liberal reorganisation of Universities)

and you will get the recipe for a nervous breakdown. one can only imagine the emotional condition of students belonging to various marginalised and under-privi-leged backgrounds facing discrimination at so many levels in our Universities.

Now, there will be people who would say that these are very mundane problems of life and one’s got to deal with them. So thought the girl in my class who could not cope with the pressure of writing so many assignments, missed a few, started keep-ing ill most of the time, gradually stopped attending classes, had a nervous break-down and left her education as the doc-tor deemed her ‘unfit’ for continuing. So thought a friend whose assignments were repeatedly given back to him because they were not within the prescribed word limits until he could not write any more, could not bear to go to classes out of shame, started failing exams, gave end-less repeats and became suicidal.

There will also be people who would say that if these conditions in the Universities are responsible for pushing people into depression then why do some people suf-fer from depression and others don’t. of course, depression is a very complex phe-nomenon and cannot be reduced to only a few causes. Its sources are multiple, layered, difficult to discern, but there are sources nonetheless located in our lives and its conditions. Succumbing to de-pression, or not, also depends on one’s coping mechanisms but they are also not created in a vacuum and are products and markers of the kind of support system one has, the kind of life one has led which very much depend on the socio-cultural and economic condition of one’s self and fam-ily.

It is high time that we stopped locating de-pression in personal failures or alternative-ly pathologising and seeing it as disease to be cured in a person’s psyche only. It is high time that we created space for even bringing out and discussing these emotions and traumas and understand-ing their linkages with conditions in higher education institutions (though of course, they are not confined to it). It is high time we saw Depression as a political story.

Suicides And Address The Real Problem?
