A curious character who keeps flittingin and out of Carmel history is MARYAUSTIN. Well, perhaps “flit” is not quitethe right verb for her activities, because sheis described as a “dumpy little woman” whowalked the beaches and let her long brownhair dangle to her shoulders. Instinctivelywe don’t like her much, but we admire herindependence and her success in competingwith the macho men fronted by GeorgeSterling and Jack London. In a time (1900-1915) when women were supposed to beseen and not heard, she was a worthy suc-cessor to Eve, Cleopatra, Queen Victoria,Carrie Chapman Catt, Florence Nightingaleand Carrie Nation. And possibly an inspira-tion to Gloria Steinem, Eleanor Rooseveltand Jane Fonda. She came to Carmel in1905, already the author of a successfulbook, The Land of Little Rain. In Carmel,she finished her first novel, Isidro, polish-ing its phrases in a tree house behind herhome, which she called a “wick-i-up.” Shebattled Sterling and London on even terms,hit home runs in the Abalone league, andwrote 35 verses for “The Abalone Song.”Late in 1907, after less than 2 intense yearsin Carmel, she became convinced that shewas terminally ill and moved to Italy to die.That didn’t come off. She recovered anddrifted back to Carmel through England andNew York, arriving in 1913, She was alwaysa storm center and departed finally in 1924to Santa Fe where she ended her days.

Carmel area: Suspect was stopped at Handley Drive andCrestview Circle for a traffic violation and discovered to be aminor in possession of an open container of alcohol. CHPresponded, evaluated suspect, and determined he had been dri-

running a stop sign. Driver fled on foot and was apprehendedafter being Tased. He was intoxicated, had multiple prior DUI’sand a $30,000 warrant for probation violation. His license wasalso suspended.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Man came to the station to report los-ing his wallet while walking in the business district. He provid-ed a brief description of the wallet and its contents.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance dispatchedto a residence on Carpenter for a male in his 50s withpain/swelling to the left knee after a knee replacement. Patienttransported to CHOMP.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance dispatchedto a residence on Santa Fe for a male in his 70s complaining ofgeneral weakness. Patient taken to CHOMP by AMR.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Ambulance dispatched to 17 MileDrive for a male who fell off a skateboard and hit his head.Prior to arrival, an off-duty firefighter rendered aid to themale, who was refusing all medical treatment. Firefighterfound a gun underneath patient while patient was gatheringbelongings. The firefighter took the gun and tossed it into iceplant, away from the patient. Upon arrival, ambulance crewwas notified of the gun, and law enforcement was sum-moned. The man got on his skateboard and headed north on17 Mile Drive to his car. at about 2300 hours when a subject struck a horse that was onthe roadway. The horse received grave injuries. The owner of thehorse was identified, and the parties were to exchange informa-tion. Case closed.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Someone spray-painted graffiti on theback of the scorer’s booth at Larson Field.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Woman on Franciscan Way stated shereceived a bill from AMR for a medical transport but was out ofthe country at the time of the provided service. Informationonly; party counseled.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A patron of a Dolores Street restaurantfell and injured her nose while she was leaving the establishmentafter dinner. She was transported to CHOMP for treatment.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A Carmel citizen, reported to be suici-dal, left her home on foot and headed toward the residential areasouth of Ocean. After an area check, CPD units were notified thesubject had gone to a neighbor’s home. CPD units responded anddetermined the subject to be a danger to herself. She was placedon a 72-hour hold.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance dispatchedto business at Ocean and San Carlos for a fire-alarm activation.Engine was canceled en route but proceeded to the scene to

make sure the property was secured. Upon arrival, it was deter-mined the alarm was accidentally activated by constructionworkers. The owner arrived with a key to access the alarm boxso it could be silenced and said he would try to arrange to havea master key put into a lock box.

Carmel area: Mother and juvenile daughter had an alterca-tion.

Carmel Valley: Elderly woman reported her son physicallyand mentally abused her and threatened to kill her while bran-dishing a firearm. She also reported being slapped and punchedand falsely imprisoned when her son prevented her from leavingby keeping her from getting into her truck. Car stop of suspectfound him in possession of a loaded and concealed gun. Suspectarrested and booked.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person stated thatshe lives on Lincoln Street and had just got-ten into her parked car in order to go towork. She saw a female with a shopping cartnear her vehicle. Person started her car andlet it idle for about 30 seconds. Person lookedin her mirrors and behind her car and sawthat the female was not around. Personbacked her car and heard a small sound. Shestopped the car and she got out. The femaleshe had previously seen was standing next toher car. The female then kicked the person’scar twice. She stated, “Your car hit me, so Ihit it.” The person asked why she was behindher car and said that she never saw her. Thefemale said, “I’m OK; we’re OK.” Thefemale then walked away. The resident want-ed information on file in case the femaletries to report about the incident.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Sometime duringmidyear 2008, jewelry went missing from ahouse in Carmel on Casanova Street. The per-son stated she believes her ex-caregiver may beresponsible.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person came into thestation to report finding a small white dog in

her area of Monte Verde Street. Dog was takeninto custody by the person and brought to thestation for safekeeping, pending owner notifi-cation. Dog was found to have a collar and tags,and a message was left for the owner. Atapproximately 1423 hours, the owner came intothe station to claim the dog. Kennel fees werepaid and the dog was released to its owner.
