Transcript of Section Policy Physics 8B

  • Discussion/Lab Section Policy Physics 8B, Fall 2015

    1. You are required to attend the section in the first two weeks of instruction, including those that meet before your first lecture. Remember to sign in on the attendance sheet. If you are planning to switch section and hence do not attend your officially enrolled section, you should still print your name and sign on the attendance sheet. If you cannot attend the section, you should inform your GSI or the head GSI. We may drop people who do not show up in the section. On the other hand, if you no longer intend to take 8B this semester, it is your OWN responsibility to drop the course yourself before early drop deadline (Friday 9/4), otherwise you have to complete the course.

    2. If you wish to switch sections, the only way is through telebears. We do not offer any other section switching options. The head GSI will not reply to any section-switching-request emails unless for very exceptional reasons. 3. We will start doing labs in the 6th week of class. The section will meet twice a week, no matter whether there is a scheduled lab or not. If there is no scheduled lab, both meetings will be

discussion sections. 4. You could audit another GSIs discussion section provided that you have that GSIs consent and the number of people in the room is no more than 25. 5. You are required to do the labs in your officially enrolled section, even if you attend another GSIs discussion regularly. If you have a one-time time conflict that prevents your from doing the lab in your officially enrolled section, you can make it up in other sections. But such kind of

makeup should not happen more than TWICE throughout the semester. You will NOT receive any lab credit starting from the third time. 6. Discussion section attendance is not mandatory (except for the first two weeks), though definitely strongly encouraged. 7. Lab section attendance is required. Your final grade will be lowered by one-third of a letter

grade (e.g., from A- to B+) for more than 1 unexcused missing lab. 8. Makeup lab policy: a. Email your GSI before your lab section if you know you cannot do the lab at the regular time unless you have a last-minute emergency. b. We only have lab sections on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If your regular lab section is on Thursday but you cant attend it, remember to do your makeup lab beforehand. If you wish to attend another GSIs lab section for a makeup lab, email that GSI

for permission before going to the section, and ask him/her to sign on your lab report when you finish it. c. Turn in your lab report to your GSI for grading and entering the score on bCourses. d. In general, makeup lab should be done the same week. If you don't do the lab the same week, we still have one setup for the lab the next week. But you would have to do it in the other section by yourself. If you have an unavoidable conflict such that you cannot do the lab, any requests to waive the lab must be approved by the professor. GSIs have no authority to excuse you from the lab. 9. If you are significantly late in the lab section, (more than 30 minutes), you will get a 50% point

deduction for that lab. 10. Each lab is graded out of 10. Labs weigh 10% of the total course grade.
