    Jamal whistled a happy tune as he walked home after buying two small packets of nasi

    lemakfrom Mak Minahs stall. As he walked past a big tree at the side of the road, he saw an

    old man sitting under it. He looked tired and hungry. Jamal felt sorry for the old man and

    decided to give him a packet of nasi lemak.

    Thank you, replied the old man gratefully. I havent eaten for three days. Can I have

    the other packet, too?

    Butbutthe other packet is for my mother, replied Jamal.

    Iknow. But Im really very hungry, pleaded the old man as he pulled something out

    from an old cloth bag. Please take these as payment for the food, he said as he placed a

    handful of pebbles in Jamals hand. Jamal looked curiously at the pebbles. When helooked up

    again, the old man had disappeared. Jamal was shocked. He quickly stuffed the pebbles intohis pocket and ran all the way home.

    Jamal told his mother what had happened. He then pulled out the pebbles to show them

    to his mother. What a surprised he had! The pebbles had turned into diamonds! Jamal and his

    mother were very happy. They knew that the old man had rewarded Jamal for his kindness.

    CHICKEN ALA INDIA(This dish can serve 5 people)Ingredients:

    1 kg chicken 5 cloves of garlic 2 big onions 1 cups of water Cinnamon

    Method:

    First, blend the ginger and garlic and use the mixture to marinade the chicken for about 20 minutes.Then, heat the oil in a wok and fry the cinnamon, star anise, cloves, curry leaves and onions. After afew seconds, pour the chicken marinade into the wok and fry the chicken until it is half cooked. Next,add in the water, curry powder and chilli powder. Cover the wok and cook over a slow fire until itthickens. Finally, add a pinch of salt to the dish and serve while hot.

    Shah Jahan, which means King of the World, became the fifth Mughal emperor of Indiain 1628. Before becoming emperor, Shah Jahan was known as Prince Kurram. He married a

    Muslim Persian princess, Arjumand Banu Begum in 1612 and gave her title Mumtaz Mahal

    means Beloved Ornament of the Palace.

    Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 after giving birth to their 14 th child in Burhanpur. The

    emperor was so grief-strickenthat all his hair and beard were said to have grown snow white

    in a few months.

    To show his undying love, Shah Jahan decided to build a white marble mausoleum in

    memory of his wife. He named it the Taj Mahal. Its construction began soon after Mumtazs

    death and was completed 22 years later. The Taj Mahal was designed by Ustad Isa, an Iranianarchitect. It took twenty thousand people to build. The material for the construction of the Taj

    Mahal was brought in from all over India and Central Asia and as many as one thousand

    elephants were used to transport it to the construction site in Agra, India. Shah Jahan died in

    1666.

    The Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world, still stands tall and proud today. It is the

    ultimate monument of love. This beautiful building which is well- known throughout the world is

    perhaps Indias most popular tourist attraction.

    The lion dance is usually performed only by people who know martial arts like kungfu. The dancers

    17 November 2013

    9.30 a.m. :Was at Kinabalu National Park headquarters to register for the track to Laban Rata

    halfway up to Lows Peak (summit). Took a short minibus ride with guide to the climb;s

    official start, the Timpohon Gate.

    10.15 a.m. : Tracked downhill through cooling rainforest. Saw many ferns and other greens during

    climb up. Still energetic. Stopped at a rest hut to refill free drinking water from mountain

    streams.

    12.00 p.m. : Reached Layang- Layang. Had lunch. Was beginning to get tired! Climb more difficult now.

    Ferns replaced bt stunted trees. Trek very steep and rocky. Nearly slipped on some rocks.

    Thank God nothing happened!

    1.30 p.m. :climb now at 2500 metres. Caught sight of the Kinabalu mountain top. Very excited!

    Spoilt by a severe headache! Took Panadol.

    2.30 p.m. : Climb now at 3000 metres. Saw bare trees and lots of moss. Air quite thin. Found

    difficulty in breathing.3.10 p.m. : Finally at Laban Rata. Exhausted and slept right away. Needed a good rest before

    continuing to Lows Peak tomorrow.
