• The microscope was invented in the late 1500s by Dutch spectacle-maker Zacharias Janssen.
HISTORY
• It magnified objects 3 to 9 times its size.

• The first person to observe single-celled organisms under a microscope was Anton van Leeuwenhoek
(Lay-vun-hook).
• His was a simple light microscope because it contained one lens and used natural light to view
objects.

• Robert Hooke was an English scientist who lived at the same time as van Leeuwenhoek. He named “cells” and described them as the basic unit of life.
• Hooke used a compound light microscope to study cork, the dead cells of oak bark.

COMPOUND LIGHT MICROSCOPE
Compound light microscopes use light to view and a series of lenses to magnify objects in steps.

Compound Light Microscope
• Compound- because it uses more than one lens
• Light- because it uses light to transmit the image to your eye
• Microscope- “micro” means small
“scope” means view

Compound Light Microscope
• Modern compound light microscopes can magnify an object up to 2000Xs its size.

• The electron microscope was first invented in the 1940s.
• This microscope uses a beam of
electrons to illuminate and then create an
image that magnifies
structures up to 500,000 times
their actual size.
