Clause”
Overruled the Supreme Court’s decision in Dred Scott vs. Standford.
Citizens are “all persons born or naturalized in the United States.”
States cannot deprive citizens of life, liberty, or happiness without “due process of law.”
All citizens are to have “equal protection under the laws.”
14th Amendment (1868)
Republican state lawmakers from various states try to pass laws to combat illegal immigration.
Laws seek to create a definition of state citizenship which excludes children born to two illegal immigrants.
An interstate compact which issues distinctive birth certificate which shows legal immigration status
Legislators expect their laws to be challenged and found unconstitutional, but they want their message heard.
