DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Store masonry units on elevated platforms hi a dry location. If units are not stored hi an enclosed

location, cover tops and sides of stacks with waterproof sheeting, securely tied. If nnits become wet, donot install until they are dry.

Store cementitious materials on elevated platforms, under cover, and in a dry location. Do not nsecementitions materials that have become damp.

Store aggregates where grading and other required characteristics can be maintained and contaminationavoided.

Deliver preblended, dry mortar mix in moisture-resistant containers designed for nse with dispensingsilos. Store preblended, dry mortar mLx in delivery containers on elevated platforms, nnder cover, and ina dry location or hi covered weatherproofdispensing silos.

Store masonry accessories, including metal items, to prevent corrosion and accnmnlation ofdirt and oil.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

Protection of Masonry: During construction, cover tops of walls, projections, and sills with waterproofsheeting at end of each day's work. Cover partially completed masonry when construction is not inprogress.

1. Extend cover a minimom of 24 inches down both sides ofwalls and hold cover securely in place.2. Where ooe wythe of moltiwythe masonry walls is cmnpleted in advance of otber •vythes, secure

cover a minimum of24 inches down face next to unconstructed wythe and hold cover in place.

Do not apply uniform floor or roof loads for at least 12 hours and concentrated loads for at least three

days after building masonry walls or columns.

Stain Prevention: Prevent grout, mortar, and soil from staining the face of masonry to be left exposed orpainted. Immediately remove grout, mortar, and soil that come in contact with soch masmtry.

1. Protect base ofwalls from rain-splashed mud and from mortar splatter by spreading coverings ongronnd and over wall surface.

2. Protect sills, ledges, and projections from mortar droppings.3. Protect surfaces of window and door flames, as well as similar products with painted and integral

finishes, from mortar droppings.

4. Turn scaflbld boards near tbe wall on edge at the end of each day to prevent rain from splashingmortar and dirt onto completed masoory.

Cold-Weather Requirements: Do not use flozen materials or materials mixed or coated with ice or frost.

Do not build on frozen substrates. Remove and replace onit masonry damaged by frost or by freezingconditions. Comply with cold-weather construction requirements contained inACI 530.1/ASCE 6/TMS 602.

Cold-Weatber Cleaning: Use liquid cleaning methods ooly wben air temperata•re is 40 deg F andhigher and will remain so outil maso•n2¢ has dried, bot uot less than seven days after completingcleaning.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

A.

MASONRY UNITS, GENERAL

Defective Units: Referenced masonry unit standards may allow a certain percentage of units to contuinchips, cracks, or other defects exceeding limits stated in the standard. Do not use units where suchdefects will be exposed in the completed Work.

Fire-Resistance Ratings: Where indicated, provide units that comply with requirements for fu'e-resistance

ratings indicated as determined by testing according to ASTM E 119, by equivalent masonry thickness, orby other means, as acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS

Regional Materials: CMUs shall be manufactured within 500 miles of Project site fi'om aggregates andcement flint have been extracted, harvested, or recovered, as well as manufactured, witbin 500 miles of

Project site.

Shapes: Provide shapes indicated and as follows, with exposed surfaces matching exposed faces ofadjacent onits unless otherwise indicated.

Provide special shapes for lintels, corners, jambs, sashes, movement joints, headers, bonding, andother special conditions.Provide sqaare-edgedunits for ontside coruers uniess otberwise indicated.

C. CMUs: ASTM C 90.

Unit Compressive Strengtb: Provide onits with minimum average net-area compressive strengthof2150 psi

MASONRY LINTELS

Generul: Provide one of the following:

Masonry Lintels: Prefabricated or bnilt-in-place masonry lintels made fi'om bond beam CMUs withreinforcing bars placed as indicated and filled with coarse grout. Care precast lintels before handling andinstalling. Temporarily support built-in-place lintels until cured.

2.4 BRICK

A. Regional Materials: Brick shall be manufactured within 500 miles of Project site fi'om materials thatbave been extracted, harvested, or recovered, as well as mamffactured, within 500 miles of Project site.

2. Provide special shapes for applications where stretcher nnits canuot accommodate specialconditions, including llmse at corners, movement joints, bond beams, sashes, and lintels.

3. Provide special shapes for applications reqoiring brick ofsize, form, color, and texture on exposedsurfaces that cannot be prodaced by sawing.

4. Provide special shapes for applications where shapes produced by sawing would resnlt in sawedsurfaces being exposed to view.

C. Face Brick: Facing brick complying with ASTM C 216.

Unit Compressive Strength: Provide units with miniraum average net-area compressive strengthof 3350 psi .

Initial Rate of Absorption: Less than 30 g/30 sq. in. per minute wben tested per ASTM C 67.Efflorescence: Provide brick that has been tested according to ASTM C 67 and is rated "noteffloresced."

Sarface Coating: Brick with colors or textures produced by application ofcoatings shall withstand50 cycles of freezing and tliawing per ASTM C 67 with no observable difference in the appliedfinish wben viewed from 10 feet.

2.5 MORTAR AND GROUT MATERIALS

A. Portland Cement: ASTM C 150, Type l or I1, except Type Ill may be used for cold-weather construction.Provide natural color or white cement as reqoired to produce nmrtar color indicated.

B. Hydrated Lime: ASTM C 207, Type S.

C. Portland Cement-Lhne Mix: Packaged blend of portlaud cement and hydrated lime containing no otheringredients.

D. Masonry Cement: ASTM C 91.

E. Mortar Cement: ASTM C 1329.

F. Mortar Pigments: Nataral and synthetic iron oxides and chromium oxides, componnded for use in nmrtarmixes and complying with ASTM C 979. Use only pigments with a record ofsatisfactory performance inmasom2¢ mortar.

G. Colored Cement Prodnct: Packaged blend made from portland cement and hydrated lhne and mortarpigments, all complying with specified requirements, and containing no other ingredients.

For mortar that is exposed to view, use wasbed aggregate consisting of natural sand or crashedstone.

For joints less than 1/4 inch thick, use aggregate graded with 100 percent passing tbe No. 16 sieve.White-Mortar Aggregates: Natural white sand or crashed white stone.Colored-Mortar Aggregates: Natural saud or crushed stone of color necessary to produce requiredmm'tar color.

Aggregate for Grout: ASTM C 404.

Epoxy Pointing Mortar: ASTM C 395, epoxy-resin-based material formulated for use as pointing •nortarfor structural-clay tile facing nnits (and approved for such use by manufacturer of units); in colorindicated or, if not otherwise indicated, as selected by Architect fi'om manufacturer's colors.

Cold-Weather Admixture: Nonchloride, noncorrosive, accelerating admixture complying with

ASTM C 494/C 494M, Type C, and recommended by manufacturer for use in masonry umrlar ofcomposition indicated.

3.1 EXAMINATION

Examine conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerancesand other conditions affecting performance of the Work.
