SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD
A. SPEAK TO YOUR CHILD ABOUT HIS/HER STRENGTHS, INTEREST, APTITUDE
Where does he/she see himself/herself after secondary school – JC/Poly/ITE? What subjects is he/she good at?
Pure vs Combined Science
o Depth of coverage
o Pure Science: NOT requirement for Poly or for JC non-Science courses
Additional Maths (A Maths)
o Aims (MOE) - To provide a strong foundation in algebraic manipulation and mathematical
reasoning & to prepare students for A-Level H2 and H3 Mathematics
o A Maths: NOT requirement for Poly or for JC non-Science courses
Coursework Subjects
o More practical-oriented approach; 60 -70 % of marks for coursework
8-subject Combination
• All-round competency, stamina, outside curriculum time
B. DO TARGET SETTING WITH YOUR CHILD Goals give your focus – “you can’t hit if you do not know what you are aiming
for” Goals allow you to measure progress – benchmark to compare Goals give you motivation – an end point to aim for and get excited about
C. ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO PERSEVERE No such thing as just “Try” Upper secondary is a 2/3 year curriculum
D. IN SCHOOL, AS IS IN LIFE, WE DON’T ALWAYS GET WHAT WEWANT We can learn to love what we get, make the best of opportunities presented to us Learning doesn’t stop
How is final subject combination decided?
• Allocation is based solely on Performance NOT potential
Especially so in instances where there are constraints (eg. resource availability)
• Must meet streaming criteria
• Overall merit relative to cohort (overall performance + performance in specific subject)
• Availability of places for each combination
How is the final allocation decided?
• CCA & School-based Enrichment Activities are an IMPORTANT & INTEGRALaspect of secondary school life
• Learn new skills, develop competencies and pursue and deepen interest
• Build character – discipline, commitment & time management
• Opportunity to make & meet new friends
• Important for Direct School Admission (DSA) / Early Admission Exercise (EAE)
