P 2 M 15—M 22, 2020

This week as we continue our journey through Lent, we take a break from the solemnness of the season to celebrate with great joy the Feast of St. Joseph (on Thursday)- the patron of families, a happy death, and our diocese. If you have never tak-en part in this beautiful tradition I highly encourage you to consider doing so. If you have celebrated St. Joseph Day with us before I have no doubt you will want to join again as it is truly a beautiful part of our faith and a great way to remember in prayer our fam-ilies members living and deceased. As a child I could never imagine a moment when I was not surrounded by family. Family in some sense was my whole world. The older we get the more time and life take us to different places. The family I once saw every day and at every meal are spread between two states and four different towns. As the old saying goes – time waits for no man. As life goes on the more I realize not only how cher-ished those moments from the past where, but how cherished the family I still have are to me. On the feast of St. Joseph I remember them all in my prayer. I come to Church and pray for all my family living – and for their families, and I re-member those who have gone before me marked with faith. I pray for them and that they may be with God forever, and that they may save a place for me at His eternal heavenly banquet. Three years ago when we began this beautiful tradition of celebrating St. Joseph’s day in our par-ish, we had no idea how things would go. In the end what happened was that we began something beauti-ful: a yearly tradition of not only honoring St. Jo-seph, but also remembering our families. Our celebration of St. Joseph’s day begins with the building of the St. Joseph Altar on the sanc-tuary steps at Holy Trinity and ends with a beautiful Mass celebrated at 6:15pm. The Mass is followed by a reception in the parish hall immediately after and a gathering of our Church family on this great occa-sion. Throughout the day on Thursday, March 19th people are invited to come and pray at Holy Trinity. In a special way we will be encouraged to pray for our families and our diocese, and to bring pictures of deceased loved ones to be honored. Since the feast of St. Joseph is a Solemnity in the Church we are free to break our Lenten fasting in order to honor the fos-ter father of Jesus, and our patron. As I love to say, it is our obligation to celebrate that day and to step away from Lent and into the glorious witness and light of St. Joseph.

On another note, I wanted to take this moment to speak to the parish community and to share with you the steps we are taking to help best ensure the safety, health, and well being of our parish family. First and foremost we are asking all parishion-ers to join us in using the best practices of health and hygiene. These practices include the following: Regular and vigorous Handwashing Avoid shaking hands/touching public surfaces Avoid touching one’s face and most importantly... Stay home from Mass if you are sick or caring for someone who is sick

As parish we regularly disinfect public surfac-es in our churches between services, insist on regular handwashing for all Eucharistic ministers, as well as altar servers and lectors, provide hand sanitizer to all Eucharistic ministers to be used before and after the distribution of Holy Communion. As you have no-ticed at Mass we have also dispensed from offering the Chalice, as well as the sign of peace. At this point none of us know exactly how and where things will proceed with the Corona Virus. The temptation is to respond either with indifference or panic- neither of these will help in any way. As a parish we are being very pragmatic and taking all the necessary steps to best proceed as things unfold. We are watching closely the directives from the CDC and the State of New Hampshire in how best to respond to the current outbreak. We work hard to maintain an active social media and internet presence which means that we can quickly disseminate information as needed and keep you up to date throughout the week and not simply at Masses. I would encourage to become familiar with our parish website www.stignatius-stmary.org and to follow us on facebook. We regularly use both of these platforms to keep parishioners informed on the daily happenings in the parish. Please also know that you can still support your parish through online giving. Online giving al-lows you to give your weekly offertory from your checking account or charged to your credit card. It’s a great way to support the parish each week, especially when you are away from town for the weekend or under the weather. Finally, be assured the parish is making con-tingency plans for how best to proceed with this emerging health challenge. These is no need for fren-zied panic but it is a good time for us to be smart, to use common sense and to be prepared. As I believe in full transparency and common sense- I will be keeping you up to date each week here in the bulletin, from the pulpit, and online. -Fr. Andrew

We – the Knights

The Knight of Columbus are known as the right arm of the Catholic Church. We are the L/Cpl. Paul R. LeHoullier Council, named for the only Somersworth native killed in combat during the Vietnam War. Weserve both St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish and St. Mary Parish. Usually working quietly, behind the scenes, weare involved in many aspects of Parish life. Some of our members serve on each Parish Council, are Eucharis-tic ministers, ushers. choir members, or are involved in the annual Christmas Fair, Yard Sale, monthly Parishbreakfast or the weekly bingo.

Some of our projects and activities accomplished during the past year include using proceeds from our Cash Calendar raffle, which awards winners drawn weekly throughout the year some $3000 in prizes, our Christmas wreath sales, and our Keep Christ in Christmas program, among others, to provide one of our Di-ocesan seminarians with a $500 yearly donation to help cover expenses such as computer and printing sup-plies, paper, postage, and an occasional treat of a meal out or a quick cup of coffee while on the run.

We have raised money through several drives, mostly based at the local Market Basket, to provide a $1500 donation to the Maplewood School Special Olympic All-Stars to help fund their expenses while com-peting in regional, state and national events, and through a Supermarket Sweep raffle offering $1000 in shop-ping cards as prizes, to donate $500 yearly each to the Community Food Pantry, the Table of Plenty Soup Kitchen, the Seeds of Faith Food Pantry and the Somersworth Share Fund.

We have presented St. Ignatius Parish with a much needed new set of Chalice Veils, and were joined by the Catholic War Veterans in providing a monthly pancake breakfast for the Religious Formation program families. We sponsored a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for the Sr. Judith Scholarship, which brought aware-ness to the program, generating an additional donation of $5000 over the $1017 we raised.

We sponsored one of our own members, a masonry craftsman, for the necessary repairs to the outside stairs at Holy Trinity Church and the bell tower at St. Martin Church, saving the Parish a substantial expense for either project.

If you have never been asked to join the Knights, or simply did not have time to attend the degree cer-emonies to achieve full Knighthood, we now offer a condensed ceremonial which includes the exemplifica-tion of Charity, Unity and Fraternity of our Order. Families and friends are invited and encouraged to attend this short, half-hour ceremony in which candidates achieve full Third Degree member status. Some benefits our order offers are affordable insurance, annuities, and estate planning.

We only ask our members to spend a couple of hours in a program or event that they find of interest during the year, and attend a monthly meeting when possible. We meet on the third Sunday of each month at Holy Trinity Church at 7 PM.

If you are interested in joining our vibrant Council and helping your Parish as well, there will be a re-gional degree on Saturday, March 21 at 9:00 AM at the Knights of Columbus hall in Rochester.

To register or obtain more information, please contact Mike LaMontagne at 207-752-1000, Tony Welch at 603-692-5691, Ed McNally at 603-692-2130, or Paul Dubois at 603-953-6066.
