Global South: The New Catholic Center of Gravity
New Catholic population numbers released for World Mission Day confirm that the southern hemisphere has become the new demographic center of gravity of the Church. Today more than two-thirds of all Catho-lics live outside the West and their numbers are grow-ing by the day.
The missionary news agency Fides releases a statisti-cal overview of the world’s Catholic population which shows there are 1.3 billion Catholics around the globe, representing 18 percent of the global population. Ac-cording to the Vatican, the following are now the larg-est Catholic countries in the world. Their combined totals account for more than half of all Catholics:
Brazil (172.2 million); Mexico (110.9); Philippines (83.6); United States (72.3); Italy (58.0); France (48.3); Colombia (45.3); Spain (43.3); Democratic Republic of Congo (43.2); Argentina (40.8)
Comparing that list to the same totals from 2000, there are two notable shifts: the Philippines has overtaken the United States as the world’s third largest Catholic country, and Poland has disappeared from the top ten altogether in favor of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa.
In 1900 there were roughly 266 million Catholics in the world, of whom over 200 million were in Europe and North America. The other 66 million were scat-tered across the rest of the planet and 53 million of these were in Latin America. The cultural and ethnic profile of the Church in 1900 was pretty much the same as it was in the 16th century. By way of contrast, in 2000 there were 1.1 billion Catholics in the world, of whom only 350 million were Europeans and North American. A staggering 720 million lived in Latin America (400 million), Africa and Asia. At that time slightly more than two-thirds of the Catholics lived in the West. Now more than two-thirds live outside the West, and that share is growing rapidly.
The case of Africa is most striking. Over the course of the 20th century, the Catholic population of sub-
Saharan Africa went from 1.9 million to more than 130 million (6,708 percent). Asia too saw impressive growth starting with 1.2 percent of the Asian popula-tion and ending with 3 percent, meaning that the Church more than doubled. India’s Catholic popula-tion grew from under two million to over 17 million, and it will be at least 26 million by mid-century. From 1985 to 2005, the percentage of Catholics in South Korea more than doubled, standing today at just over 11 percent or by 5 million people. In 2000, there were more Catholic baptisms in the Philippines alone than in France, Spain, Italy, and Poland combined. Project-ing forward to year 2025, only one Catholic in five will be a non-Hispanic Caucasian, which observers have described as the most rapid, and most sweeping, demographic transformation of Roman Catholicism in its 2,000-year history.
It’s an arresting exercise to look down the line to the year 2050, drawing on population projections from the United Nations Population Division, and presuming that the Catholic percentage in each nation will remain more or less the same. This may over-estimate the Catholic population in Latin America, where Catholi-cism is losing members to both Pentecostalism and to religious indifference, and in Europe, where seculari-zation continues to eat away at Catholic faith and practice. But it almost certainly under-estimates the African totals, where growth in Catholicism is outpac-ing overall population growth. Nevertheless, based on this formula, here is the projected list of the largest Catholic nations in 2050: Brazil (215 million); Mexi-co (132 million); The Philippines (105 million); Unit-ed States (99 million); Democratic Republic of Congo (97 million); Uganda (56 million); France (49 mil-lion); Italy (49 million); Nigeria (47 million); Argenti-na (46.1 million). By that stage, seven of the ten larg-est Catholic nations in the world will be in the global south. Given that growth, the statistical expert, Philip Jenkins, has said that seen from a global perspective, “any suggestion of the Catholic Church ‘dying’ or even stagnating is so wildly inaccurate as to be comical.”

The Bishops of the United States
The Bishops are asking the Catholic community to call their Congressional representatives next Monday, February 26th and register their support for bipartisan legislation to protect the young women and men who will soon lose their legal status and their legal right to work in our nation. This action is so crucial for literally tens of thousands of our brothers and sisters in San Diego and Imperial counties. For more info see flier on the church bulletin board.

AROUND TOWN
Daily Prayer for Our Priests O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
