Fr. Ma ’s Message A voice of one crying out in the desert: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John the Bap st appeared in the desert proclaiming a bap‐

sm of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. A voice of one can be easily drowned out. The world is noisy and it is easy to become distracted. Our faith and this season of Ad‐vent invite us to slow down, taking and making the me to listen. Listen for this voice crying in the wilderness; a voice which proclaims that love and forgiveness can be ours. These are the priceless, precious gi s that Jesus constantly offers to us. God wants to comfort us, to console us. “Console my peo-ple, console them…speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her that her  me of service is ended, that her sin is atoned for…” When Jesus offers us forgiveness, he is offer‐ing us a safe and healthy escape route from a nega ve past. He offers us freedom from living with the sins from our past. No ma er what we might have done, our Lord can free us. What greater consola on could we wish for? God’s forgiveness breaks all chains which keep us anchored in our past deeds. When we accept that life‐giving forgiveness we are immediately released from the nega ve past which our ac ons or inac on may have created. We no longer have to go through life looking over our shoulder, filled with regrets for the things we have done, or filled with self‐accusa on for the things we have failed to do. Please join me in welcoming Sister Ana Maria Pineda, a Sis‐ter of Mercy. Sister Ana Maria will be with us at the 10:00 a.m. Mass and will reflect with us on Our Lady of Guadalupe and her coming feast day, December 12. This Thursday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. we will celebrate a beau ful Ad‐vent Service of Lessons and Carols. Through Scripture, Song and prayer, we will enter more deeply into the mys‐tery of God’s love and mercy. Next week, Wednesday, De‐cember 20, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia‐

on. God’s forgiveness gives us back our present and good life and draws us into a future filled with possibili es for love and goodness. That is the Good News, which Jesus came to proclaim. The coming feast of Christmas is a con‐crete promise that everything can be different. May the blessings you find in these Advent days be the blessings that you most need. Love and All Good, Fr. Ma

Simbang Gabi

You may have heard of Posadas, why not try Simbang Gabi?

Every country in the world names the days before Christ‐

mas somewhat differently: Puerto Rico‐ Parrandas/

Aguinaldo, Mexico/Central America – Posadas, Italy – Nove‐

na Italiana di Bambino Gesu, Philippines – Simbang Gabi,

etc.). Each year on the nine days before Christmas, Catholic

Churches in the Philippines come alive with tolling of the

bells at four in the morning to herald Simbang Gabi (“Night

Masses”). Filipinos tradi onally celebrate Simbang Gabi by

having Mass each day in the early morning, which includes

catechesis and food. The devo on is also referred “misa de

gallo” or “mass of the rooster” because the original cele‐

bra on took place at dawn before the start of the farming

day and at the end of a long night of fishing. The missionar‐

ies who began Simbang Gabi used it as a way to catechize

and evangelize, and to pass on Filipino tradi ons. Today,

Simbang Gabi is usually celebrated in the evening, accom‐

moda ng the modern work schedule, though the elements

of prayer, catechesis, food and music are s ll at the heart

of the celebra on. As a con nua on of this tradi on in the

US, parishes throughout the Archdiocese of San Francisco

are hos ng celebra ons of Simbang Gabi, and this year,

MHR would like to share this opportunity with the parish.

MHR will celebrate Simbang Gabi on Sunday, December

17, 2017 at the 6:30 PM Mass. A simple recep on will fol‐

low Mass. For more informa on, or to volunteer to help

that evening, please contact the parish office at

415‐863‐6259.
