How long you have been designing in SL?

I have been designing in SL since I joined back in July 2004 (makes me feel really old now!) back when I was new to image editing. After playing around with making outfits for The Sims and making a website to share my creations, I wanted to try something new. So, I joined Second Life, got my 512m2 plot of land in Puea and opened my first store - Shrewsbury Fashions. The store was very newbie-esque and my designs were all photosourced. I provided clothes and accessories for men and later got invited to vend in Galleria City & Galleria Skymall.

After a while, I renamed the store to ‘The Trend’ and later just ‘TREND’. Eventually I moved away from photosourced clothes and specialised in guys sunglasses and accessories and opened an outlet in Midnight City as well as relocating my main store to a rented larger plot on a private island.

After a while, RL took over and I had to break from SL for a while so I shut up shop and took a break. I later came back on a new account and started a new guys store called ‘Vinson’ where i started to work on hand drawn designs. I was invited to work with the Armidi girls, but that fell through and they went off to do their own thing. After this, I took a break from SL again to work on my RL again.

About 2 years ago, I returned to SL, determined to get going at designing again and started a new store, ‘Suri’. I decided I would try out designing for women for a change. I later renamed the store to ‘FORCE’ and eventually settled with the name ‘Ty Zvezda’ June 2008, scrapping many old designs and working on new, more interesting things. Ty Zvezda means ‘You’re a Star’ in russian.

Are you creations photosourced or hand draw?

All my designs are all hand drawn and my sculpties are all hand made by myself. I’m still teaching myself Blender (although verrry slowly) and love attaching little sculpty prim details onto normal outfits to make them more interesting.

What is your inspiration for the outfits created?

First I think of the colours. I find that the original colour I start

fresh faces | Ty Zvezda

Alan Edison is the creative mind behind Ty Zvezda - which means You’re a Star, in Russian. Alan’s creations have a different appeal to them, as they aim for a real life look. The store features a good selection of designs for women. In most pieces you can find sculpties, which, with some minor editing fit perfectly. Alan has been adding more layering options to the more recent creations, which is greatly appreciated by the fashionistas looking for as many options as possible. He has also added glitch pants for the sculpted dresses; this is helpful to those of us with active animation overrides. As perfect as they look while you are holding very still, a lot of movement doesn’t seem to be advantageous to the animations.

working on a project with affects how it turns out. The Totah Body Wraps original was in the very bright orange and I think this vibrant colour influenced me to create an eclectic style of outfit. Whereas, the Ella gowns were in subtle pastels and turned out to be a classy, statuesque design. To be honest, the Ella gown originated from a sculpty I and a very good friend, Jennifer Graves were fooling around with. Yes, it was a giant sheet over our shoulders to look like a ghost. I liked the curves on it and repositioned it over my hips and suddenly I got the idea for the Ella gown. My ideas seem to come very randomly, and like most people, I go through patches where all my ideas have dried up and have to take a break for a week or so.

How do you describe your store?

I’d like to think of my store as somewhere calming and refreshing to go to, to shop and also hang out. I have tried to keep an open layout for ease of movement and I love the many shades of brown, ivory, whites and creams. My items are set into the walls and lighting around them. I’m trying to go for the real life look I guess. My clothes I would describe as different, not Lady Gaga different, but more like refreshing in comparison to a plain tank top or design tee. I love making dresses because I can see more variation in the styles that can be created than what there may be with trousers/jeans.

Any important information you want to share

I’d like to say a big thank you to all my regular customers and those who have just dropped a compliment in an IM. For me, it is making people happy that gives me the drive to make more items. I’m not out to put high prices on my items and I’m not out to dominate the market. I think it’s very healthy to provide customers with as much choice and variation as possible. If anything, I would recommend that you support small stores in SL to provide competition with the larger stores. After all, it would be a bit dull if everyone wore the same outfit from the same store!

Dear Brig,

I need your help.

I was recently fired from my job. My employer cited ‘failure to adhere to company dress code policies’ as the reason for my termination, though she was rather flippant when I confronted her and asked her to explain exactly what she meant by that. Luckily, relations with my ex-coworkers are still intact, as are my sleuthing skills. Reports and evidence gathered from my former workplace suggest that the reason I was let go was because my wardrobe was (and I quote), too “bohemian,” “bedraggled,” “disordered,” and “generally a medley of beatnik trash.”

This, as you can imagine, has hurt me deeply.

I’ve never really adhered to a defined ‘style.’ In fact, I despise all forms of social conformism. I consider myself a free-spirited, imaginative thinker whose time is best devoted to creative endeavors-- not adorning my body with the latest and most trendy labels. I spit (literally) on such empty materailism, causing my removal from public places with what others might deem an alarming frequency.

If I don’t have a job, though, I can’t pay rent or afford groceries. While I wish I was above even these base niceties, I do have a ravenous love for TV dinners and lavish bed accessories. Given that I refuse to change my wardrobe, what kind of occupation do you think best fits my lifestyle and won’t prompt ejection from another workplace?

Dear Malingerer Maverick,

I’ve got an easy answer for you-- do what the rest of the

unemployed world is doing. Go back to school.

Life as a student suits your lifestyle astonishingly well. Students don’t have any actual real-world responsibilities. Sure, they might occasionally think ahead to their mounting student loan and credit card debt, but who cares? Didn’t Obama just say something about pardoning student loan debt after twenty years? Or was that pardoning Tiger Woods for his twenty mistresses? Whatever.

Your ‘medley of beatnik trash’ is actually standard uniform on most college campuses. Burn your corporate-poisoned suits and smart heels and bring out that pair of sweats (complete with phrases like “Love” and “Peace” plastered on the booty) to pair with your new Ugg boots and oppositely-colored cardigan. Toss the vintage skirt you stole from your mother’s memory box on top of the whole ensemble and, voila! You’re ready to go lead the pack for that debate you have in ethics class this afternoon. Your colorful behavior will be well-suited to the hundreds of student groups vying for your attention on campus and may even afford you the opportunity for any number of public demonstrations, too.

Even if rejoining the ranks of the creative collegiate crowd doesn’t help you get any closer to single-handedly achieving world peace, you might make a few grand more when you re-join the work world with another degree under your belt. If that’s not enough to pay for your Lean Cuisine and 800 thread-count bed linens, just keep re-enrolling for more degrees; you can continue to prolong contact with reality (it sucks anyway, right?), congratulate yourself for being so ferociously clever, and tell everyone

about the millions you’re going to be making someday. Trust me, it will make you wildly popular among your colleagues and friends-- and at the vintage apparel shop next to the campus location of Planned Parenthood.

Dear Brig,

I just achieved the unthinkable. I deleted everything in my inventory other than my skins, shapes, hair, eyes, and AO’s. I wanted a fresh start for my second life and boy, did I get one.

I want my avatar’s new style to be strictly Boho-chic. I’ve just jumped on that bandwagon myself in RL and I’d like to reflect that in my virtual identity. Before I teleport around snatching up trash that I’ll just end up deleting again, I want some advice about where I might go to get pieces appropriate for my new urbanity. Do you have thoughts on what stores can adorn me to become the Boho-Chic Goddess I feel budding inside myself?

Dear Burgeoning Beauty,

First of all, if you actually feel something ‘budding inside’ yourself, I’d advise a trip to the doctor or the Planned Parenthood near the vintage apparel shop the last reader frequents.

All joking aside, I think I can recommend some in-world stores that can offer a strong foundation for your new look.

To begin, head over to Tres Blah. I love Julliette Westerburg’s work because it really embodies the free-spirited uniqueness that is often associated with Boho-Chic. It’s really original, too-- the pieces I pick up at Julliette’s store are unlike anything else I collect around the grid. You can count on Tres Blah for pretty floral-patterned pieces, lots of lavishly layered tops, and some really cute handbags to pair with your ensembles.

Second I’d pop into Milk Motion. Marie Lauridsen can hook you up with plush cardigans, attention-grabbing blazers, and truly unmatched accessories like pins, necklaces, and feathered hair

Postcards< continued from page 22

Page 23: Second Style Issue # 33

embellishments-- all in styles that are truly Boho-Chic. Even though Marie’s pieces aren’t all made to go together, they somehow still do.

Finally (though not lastly-- these recommendations are only meant to get you started!), take a peek at MNK*SHOP. You can turn to this store for pieces that’ll complete any look-- funky embroidered sweaters to toss on if your avatar gets cold (hey, it happens), a variety of wispy skirts and dresses, and even some fun poses so you’ll be ready for the paparazzi that will undoubtedly flock to you when you hit the virtual streets with your new ‘do.

Just for fun, I’ve put together some Boho-Chic-ish looks inspired by things I’ve snatched from these shops. I’ll look forward to seeing what you put together too. After all, the best thing about Boho-chic is how unique it is, right?

THE LOOK | BOHO-CHICby Rylan Carling…the unconventional, free-thinking, spirited girl who is sexy and delightful. The look usually includes loose flow-ing fashions, accessories made of earthen materials, and hairstyles that reflect an easy-going lifestyle. Beads strung around necklines and wrists, and woven into purses and shoes, add that touch of nature. And, who better to show off some jewelry with, than Zaara’s impeccably detailed necklace and bracelets? Maitreya’s Salience shoeline fits in perfectly with the feathers that adorn the leather straps, not to mention the beyond easy skin-color matching sys-tem. The BareRose crescent yellow purse is an excellent contrast to the vibrant color of the Doppelganger, Messina dress that couldn’t seem any more comfortable. Tricky Boucher’s new Alyson line has a stunning freckled look, with clean, fresh make-up options. She truly is beautiful. Tied together here, with Maitreya’s long Apple II hair, the look is perfect for a fancy free day of getting into whatever trouble you want!

Julliette WesterburgStyle Icon

If your mind works the same way mine does, then your first associations with this style are probably related to the colorful collections of bold, seemingly mismatched colors and patterns that characterized many of our parents’ (or even our own) apparel choices during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Maybe, though, you associate it with more recent trends in fashion associated with Sienna Miller and the Olsen twins who (for a while anyway) caught our attention with their floaty skirts, embroidered tunics, Ugg boots, and hobo bags-- all sported simultaneously.

Nailing down a particular definition of Boho-chic is, I think, defying the style itself-- it’s too free, creative, and inventive to fit inside a neat little box. Those in my RL and SL who are bold enough to sport (let alone legitimately pull off) the Boho-chic look are unconventional, artistic free-thinkers. They’re the most fashionable friends I have and, ironically, they don’t actually give a hoot about fashion. Go figure, right?

That said, I have met a few individuals who embody my understanding of Boho-chic and are very much in tune with the fashion world. Julliette Westerburg is one of them.

Julliette’s creations have become staples in my wardrobe, and not for the same reasons most of my other pieces have earned that coveted status. I don’t turn to my Tres Blah items to serve as the foundation for my ensembles-- I turn to them for the spice, variety, and edginess they lend. Whether it’s a boldly colored clutch or purse, a dainty tank top, or a sophisticated, fabulously detailed skin, Julliette’s pieces help me look (and even feel) creative, free, and daring. Though she’s become a household name, Julliette’s style doesn’t tend to bend to in-world trends. Instead, she continues to forge her own path, presenting us with pieces we’d never have imagined ourselves sporting, but now can’t imagine living our second lives without.

I snatched a few moments with Julliette to learn more about what makes her brain tick and she was kind enough to tell me about what she turns to for creative inspiration, what surprises her most about her life as a style icon, and which of her own pieces she can’t live without.

Can you share the story behind your store’s name?

Sadly, there isn’t any grand story behind the store name. I like the word blah and wanted something chic sounding as well. So what’s better than combining tres and blah together?

What five words would you use to describe your personal style?

Vintage, nerdy, wanna-be-cool-fashionista (lets pretend that’s one word,) random, and rad.

What brought you to SL as a creative space?

I wanted to get jiggy with clothes. Does that make sense?

Who (or what) do you turn to for creative inspiration--

in RL and/or in SL?

If I see something in RL, like in a magazine or just a feeling I get from a song, that will inspire me to get something going. I look to my friends in SL quite a bit for inspiration as well.

What kinds of things-- people, styles, etc.-- get your attention in-world?

Oh my, hmm... Basically, anything that isn’t run of the mill trendy. I am so amazed by quite a few fashion bloggers out there that rock the vintage style. They can put together outfits with tops or skirts that I would not have even considered using and they look dang cool.

What surprises you most about your life as a Second Life fashionista?

Just being called a fashionista! That’s a shocker.

Which of your own pieces do you find yourself wearing most often?

My skins for one. I like my skins, haha. Plus I’m always working on them. Another thing I wear often would be the DIY top.

We’ve come to count on Tres Blah for edgy skins, avant-garde accessories, and unconventional, artsy pieces that make all of our wardrobes more versatile and varied. Do you have any plans (or hopes) to expand upon these successes and produce other treats we can adorn our avatars with?

Wow, that’s quite a description I’m not entirely sure I’m worthy of, but thank you! I am currently working on creating more bags and incorporating sculpts in clothes. As soon as this new skin line is released, Hiccup, I want to move forward with that.

Who has the better wardrobe-- Julliette Westerburg or her RL counterpart?

Well, Julliette does have a slamming wardrobe but she doesn’t have some of my cute RL purses and my fave blazer.

Let’s end with an easy question. What three musicians are at the top of your playlist right now?

Love this question!

1. ANORAAK - Nightdrive with you

2. Air - Missing the light of day

3. Neon Indian - Mind Drips

This month I am pleased to feature SHIKI by Shinichi Mathy. This month, coinciding with St. Patrick’s Day, I have chosen to showcase the color green. Green is synonymous with relaxation and calmness. These designs from SHIKI are certainly relaxing and are a must have for men as we transition into spring.

The first outfit is bright, and truly reflective of the shamrock green color. The pine green turtle neck and evergreen scarf are a perfect combination as we change from winter to spring. I absolutely love this look. It is so much fun and bright, which is sure to brighten your day. The second outfit, which consists of the pine cardigan and olive jeans, is a fun combination with a mix of green tones. The lighter olive jeans compliment the pine cardigan. Be sure to layer up this outfit for a unique look! Lastly, the third outfit is another favorite of mine. The denim suit in olive is a unique look which will definitely get you noticed. This stand out color is a fun formal look for men. All of these looks will compliment and enhance all of your existing clothing, while adding a fun spin this month!

Be sure to check out more awesome designs from Shinichi Mathy at his mainstore: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Shiki/91/153/. Also to stay updated on all the updates from SHIKI be sure to visit http://shikidesign.blogspot.com/.

With the snow giving way to spring outside, its hard to not think about the sea-sons changing. That’s why, in this edition of the mini-guide, we’ll be exploring boho dresses to wear this spring.

*Reale* Candy Flower tunic dress

While it may look sunny outside, it’s still pretty chilly. This conservative long-sleeve number from Reale is a good way to fend off the cold. My favorite part is the intricate detail work on the bodice -- a touch of warmth for a cold day. Shown in indigo blue, 200L

{SMS} Boho Cute Dress

This dress from So Many Styles is a great deal, coming in a three-pack sold for the price of a single dress. Green is always a great spring color, and the splash-es of pink along the border add a refreshing twist. Shown in Green, 3-pack on Xstreet 200L

Zaara : Mrinali Skirt

This asymmetrical skirt from Zaara reminds me of a kercheif. A giant, gorgeous kerchief with rich, bold colors and exquisite texturing. This refreshingly different skirt is perfect for a day at the beach. Shown in Dusty Lilac, 365L

+KiiToS!!+ Asian onepiece

This light, airy dress from KiiToS can be worn by itself or with a cute pair of jeans. The bright birds and flowers along the border are festive and whimsical, ideal for a sunny day. Shown in bird, 150L

Linden Lab aquired the website Avatars United in late January, which is sort of a digital-world Facebook for avatars, in a continuing effort by Linden Lab to reach out to its residents and foster social networking. A number of problems cropped up along with the acquisition, including a few security holes regarding registration, but overall the website seems to be able to hold traffic fairly well. A user, after registering their avatar, has a photo area, option to feed RSS to their page (I personally feed Artist’s Voice and Shopping Cart Disco to mine) as well as a photo area (currently no support to send photos to AU direct from SL; I look forward to this feature in the future via postcard) and the ability to create groups.

The website clearly says “Beta”, and besides Second Life users it supports several other communities from various MMOs around the internet, including World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and EVE Online.

As I mentioned earlier, there are RSS feed, photo, and group applications available, but there are also blog applications and an SL specific in-world-to-AU application called SL Blips, created by MSo Lambert. SL Blips ( http://www.avatarsunited.com/apps/slblips ) has a HUD available at XStreetSL, and will allow you to update your Avatars United page via the /999 channel. User beware, however - the updater will publish your location as well.

Avatars United has a little way to go before it will be entirely useful as a social networking tool; right now the limitations are too large. However, I would recommend registering and reserving your name for future use.
