PROFILE OF FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

Egypt’s Food Processing Industry (FPI) represents 50% of the total manufactured output, with a total value of EGP 31 billion (US$ 5.5 billion), in 2004, and a strong annual growth rate of 20 per cent.

The Egyptian food processing industry comprises 4,700 registered enterprises forming the formal sector which represents 20% of the total number of the food processing enterprises, and employ roughly 250,000 skilled workers. About 87% of the formal FPI companies are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which are focused on local markets as well as on the export ones.

The FPI has a high potential for growth, mainly, because of the availability of low cost raw material supplies and low labor costs compared with the other global and regional competitors. Foreign companies including Nestle, Kraft and Unilever have already invested heavily in Egypt.

The Food Processing Industry in Egypt is divided, according to the labor productivity in 2004, into the following sub-sectors.

Value added per employee in FPI sub-sectors

FPI sub sectors Value added per

employee (USD)

Beverage 10.100

Dairy products 7.780 Processed meat, fish, fruit & vegetables 5.660

Other food 4.350

Grain mill products 4.080

Export revenues of FPI companies amounted to USD 625.8 million in 2003.

Egypt’s FPI exports of fruit, vegetables and juices among selected regional and global competitors.

Egypt’s FPI exports of cheese and curd among selected regional and global competitors

Egypt's export performance in fruits, vegetables and juices is outstanding among its regional and global peers. Exports of fresh, chilled, and frozen vegetables are continuously increasing.

The company also produces virgin and extra-virgin olive oil for the local market. Olive Hill owns a farm on the Alexandria in which produces about 30% of its olives. The company’s prices are: Extra virgin olive oil 1,26-1,4$/lt (in bulk), pickled olives 0,37$/kg. Bottles for olive oil sold in the local market are imported due to the lack of high quality bottles produced locally; the cost of the bottle represents nearly 30% of final product price.Due to this high cost the company is evaluating the purchase of a small plant to produce jars and bottles. The cooperation sought by the company is to expand its oil and olive market by producing under a foreign brand.

PROFILE OF THE ENVIRONMENT SECTOR

The accelerated development of the Egyptian economy is placing a considerable pressure on the available natural resources. With the growing industrial activities, the demand on environmental-friendly technologies for a cleaner production and better management of resources has been continuously increasing throughout last decade.

The sector mainly regards the following sub-divisions: - Water Treatment - Waste Management - Air pollution reduction I- Water Treatment:

Water quality represents a major challenge in Egypt. Population density and growth, industrial growth and the lack of sanitary systems all contribute to increasing the demand for drinking water and waste water management. Moreover, industrial water needs are expected to rise from 3.6 BCM/year in 2000 to 5.5 BCM/year in 2017, bringing along a greater need for waste water treatment. It worth mentioning that waste water flows have currently reached 3.5 BCM/year, but only 50% of this quantity follows any treatment.

The Egyptian market for water technologies expands considerably since 2004. Trust of bi- and multilateral donor agencies and developments funds in Egypt's environmental projects increased, making local financing components for water infrastructure projects easily accessible.

II- Waste management:

Waste management in Egypt is far insufficient; no recycling systems, improper transportation and uncontrolled dumping are common practices. Much of Egypt's waste is still being burned, affecting human health in an extremely negative way.

The Egyptian Government, in an effort to solve the problem, decided in 2002 to privatize the waste management sector and plans for establishing a Solid Waste Management System were latterly published. This field is among the main Egyptian sectors expected to attract investments, and capitalize on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol.

Page 29: Second MENA-OECD Ministerial Meeting and Business Forums3.amazonaws.com/zanran_storage/ · Second MENA-OECD Ministerial Meeting and ... “Second MENA-OECD Ministerial Meeting and

- 29 -

Facts & Figures: - Egypt has more than 45 governmental owned facilities that process Municipal Solid

Waste; - Only 2 facilities are being registered as CDM projects; - Most of the other facilities are not working due to lack of financing and inefficient

governmental management; - Egypt has over 45 factories processing MSW with a combined capacity of about 4

Mil tons/year. They could develop as CDM projects directing almost 18 Mil US$/year (180 Million US$ during a 10 year period).

III- Air Pollution Reduction:

Air pollution is another subject that worries the Egyptian Government and in particular the Governorate of Cairo. With 15 million inhabitants, the city of Cairo is by far the most polluted spot in the country. Sand, industrial sites, vehicles, burned garbage and industrial waste contribute to the emission of fine particular matter (PM10) and carbon dioxide. This can potentially result in climate change, the salination and inundation of the Nile and changes in rainfall patterns. Egypt is highly sensitive to these developments and strives to reduce carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions. Especially entrepreneurs who wish to export are forced to comply with international and national emission standards. Articles 34 to 74 of law 1994, for instance, define maximum degree of the air pollution that workers can be exposed to.

A growing number of companies and organizations are operating in the area of air protection. There is, however, still need for equipment, testing and measurement systems, consultancy certifying and training. Only filtering and measurement equipment is produced locally so far. Once again, foreign firms can conclude contracts with local distributors for the delivery of equipment and technologies.

Project description Aquasana is working in the water treatment and desalination sector in Egypt, as a manufacturer and importer of the necessary technology and equipments. It established a new corporate firm, ROTEC, to work mainly as a producer of Potable water from desalination plants. ROTEC has already acquired and constructed an operational field in Marsa Alam zone in the Red Sea Region, installed a desalination plant and today operate, at a minimum capacity, providing the zone with 300m3/day. ROTEC intends to expand and extend its operations in Marsa Alam, increasing its potable water production form 300m3/day to 3000 m3/day, an investment of approximately €1,500,000. Marsa Alam has a worldwide reputation for its sea and natural areas beauty; during the last decade new hotels and resorts were constructed and many are being planned to fully utilize the available resources to develop the urban community within the region. Such establishments are, increasingly, suffering shortage in drinking water supplies. Aquasana, having developed a market study, believes that installing its new water desalination plant will strongly help the Governorate implementing its plans to increase the region’s abilities to attract new investments. On the other side, decreasing the drinking water prices in Marsa Alam will encourage the existing hotels expanding their capacities and improving their labors operational standards. ROTEC has already two contracts to supply water through pipes downstream from the plant and is developing another three contracts with total sales of €2,057,400.00. The International partner is expected to supply the reverse osmosis water desalination plan.

Project description The firm recycles post-costumer PET, the major part from used PET bottles, to produce fibres, which after a spinning phase exit the industry as filaments with different thickness to satisfy a wide range of textile and mainly carpets industries in Egypt. The produced fibres have a creamy colour and pass a bleaching phase to be nearly white. Such fibres, because of their poor colour characteristics, have a low price. Fibertex is considering and searching for a new technology to produce sparkling white fibres having a double selling price. These white fibres are being imported today mainly from Japan and China; producing them here in Egypt would allow Fibertex to produce better filaments and expands its market even to the apparel industries. The project includes doubling their recycling capacity, after having acquired the new know-how, by purchasing 8 new Italian units, being technically the best available technology in the field with its particular characteristics. This project will increase the factory production capacity from 17 ton/day, its present capacity, to 35 ton/day within three to four months from its implementation. Today, the Egyptian market consumes around 100ton/day of White man-made fibres.

PROFILE OF THE PACKAGING SECTOR

Packaging manufacturing is a large and diverse industry. By its nature, the packaging industry depends on the fortunes of downstream customers in the supply chain.

The largest end markets for packaging products are food and beverages. Food packaging accounts for approximately 40% (US$ 175 billion) of all packaging applications, while Beverages represent about 18% (US$ 80 billion).

Packaging is a significant industrial sector with annual sales of EGP 8 billion (US$ 1.4 billion) and an estimated consumption rating between 10-12 kg per capita.

Egypt is at the midway stage between the life cycle profile of developing countries, characterized by a rapid growth in the use of glass and metal, and the developed countries, characterized by a high growth rate for flexible and rigid plastics.

This more or less means selling more basic glass and metal packaging into developing countries in Africa and other regional countries, and a high selling margin of board and plastic into developed countries and later in to Gulf States.

The global packaging sector has annual value of US$ 417 bn in 2002. The most developed companies have consumption rates of packaging of 90-160 kg

per capita but are experiencing slowdowns in the rate of increases in packaging consumption. Source: Egypt's Packaging Sector Development Strategy-Development options limited 2004

The packaging industry in Egypt is considered a new industry striving to grow and compete in international markets.

Packaging markets are expected to increase with an annual growth of 20% for the next three years. This is due to an anticipated increase in exports as Egypt recently signed a tripartite agreement on the Qualifying Industrial Zone (QIZ).

For The Metal Packaging: the two largest manufacturers of tin cans are both operating of full capacity (47.000 tons per year), whose production is mainly used in the beverages and processed foods sub sectors because tin is cheaper than aluminum.

The Glass Packaging: the designed capacities are at 182.000 tons per year, yet the glass packaging companies are operating at only 171.500 tons. Two producers are having spare capacity of 10.500 tons which should be brought into productive use.

The industry consists of four general segments classified by material type: paper and board, plastics, glass and metal.

The largest segments of the industry are board and plastics, accounting for over than 60% of the world market in packaging. Across all the consumer goods, beverage, pharmaceuticals, and plastics are the fattest growing form of packaging. Source: Egypt's Packaging Sector Development Strategy-Development options limited 2004

The balance of trade has improved from a negative balance of EGP 1.1189 bn in 1999 to negative balance of EGP 760.6 mn in 2003, due to the opening of Egypt’s polyethylene manufacturing facility.

Egypt comes in the 11th position among the top 15 regional exporting countries, with exports being focused on three segments, cartoon boxes and cases, sacks and bags, and Plastic Packaging. The other packaging segments focus on meeting local market demands
