Instructional Focus
Referred to as IF Period of our day for an intense study in
various curriculum areas Used for remediation, deeper study, or
acceleration of content Some students are pulled for extra help by
support teachers (student support, early intervention, or gifted)
Accelerated Reader Each students’ AR level (color dot) is based
on the grade equivalent of their STAR test. Just as the AR level is based on the
individual student, so are their AR goals. Students take AR tests independently! Points and accuracy matter in 2nd Grade!
Students must have a minimum of 70% + their points to receive their 2nd grade reward.
AR Superstar 50 points with 90% accuracy or higher

Weekly Communication Folder
Comes home weekly with samples of student work from the previous week, a behavior report, and other important information.
Please read the Second Grade Eaglet!
It will let you know what your child is studying in each subject, as well as important upcoming events, assignments, and tests. (Most teachers are sending via email)
HomeworkThe homework is your child’s. It should be
in his/her handwriting, and is his/her responsibility to have in class the next day! East Lake discourages students returning to the classroom to get books and/or homework they forgot to take home. Your child was provided a binder to keep his/her agenda and all homework in one place to ensure organization.
Weekly Work Check Agenda Nightly! Homework/Assessments can fall on any day of
the week. Homework is not graded, but for practice and to reinforce skills.
Students are assessed weekly in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. These assessments include daily work, quizzes, etc.
Science/Social Studies tests will have a study guide and be announced ahead of time.

Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT)
• Wifi • Each responsible for own device• Hands on your own device only!
Behavior Every 2nd Grade teacher uses a responsibility log. Students sign the log for misbehavior and poor
work habits. A mis-conduct letter will be sent home if needed. Rewards and incentives are given to students that
do not sign the responsibility log. School wide we are moving towards an online
behavior program called Class Dojo. Teachers can reward points for appropriate choices and take away points for inappropriate ones. The system tracks behavior and creates reports as needed.
Grades
2nd grade will be using the standards based report card.
Students will be assessed each nine weeks in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies based on the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards.
Grades
4
Exceeds
Beyond the expected
level at that point in time
relative to the standard.
3
Meets
Met the expected
goal for the grading period.
2
Progressing
Making progress
towards but has not met
the standard.
1
Emerging
Requires additional
support and interventions
to achieve the standard.
0
Critical Need
Not making progress towards
meeting the standard.
Please note that obtaining a 3 “meets” on the report card during the first 3 grading periods does not mean the student has reached the goal of
proficiency, rather, the progress is meeting the expectations for that period of time. Final grade proficiency can only be determined at the end of the year.
DOL quizzes (Daily Oral Language)
• Taken each Friday• 5-6 sentences to correct with the appropriate
capitalization, punctuation, and grammar• Taken DIRECTLY from our Monday through
Thursday’s morning work• The students complete the morning work
independently. Then we go over it together, writing the correct answers on the overhead as we talk about them. Students are responsible for correcting any mistakes.
• If students are attentive and make the corrections, everyone should score perfectly each week.
Testing STAR – Students take the STAR test independently in the computer
lab. This test measures reading vocabulary and comprehension. Math Masters – 2nd graders have five minutes to complete 100
math facts with 100% accuracy.
(0-18 addition/subtraction mixed) Fountas and Pinnell- Students are tested individually by a teacher.
This test measures reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. IKAN & GLOSS- Students are tested individually by a teacher.
This test measures math mental strategies. End of Year Math Assessment- This test includes the majority of
the 2nd grade curriculum. We will monitor our progress as we move through the year.
All are administered 3 times during the year!
Attendance Absence Info
– Send note within 3 days- emails to teacher are acceptable
– Letters will come home from office after 3, 5, and 8 absences.
Tardy/Checkout info School starts at 7:45 a.m. School ends at 2:22 p.m.
– Tardies and checkouts are combined and reported as “Tardies” on the report card.
Transportation If there is going to be a change in
transportation, you must send a note that morning. Without something in writing students have to stick to their normal routine for afternoon transportation.
We can no longer accept transportation changes by email!
PTO
PTO – Membership is $5.00 for the entire family.
PTO helps fulfill many needs throughout the school year for students and staff.
For example, they supplied every 2nd grader with a binder and Monday folder this school
year!
2nd Grade Donation
2nd grade has requested a $40.00 donation: 2 grade level field trips Cost of transportation for all trips Class T-Shirt
We rely on this donation, but also understand there may be other expenses that occur throughout the
year for pictures, artwork, parties, etc.
Second Grade is the Best!We are all very excited about this school year.
If you ever have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to call and/or email your child’s
teacher to set up a conference.
Thank You So Much, Second Grade Teachers!
