Thesecondgradeyearisdividedintofourquarters.Duringeachofthesequarterssubjectsandliteraturearelookedatwiththethemeofkindnessbeingcreated,coveted,commanded,andcompassed.

Quarter1:Kindness Created ThisunitrequirestheCCAsainttostudyaBiblicalandscientificaccountofcreation.TheywilllearnhowHIscreationshowskindnesstomankind.ThescientificprocesswillbeusedassaintsseethattheBiblicalaccountofcreationisscientificandthatscienceonlyfurtherproveswhatexistsinGod’sWord.Theywilldiscoverhowerosion,weather,andsinhavechangedourworldovertime.Saintswillseehowputtingnumberstogetherinadditionandtakingamountsawaythroughsubtractionwillcreatenewnumbers.Theywillextendtheirknowledgeofpatternsandgeometricalshapesastheycreatequiltsofkindness.Thesequiltswillleadthewaytostorymappingandbeabasisfortheirliteraturebook:TheJosefinaQuiltStory.Thesaintswillalsodiscoverwaystocreatekindnessthroughart,music,andPhysicalexpression.

Quarter2:Kindness Coveted Whilewecovetkindness,weareunabletoproduceitonourown.GodmadeacovenantwithpeoplethatpromiseuskindnessifweobeyHisword.Duringthisunit,thesecondgradesaintstudyworldhistoryfrom1922-1199B.C.includingtheOldTestamentpatriarchsthatreceivedthiscovenantfromGod.AstheystudytheperiodofhistorywhenMosesledtheIsraelitesoutofEgyptianslavery,theywilllookathowtheUndergroundRailroadledpeopleoutofslaveryinAmerica.ThesaintswillenjoytheawardwinningLiteratureofTheDrinkingGourdastheystudythepeoplethatcovetedkindnesssomuchtheywerewillingtorisktheirownlivestofreeslaves.InscienceSaintswilldiscoverpropertiesofmatterandmagnetism.BuildingfromTheDrinkingGourdandtheirpreviousstudyofGod’screationofEarthandspace,thestudentwilllearnaboutconstellationsbeyondtheDrinkingGourd,betterknownasthe“BigDipper”.

Quarter3:Kindness Commanded Duringthisthirdquarterofsecondgrade,thesaintwilllearnabouttheperiodoftimewhenGodallowedHispeopletoberuledbyKings.TheywillstudyrulersformallovertheworldincludingthelineofDavidthatwouldsomedaybringustheKingofallKings.Duringthisunit,thesaintwillseehowsomerulersledwithkindnessandothersdidnot.TheywillunderstandthatGodcommandsustobekindandthatobediencetoHimisrequiredtogrowkindnessthroughourselves.Intheirliteraturebook,TheBearsonHemlockMountain,theywillreadaboutaboywhoisbothobedientanddisobedient.Hisadventuresrequirehimtobeveryresourceful.Throughtheirscientificinvestigations,thesaintswilllearnaboutresourcesavailabletothemandhowpeopleproduceresources.
