SECOND DEGREE BURN FROM BOILING HOT WATER
March 2014
SITUATION:
Living in a 3rd-world country has a lot of disadvantages. One of them being
not having hot water in the kitchen sink. The boiler is only connected to the
bathroom.
Every Friday for the last 5 months I have been disinfecting my Tupperware 1 Liter
bottle in the following way:
1. Fill bottle half way with water.
2. Drop of dish soap.
3. Heat it in the microwave for 2 minutes.
I have done at over 20 times so I’m not sure what was different. Another problem
here in Mexico is the electricity. It is very unstable. I suspect that there was a
power surge while I was heating the water.

The microwave was about to beep so I stood in front of it. There
were only 10 seconds left.
I put my hand near the handle to open it when it beeped. At
exactly 8 seconds I heard, “boom” and the door flew open. I
tried to get out of the way, but as I was backing away the boiling
hot and soapy water landing on my upper right chest. I was
wearing a cotton t-shirt and my first reaction was to rip it off. I
screamed and my husband came running. Once he figured what
was going on, he grabbed my bottle of cooking oil and poured it
all over my chest. This took away the pain immediately but I
was still in shock.
I then put on another shirt and we went to the all night clinic.
Upon my arrival there were a lot of people, so they made me
wait over an hour. I was shaking from the pain, but I guess the
lady with the sore throat arrived first.
The doctor gave me an ointment and told me to keep it covered
until it formed a scab. He also gave me ampicillin to prevent
infection.
We arrived at home around midnight and I tried to sleep, which
was impossible.

Day 12:
Today I went to see my dermatologist. I
can’t stand the drying and cracking of
my gigantic scab.
He said that the wound is infection free
and gave me a cream to help the final
healing process.
I have to finish the antibiotics (another 2
days)

My disability is over so I am going back to school
tomorrow. I’m excited, but nervous about putting
a bra on.
