Why being a mentor?
Why not being a mentor?
oMost people don’t say “No” when being invited to be a mentor
oBut some considerations should be addressed.oTry to ask and discuss with the wanted mentors “I don’t have time.”
Quick calculation: 2 hours * 12 months = 24 hours = one day! “I am just good at my field”
Mentors do not solve mentees’ problems. Mentors’ Wisdom and Experience in problem solving are valuable.
“I cannot take responsibility for the startup’s performance.”
Absolutely not. Mentors build leadership of mentee.
How to do mentoring?• Be patient
• The job of mentor is not to solve startups’ problem. Mentoring is process that builds the entrepreneurs’ problem solving capability.
• Relations between a person and person(s)• Target: delta of change, even personal change
• Trust and commitment• Assume you can learn something from every person• “Talk less and Ask more”. • Really, truly pay attention, don’t just act like you are• Never equate your experience with another person’s• Ask a question that goes to the heart (not the head)
• An evolving process• Ground rules and disciplines• Go with the flow• Avoid traps

Proposed Steps of a Mentoring Program
Raise awareness and start building appropriate expectation
oAppropriate expectations – of both mentors and mentees - are foundation for long-term, committed mentorship
oStart by inviting business people to your events and meet your startup community
Be well-prepared for the contents of the events. Don’t waste people time
Make it pleasant and comfortableShare stories. Explain the challenges. Don’t hype.
Orientation and Networking Events
oBe focused on what you want from the events:Mentorship is the theme
More mentors interested in the program
More mentees interested in the program
oHaving both mentors and mentees at the events
oGive people time to understand the others
Matching Events
oPurpose: define mentor-mentee pairs
oMake people really think about who they want to work with in
the next 6 or even 12 months
oThe first two or three meetings are critical:Talk with mentors and mentees after each meeting
Get experienced mentors to talk with new mentors
Monitoring & Facilitating
o The purpose of monitoring is to support and improve mentorshipo KPIs are necessary.. o Just real impact is the delta of change of the menteeso Be ready to support mentors and mentee with all resources in handoWhen a problem needs to be remedied:
Mentorship is a disciplined process. Return to rules and principles of the program. Be respectful to both mentors and mentees Transparent communication process
Graduation and next relations
oA great chance of acknowledging and showing respect to the mentors
oA valuable opportunity for mentees to expand networks and connections
oPrepare mentors and mentees for next, hopefully higher, level of relations
Assessing and Revising
oThis is an internal process
oThe purpose is to improve services provided to
entrepreneurs and startups
oBe patient. Making mistake is not a problem at all
Building alumni community
oAlumni = Asset of mentorship programs
oAlumni include both mentors and mentees
o Just another mentoring program with long long-term
commitment
