SEAWEEDS  refers to several species of macroscopic, multicellular, marine algae.

The term includes some types of red, brown, and green algae

TYPES OF SEAWEEDS

• Green seaweed (cholorophyta)  is the most diverse group of algae, with more than 7000 species growing in a variety of habitats.

Like the plants, the green algae contain two forms of chlorophyll, which they use to capture light energy to fuel the manufacture of sugars, but unlike plants they are primarily aquatic.

Green seaweeds are directly eatable by people. On some occasions they are used as a great source for fertilizer and also used as animal feed (Usually given to

Chickens for early growth

• Red seaweeds (Rhodophyta) - The red algae Kappaphycus and Betaphycus are now the most important sources of carrageenan, a commonly used ingredient in food, particuarly yoghurts, chocolate milk and repared puddings.

Most rhodophytes are marine, although freshwater species are found; these generally prefer clean, running water, but with some

exceptions

• Brown Seaweeds (Phaeophyceae)- the Phaeophyceae or brown algae is a large group of mostly marine multicellular algae, including many seaweeds of colder Northern Hemisphere waters.

They play an important role in marine environments, both as food and for the habitats they form.

The brown algae include a number of edible seaweeds, and a number of brown algae contains alginic acid that is extracted commercially and used in a large number of products.Sargachromanol G, found in brown algae, may be anti-inflammatory.
