JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: Tonight’s matchup between Seattle U and USF is part of the nationwide Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of Jesuit education. Both Seattle Uni-versity and the University of San Francisco are Jesuit schools. The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project highlights more than 90 games this season between men’s and women’s teams from the 28 Jesuit colleges and universi-ties across the United States. Each of the 28 is dedicated to strong academics and teaching women andmen to serve others and live a faith that does justice. The spotlight project includes awareness announcements during these designated games and during gamecasts on radio and television; and other awareness opportuni-ties. Jesuit, Catholic colleges and universities in the United States have more than 200,000 students currently and more than 1.7 million living alumni. The Jesuit educational mission began in Europe approximately 500 years ago. For more information on Jesuit higher education in the United States, go to: www.ajcunet.edu.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE: This continues a busy stretch for the Seattle University men’s basketball squad. The team flew back to Seattle Tuesday morning after playing at Maryland Monday night, practice Wednesday, and then fly to San Francisco Thursday afternoon. The Redhawks face the University of San Francisco Friday night, fly back to Seattle Saturday, and head right into their next game, the home opener against Cal Poly Sunday. The team will have two days of practice to prepare for Oregon State Wednesday, Nov. 17, and then they leave for Irvine, Calif., Thursday, Nov. 18, for the subregional round of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, with three games in three days.

SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO: The Dons begin the 2010-11 season with five letterwinners, including three starters, returning from a squad that posted a 12-18 record last season, including a 7-7 record good enough for fourth place in the West Coast Conference. The Dons will need to replace three-time all-conference selection Dior Lowhorn, who led the team by averaging 18.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 2009-10. Junior forward Angelo Caloiaro is the team’s leading returning scorer after averaging 8.9 points per game. Last Sunday, the Dons defeated Menlo College in an exhibition game, 95-62, with Caloiaro leading the way with 17 points. Cody Doolin scored 15 points, and Ra-shad Green contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

SEATTLE U VS. USF: This will be the 26th meeting all-time between Seattle University and the University of San Francisco, but the first meeting between the two Jesuit schools in 30 years. USF leads the series, 18-7, including an current eight-game winning streak over Seattle U. These two teams met for the first time dur-ing the 1951-52 season, with USF winning, 75-62, in San Francisco. Seattle U won the rematch the next season in Seattle, 87-76. The most famous meet-ing between the two schools took place on March 14, 1958, in the West Regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Led by Elgin Baylor, Seattle U earned a 69-67 victory on its way to the NCAA title game. After Seattle U swept two games from USF in the 1958-59 campaign, the two teams did not play again until Seattle U joined the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1971-72. USF dominated the conference meetings, winning 15 of the 18 contests over the nine-year span Seattle U was in the WCAC. Seattle U’s last win over USF came at the Seattle Arena in the 1975-76 sea-son, an 81-70 decision. Seattle U has defeated USF only twice in 13 meetings in San Francisco, the last time a 60-58 victory in 1958-59.

CARDIAC HAWKS: Seattle University won nine games last season by five points or less. When the season concluded, the Redhawks had outscored their oppo-nents by exactly one point, 2,489-2,488.

ALL IN THE FAMILY: The last name Dickerson is well-known around Seattle, thanks initially to Michael Dick-erson, who came from Federal Way to play at Arizona before playing professionally for Houston and Memphis of the NBA. Michael’s brother Cole is a freshman for the University of San Francisco, while his sister Salena is a senior on the Seattle University women’s hoop squad.

POSTSEASON SITUATION: Seattle University is not eligible for the NCAA Tournament until 2013, but the team is eligible to be selected for the NIT, the CBI, or the CIT this season. After not making any of the post-season tournaments last year, the team has made it a goal to play well enough to earn a spot in one of the 2011 postseason tournaments.

THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Cameron Dollar is in his second year as the head coach of the Seattle Uni-versity men’s basketball team. After leading the team to a 17-14 record in 2009-10, he was named Inde-pendent Coach of the Year. He did not need to leave the city of Seattle to accept this position, as he had been an assistant coach at the University of Washing-ton under Lorenzo Romar for seven seasons. In 2008-09, the Huskies won their first outright Pac-10 regular season title since 1953. Dollar also was instrumental in helping Washington reach the Sweet 16 in both 2005 and 2006. Dollar joined Romar at Saint Louis in 1999, helping the Bilikens win the Conference USA tournament championship in 2000. After spending one season as an assistant for Pat Douglass at UC Ir-vine, Dollar became the nation’s youngest head coach in 1998, taking over the program at Southern Califor-nia College (now Vanguard University), where he went 11-22 in one season. As a player, Dollar helped UCLA win the 1995 NCAA Championship at the Kingdome in Seattle.

A FAMILY AFFAIR: When looking for coaches to join his staff, Cameron Dollar did not have to look far to fill one of the assistant positions, just up the family tree. His father Donald Dollar joined the Seattle University men’s basketball program last year after a long and distinguished career of coaching high school bas-ketball in Georgia. He earned three state champion-ships, 16 regional titles, 11 appearances in the state semifinals, and eight chances at the state title. Over 35 players who played for Donald Dollar have gone on to play at the Division I or Division II level, with four players having played or presently playing professional basketball. After moving into the college ranks and seeing success at his alma mater Morehouse College, Dollar served as an assistant coach at the University of West Georgia for the past two seasons.

RELISHING THE SPOTLIGHT: This season the Seattle Uni-versity men’s basketball team will play five games that will be televised on a regional basis, beginning with last Monday’s game at Maryland on Comcast SportsNet Washington and Comcast Sportsnet Northwest. Four home games will be carried by FSN Northwest, start-ing with the Nov. 17 contest against Oregon State.

THE ENGINE OF THE OFFENSE: While the attention was on other players, point guard Cervante Burrell served as the glue of the team whenever he was on the court. He scored a season-high 18 points in three games last season, at Washington as well as in the final two games of the season against Portland State and at Utah Valley. He averaged 13.3 points per game in SeattleU’s 17 victories and 9.1 points per contest in the Redhawks’ 14 losses. He led the team with 108 assists and pulled down 121 rebounds, including a season-high nine rebounds in the season opener at Oklahoma State. Burrell scored 16 points, including the final two points on a layup with eight seconds re-maining in regulation, against Fresno State. He scored 17 points during SeattleU’s 51-point victory at Oregon State and also collected 17 points in the home victory over Cal State Northridge.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP: The Seattle University squad will receive the benefit of experience from two seniors, both from Phoenix, Ariz. Guard Garrett Lever, son of former NBA player Fat Lever, led the team in steals last season with 45, including a season-high seven steals at Cal Poly on Dec. 3, 2009. Lever played in all 31 games, starting six of the final eight games of the season, averaging 3.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest. He scored a season-high 13 points twice, both times against Eastern Washington. He also earned eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals against Sacramento State on Feb. 13, 2010. Forward Alex Jones made a significant improve-ment as the 2009-10 season went along. He scored in double figures in each of the team’s last seven games, including a season-high performance of 24 points and nine rebounds against UC Davis on Feb. 16, 2010. After averaging just 3.2 points per game in the first ten games of the season, Jones began to significantly contribute to the team with a 16-point effort against UC Irvine on Dec. 15, 2009. He averaged 11.7 points per game in the final 2/3rds of the season to finish at 8.9 points per contest.

LOCAL FLAVOR: The 2010-11 Seattle University roster has a distinctive bent towards Seattle products, as 10 of the 13 players on the roster reside within easy driv-ing distance of the campus. Several players, including Aaron Broussard from Federal Way High School and Fredrick Wilson and Sterling Carter out of Franklin High School, gained playoff experience by taking their teams deep into the Washington State High School Tournament. For players such as Brandon Durham, Taylor Stevens, and Mark McLaughlin, playing for Se-attle University is a homecoming after spending time at out-of-state schools.

IT BEGINS WITH AB: Aaron Broussard enters his ju-nior season as one of the team’s leaders, coming off a sophomore season in which a slump did not ex-ist. He averaged 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 2009-10, fourth on the squad in scoring and second in rebounding. He scored in double figures in 17 games last year, including a season-high of 21 points at Portland State on Super Bowl Sunday. He hit a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left in regula-tion to give the Redhawks a key road victory. Brous-sard notched a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds at Eastern Washington. He also made major contributions in the team’s first two victories of the 2009-10 season with 16 points against Fresno State and 17 points against Weber State.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE; Gavin Gilmore played his first full season of collegiate basketball last year, earning the start in 30 of the team’s 31 games. He averaged 4.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in 2009-10. Gilmore started the season well, earning seven points and seven rebounds at Oklahoma State and six points and six rebounds at Portland. He picked up his pro-duction in the final 13 games of the season, beginning with a season-best performance of 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals against Utah Valley at KeyArena. He averaged 6.7 points per game during that final stretch.

HELLO, MY NAME IS ...: Seven new players join the Seattle University roster ready to play in the 2010-11 season. Taylor Stevens is a junior who transferred from Northern Idaho College, where he helped the team win two conference titles. Sophomore Chad Rasmussen played one season for Tacoma Commu-nity College, helping the Titans post a 25-4 overall record. Brandon Durham comes to Seattle U from Lane Community College, where he averaged about 12 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Four freshmen fill out the roster for the Redhawks. Fredrick Wilson and Sterling Carter are reunited after taking the Franklin High School Quakers to three straight state tourna-ment appearances, including the 2009 state title. Mark McLaughlin made a name for himself locally at Inglemoor High School before finishing his prep career at New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire. Jarell Flora averaged 22.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game for Bremerton High School, including a 30-point, 15-rebound effort against perennial power Rainier Beach High School in the first round of the 2010 state tournament. Additionally, Clarence Trent transferred to Seattle U from the University of Washington, but NCAA transfer rules prevent him from playing this year, although he will practice with the team.

NEW FACE ON THE BENCH: Yasir Rosemond joins the Se-attle University coaching staff as an assistant coach. Rosemond was both a player and an assistant coach under Ernie Kent at the University of Oregon. He also coached for two seasons at Redlands Community Col-lege in Oklahoma, helping the team advance to the junior college national championship game.

A WIDE MARGIN: The 51-point margin of victory on Jan. 6, 2010 against Oregon State was the highest for Seattle University since a 55-point victory over Trin-ity Western (117-62) during the 1989-90 season. It was the largest margin of victory as a Division I school since the first regular season game of the historic 1957-58 campaign, when SeattleU defeated Portland State, 104-54, at the Civic Auditorium.

THE KEY TO FUTURE SUCCESS: The Seattle University men’s basketball team returned to downtown Seattle last season, playing all regular season home games at KeyArena at Seattle Center. In 2009-10, Seat-tleU won its last five home games and finished with a 10-3 record at KeyArena. Back when it was known as the Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle University used the downtown arena as its home court from 1964 to 1980. The Redhawks were able to draw the two larg-est crowds of the season in the last two home games against Cal State Bakersfield and Portland State. For the year, SeattleU had an average attendance of 3,548, including five games with crowds of over 4,000 fans. This season SeattleU is slated to host Pac-10 schools Washington and Oregon State at KeyArena, with Virginia and Stanford lined up for the 2011-12 home schedule.

ELGIN BAYLOR COURT: Seattle University opened its first full season at KeyArena Nov. 19, 2009, by renaming the court in honor of Elgin Baylor, the leader of the 1957-58 team that advanced to the NCAA title game. Baylor went on to have a successful professional play-ing career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Known as one of the greatest players in both college and pro basket-ball history, Baylor was also in attendance for Seat-tleU’s game at Loyola Marymount on Dec. 30, 2009.

RECLASSIFICATION STATUS: The Seattle University ath-letics department is currently in Year Three of the re-classification process towards Division I membership. The process began with the NCAA Exploratory Year in 2007-08. The Redhawks are in the midst of four years in which they will count as a Division I school for scheduling purposes but, with the exception of men’s soccer and women’s soccer, the sports chosen for fast-track status, will not be eligible for NCAA titles.

Seattle University head coach Cameron Dollar and as-sistant coach Yasir Rosemond will take part in the first annual “Shots From The Heart”, a free-throw shooting contest featuring 64 collegiate head coaches and 64 assistant coaches. Sponsored by CollegeInsider.com, this program is being held to raise awareness about heart disease, with all proceeds benefiting the Ameri-can Heart Association. Two brackets, one featuring head coaches and the other involving assistant coach-es, have been created with matchups to take place during the college basketball season in the style of the NCAA Tournament. Coaches will compete against one another with winners advancing to the next round. To make the process simple, coaches will not have to ac-tually compete against each other on the same court. Each coach will shoot 25 free throws at his conve-nience. A member of the athletic department will tally the results and the coach with the most points using a set point system advance. Coach Dollar has been matched up against Bill Donlon of Wright State in the first round, while Coach Rosemond will face James Ware of Santa Clara in the opening round.
