As an Expression of Our Love and AppreciationWe Dedicate This Yearbook to

Melinda MuellerWho Has Truly Prepared Us for College and Life

-The Yearbook Staff

Life isn't supposed to befa i r . When l i fe wasdesigned, fairness was notin the specs. Fairness is nota quality that life had insome Golden Age past, orthat it might acquire in aUtopian future. Life fallsdown on all of us without regard to who we are or what we deserve

Life is not built fair and therefore we must be kind to each other.

The statement "life isn't fai/ ' is not a complaint. lt makes as much sense tocomplain that lite isn't fair as to complain that grass isn't orange Reallygetting this postulate means not being disappointed in life because it failsto be fair.

are another matter. These areare supposed to have, and the

statement "H u mans areunjust" is a valid complaint.Forget fa i rness. Work forjustice, and don't require of lifethat it be fair for you to love it.

After I was diagnosed withcancer, my reaction wheneverI heard people say that getting cancer was thebest thing that ever happened to them was thatthose oeoDle should be boiled in oil. Becausehaving cancer was nothing but a reminder olsomething lalready knew: llove the life I'vegot, and want to keep it. I already knew myfriends are terrific, and they proved it when Ihad cancer . I a l ready knew that Seat t le

Academy is awondedul community, and SAAS families proved it by bringingme dinnertwice aweeklor six months (which is why I gained weight duringchemotherapy).

Life isn't fair, but it comes bearing other gifts. One gift it brought me wasthe privilege of teaching you. Being your teacher has been a long-runningjoyous occasion. Thank you for all of it, and Godspeed.

Melinda Mueller (uppet schoolbiology; geometry), B.S.,University of Washingtont l\,4.S.,Cenkal Washington University.Says Melinda, "Teaching is theonly thing other than writ ing thatis never tedious. lt 's challengingon so many levels: intellectuallY,intuitively, creatively, andphysically. I have to draw onevery talent.' A founding facultymember, she is both a scientistand a published poet. lvlelindahas been the lead teacher iorDNA workshops at the Fred

was bom at 5:45 am in Osaka, Japan. At 2 lb., I wasn't expected to make it to I year

old, let alone where I stand now.

By graduating, I am saying good-bye to childhood and I am entering adulthood. Many

people have helped me along the way.

Just to name a few: Mommy, Daddy, Nanie, Grandma Riva, Grandma Mary, Grandpa

Pierre, Uncles Michael and Butch, and S.J. I also want to thank my friends: Mary, Jessica,

Katie, Evangeline, Dori Ann, Maya, and others.

Thank you. You guys are my favorite people on this page.

I will always cau you Elizabeth. lvhen you were a little girl you would insist, when catled "LiZ"that "My name is Elizaklr. " So you $'i always be Etzabeth to me Watching yoll grow up has

been such a delight. I am so proud of you and your many talents. You have always had a gift for

music. I will never forget the time you heard Paul Simon s "Graceland" on the ndio a]ld sat

down at your piano and played it. Now, it is so wonderful to wath you belt out a steamy tune at

the school vocal show. You have alrnr'ays been a natural athlete. From your earliest days dancing

at Verla Flowers, to swing dancing with me on Vinelhaven Island off the coast of Mainq to

moving quickly for the inside shot at a basketbalt game, you exhibited your athleticism. Mosdy,

I am proud of you for the peson you are: your insight, your sensibilities, your personality, andyour wonderful sense of humor. I feel especially blessed that we have b€en "roommates" these

past several years. It witl be so strange to come home and not say, 'Hi Hon . how \ as your day?"

quickly followed with, 'What do you want for dinner?" You are headed off now to new Placesand new adventues. I wiII mjss your dai]y Presence and the oPporhnity to share in all your

highs and lows. You can expect the phone to ring with rcgularity with a "Hi Hon. . how was

your day?" And, when you come home from some distant Place, if I have a tittle notice maybe I

can make chicken with boiled potatoes and b{occoli. Love forever, Dad
