SPECIFICATIONSYARN: The Fibre Co. Cumbria (90% wool, 10% mohair. 238 yds/100 gm skein): scaffel pike (01), 1 skein.GAUGE: 1 patt repeat (20 sts) = 2.75” (7 cm), and 28 rnds = 4“ (10 cm) in Cable pattern, after blocking.NEEDLES: 1 - 16” (40 cm) US 4 (3.5 mm) circular. 1 - 16” (40 cm) US 6 (4 mm) circular and set dpns, or needle size to obtain gauge.NOTIONS: Spare circular needle in comparable size (see worthy of note), crochet hook and smooth waste yarn of comparable gauge, darning needle, locking stitch marker(s). SIZE: 16.5” (42 cm) circumference, unstretched, 9” (22.75 cm) height.SKILLS: Provisional cast-on, reading cable patterns from charts (see useful tips).

WORTHY OF NOTE This hat begins with a provisional cast on, then a deep folded brim is worked in a 2x2 rib. Once the ribbing is complete, the provisional cast on is unpicked and placed on a spare circular needle and the stitches are joined to created a folded brim. While I found it easy to place the provisionally cast-on stitches onto my larger needle, you may find it necessary to transfer the stitches to a 2nd smaller needle if the stitches are too small to fit comfortably on the larger needle.

When working from the Body Chart on Rnd 13, and the Decrease Chart on Rnd 3, you will need to remove and replace the locking EOR marker in order to work the final C4L. If you choose to place markers identifying the pattern repeat, you will need to remove and replace each marker in order to work the C4L that the marker divides. Unique abbreviations are listed on pg. 3. For additional commonly used abbreviations in this and other KW patterns, visit: kelbournewoolens.com/abbreviations.

DIRECTIONSBRIM: Using smaller ndl, provisionally CO 96 sts. Join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. PM indicating beg of rnd. Work in Brim Ribbing for 4” (10 cm). Transfer provisionally CO sts to spare ndl. Fold work in half with WS together, and join folded hem as follows: Next Rnd (Join): *(P tog 1 st from front ndl with 1 st from back ndl), (k tog 1 st from front ndl with 1 st from back ndl), (k tog 1 st from front ndl with 1 st from back ndl), (p tog 1 st from front ndl with 1 st from back ndl); rep from * around - 96 sts. Change to larger ndl.

Begin Working From Charts: Work Rnds 1-20 of Body Chart once, then Rnds 1-14 once more. Piece should measure 7” (17.75 cm) from folded edge.

Begin Crown Decreases: Work Rnds 1-11 of Crown Decrease Chart - 30 sts after working Rnd 11. Rnd 12: *K2tog, k1, ssk; rep from * around - 18 sts. Rnd 13: *K2tog; rep from * around - 9 sts.

FINISHING: Break yarn. Thread through live stitches 2-3 times and fasten off. Weave in remaining ends. Soak in cool water and wool wash, and block to measurements.

USEFUL TIPSOur preferred method of the provisional cast on is the crochet provisional cast-on. A full tutorial can be found at: kelbournewoolens.com/tipsandtricks/provisionalcaston
