SEASON PREVIEW

2012-13 PROVIDENCE BRUINS

The AHL’s Providence Bruins have fi nished their training camp, exhibition schedule, and now the fi rst two regular season games of the 2012-13 campaign.

The P-Bruins opened the season on Friday, October 12, falling to the Man-chester Monarchs 3-1, and then dropped a 4-2 decision to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on October 13. Despite the disappointing opening week-end, Providence will regroup for a rematch against Manchester in New Hampshire on Friday, October 19, before heading to Springfi eld on Octo-ber 20 to face the Falcons.

After fi nishing 12th in the American Hockey League’s Eastern Con-ference last season, and missing the playoffs for the third straight year, Providence is hoping to rebound with the infl ux of experienced players on its roster—a lack of which plagued the team last season.

Providence has seen the arrival of Chris Bourque, who is one of the play-ers to have competed at the NHL level, and who comes in with a wealth of AHL playing time and success.

Traded to the Bruins after the 2011-12 season, Bourque has played parts of seven seasons in the AHL—mostly with the Hershey Bears—and has tallied 21 or more goals in fi ve of those seasons. Last year in Hershey, he recorded a career-high 66 assists and 93 points.

Bourque also played a signifi cant role on the Hershey teams that won con-secutive Calder Cups in 2009 and 2010, and was a member of the 2006 win-ning squad as well (though he only suited up for one playoff game that year).

The P-Bruins also returned their leading goal-scorer and top point-get-ter, with Craig Cunningham and Carter Camper both coming back to Rhode Island. Cunningham’s 20 goals led all Providence players, while Camper netted 18 goals and added 30 assists for a team-high 48 points.

Last season’s defensive leaders David Warsofsky and Matt Bartkows-ki will also be back in the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The duo was one-two respectively in scoring for the defensive unit, and will be joined on the Dunk’s blueline by former Michigan State standout Torey Krug.

A three-year starter for the Spartans, Krug signed with the Bruins in April, and will look to make an immediate impact on Providence. A Hobey Baker fi nalist last year (the award given to the nation’s top college player), Krug is a heady defenseman who was one of the most effective defensemen at the collegiate level. Krug’s 34 points were the fi fth-most for any defense-man in the nation last season, and led all players in the CCHA.

In the crease, Michael Hutchinson and Niklas Svedberg will battle it out for ice time after the departure of last year’s starter Anton Khudobin.

Hutchinson posted a 2.36 goals against average in 29 games last season for Providence, the lowest of all goaltenders on the team. Svedberg, who was signed by the Bruins to an entry-level con-tract in May, played seven seasons in the Swedish Elite League and Swedish First Division before joining the P-Bruins this season.

With the AHL season just beginning, Bruins Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney weighed in on the development of the B’s prospects in Providence Black & Gold.

“I think the expectations are very high for this group overall,” he said. “I think that we’ve got players that are returning, that are looking to establish themselves and move forward in their careers, and hopefully get back to the NHL. And then new guys that are coming in and saying, ‘hey, I’m on the scene and I want to make sure that I’m moving forward in my develop-ment’.” ---Evan Sporer, BostonBruins.com

NCAA PREVIEW

BACK ON CAMPUS

With the college hockey season under way, the Bruins NCAA prospects are back on campus and ready for 2012-13. The B’s have players skating throughout the United States on teams com-peting in the Hockey East, ECAC, CCHA and WCHA conferenc-es. Most conferences began play the weekend of October 12-14.

Forward Alex Fallstrom returns for his senior season at Harvard, after becoming the second-highest scorer on Head Coach Ted Donato’s Crim-son squad last season, despite missing time due to injury. This season, a healthy Fallstrom is looking to lead Harvard to the team’s fi rst Beanpot championship since 1993. He also has his sights set on helping the Crim-son to an ECAC Championship run and an NCAA Tournament birth.

Brian Ferlin, the fi rst player from Jacksonville, Florida to be selected in the NHL Draft, is back at Cornell coming off a very successful freshman campaign when the winger was awarded both the ECAC and Ivy League Rookie of the Year awards and fi nished in the top-12 nationally in points per game (0.81). Ferlin’s season was cut short due to injury, but he said at B’s Development Camp this past July that he’s feeling better than ever.

Matt Grzelcyk is a member of the Boston University Terriers just months after being drafted by his hometown team. The blueliner is part of a peren-nial powerhouse in Hockey East after spending the past two seasons with USA Hockey’s successful National Team Development Program. Grzelyck was a big part of the U.S. roster that earned the country’s fourth consecutive gold medal at the IIHF Under-18 World Championship and said his USA Hockey experience has played a huge role in preparing him for the next level.

Mark Goggin is a 5’11,” 185-pound center in his third season with the Dartmouth College Big Green in the ECAC. While he did not play during the 2010-11 season due to injury, Goggin played in 14 games in 2011-12, notching six points (3-3) for Dartmouth as a rookie. He’ll look to im-prove this season and help Dartmouth reach the NCAA tournament.

Zane Gothberg has suited up for the University of North Dakota between the pipes in two exhibitions games - and two wins - to kick off his freshman season. UND is in the midst of an incredibly successful stretch of hockey, as the team won its third consecutive WCHA championship last year and will enter the season ranked fourth in the nation. Gothberg, a 20-year-old with two years of experience with the USHL’s Fargo Force, hopes to make an immediate impact and challenge for the starting role on an already established UND squad.

Like former Fargo Force teammate and fellow B’s prospect Goth-berg, forward Colton Hargrove is also in his freshman year at the age of 20. The bruising, 6-foot-2 winger is looking to bring a physi-cal game to a Western Michigan team that captured its second ever CCHA championship last season and was ranked 11th in the pre-season poll. Hargrove said in July at Development Camp that his goal is to help the Broncos get right back there this coming spring.

Defenseman Rob O’Gara is in his freshman season at Yale, joining Fall-strom, Ferlin and Goggin in the ECAC. O’Gara is with the Bulldogs after playing two seasons of prep hockey at Milton Academy. At 6-foot-3, O’Gara is an imposing blueliner who has attended the Bruins last two development camps and is expected to garner plenty of attention across the ECAC. Ben Sexton is in his junior year at Clarkson University, and the cen-ter is wearing the captain’s “C” for the Golden Knights. Last season, Sexton served as an assistant captain and scored more than a point a game in an injury-shortened campaign. Sexton’s eight goals were fourth on the team, and his 21 assists were a team high. The forward told BostonBruins.com at Development Camp that he hopes to help lead the Golden Knights into the ECAC playoffs, and continue to be a leader for the team’s younger players during his third collegiate season.

KICK OFF NEW SEASON WITH A SPARKJUNIOR RANKS

While Providence has started its 2012-13 campaign and NCAA student-athletes are in the midst of their prospective seasons, Black & Gold prospects in the junior ranks have gotten off to a hot start. The B’s system includes fi ve players in the Ontario Hockey League and one recent draft pick in the United States Hockey League.

2012 draft pick Matthew Benning steadily improved with the AJHL’s Spruce Grove Saints during the 2011-12 season, adding four goals and adding 14 assists in 44 games, before joining the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints for 2012-13, where he has 2-1=3 totals in four games. While his offense is on the upside, the blueliner believes that his physi-cal defensive game is most important. “I think I’m more of a stay-at-home D-man,” said Benning after being drafted by the Bruins in June. “Just kind of like rough and tough…hard to play against kind of D-man.”

Anthony Camara started his third OHL campaign with a spark as he recorded a hat trick for the Barrie Colts in the club’s opening game, a 6-4 win over the Ottawa 67’s on September 20. Camara is coming off a sea-son in which he scored 16 goals, the most he’s ever tallied in juniors. He stands a solid shot at raising that bar if he continues his current scoring output, which has seen him score nine goals in as many games.

At Development Camp this summer, Camara said he looked to continue to distinguish himself with his physical play. “I’m just a power-forward, up-and-down winger,” he said during camp. “I like to get my nose dirty in the corners and I just like to fi nish checks.”

If there’s a hotter player than Camara right now, it’s Seth Griffi th. In the London Knights’ fi rst two games, which they won by a com-bined score of 16-4, Griffi th scored fi ve goals, including a hat trick, and was named OHL Player of the Week. In London’s fi rst eight games, he has nine goals and 15 points. Last season, Griffi th net-ted 45 goals—more than twice what he scored the season prior (22).

“I believe as long as you’re working hard, good things will happen,” the 19-year-old said at Dev Camp in July. “That’s just how I’ve been my whole life and I think I’ll do it until the day I stop playing.”

Cody Payne, now in his second season with the OHL’s Plymouth Whal-ers, may be the most physical, bruising forward the Bruins have playing in

juniors right now. Providence Head Coach Bruce Cassidy noted Payne’sphysical style during Development Camp and Payne also acknowledged that nature of his game: “I see a guy and if he’s in my train tracks there’s no doubt I’m gonna fi nish the checks.”

After inking an entry-level deal with the Bruins on September 6, Mal-colm Subban is back with the Belleville Bulls. The goalie recently posted his best save percentages of the season, leading the Bulls to a 2-1 shootout win over Brampton on October 10 with a .969 save per-centage and stopping 44 shots en route to a 4-1 victory over the Ot-tawa 67’s on October 13 while registering a .978 save percentage.

This past summer, the 2012 fi rst-round pick helped lead Team Canada past Russia in the Canada-Russia Challenge, winning both of the games he started and starring in the decisive series-clinching overtime period. Following his fi rst-round selection in June’s draft, General Manager Peter Chiarelli said, “He’s obviously a real good goalie, a tremendous athlete, in-credible leg thrust post to post, and he’s a real good kid—solid character.”

At 6-foot-5, defenseman Dougie Hamilton is arguably the top prospect in the B’s system. The 19-year-old from Toronto was not only a physical fi xture on the Niagara IceDogs blueline last season, but also an offensive threat, scoring 17 goals and recording 55 assists in just 50 games to lead all OHL defensemen in points. Hamilton joined Subban in helping lead Team Canada to the Canada-Russia Challenge series victory this summer. In Niagara’s 2012-13 season opener, he showed his multidimensional force on the blueline by welcoming OHL rookie Connor McDavid with a hard-nosed hit and notching an assist for the IceDogs in a 4-2 win over the Erie Otters. ---Evan Sporer and Caryn Switaj, BostonBruins.com

ANTHONY CAMARA

AMATEUR SPOTLIGHT

Forward Anthony Camara certainly has the confi dence to drop the gloves.

The 19-year-old Bruins prospect has spent three seasons in the OHL, and recorded 39 fi ghting majors, according to HockeyFights.com. Over that span, he has amassed 363 penalty minutes. Camara is a physical player who has no problem mixing it up.

But when it comes to his offensive confi dence, Camara needed a jumpstart.

At Boston Bruins Development Camp this summer, that jolt may have been provided in the form of advice.

“I knew what was going on with a few things [with my game] but they just told me to be a little bit more selfi sh with the puck,” Camara re-called of the advice he received at Dev Camp. “Shooting the puck. I do have offensive ability, and they wanted to see it more out of me.

“It defi nitely gave me the confi dence to come in this year, and work my hardest in the summer, and put up a good start like I did so far.”

As the Barrie Colts opened their season, Camara displayed that confi -dence. The six-foot forward scored a hat trick in the team’s season opener, leading the Colts to a 6-4 win over the Ottawa 67’s. In the team’s fi rst three games, he recorded at least a point in each, scoring four goals in that span. His torrid pace has continued through Barrie’s fi rst part of the season, as Camara has notched nine goals in the team’s fi rst 10 games, helping Barrie to a 8-2 record.

“I just wanted to have a good start to the season,” Camara said, who at-tributed his early success to “the coaching staff, Dale Hawerchuk, and putting me in the right positions, and right situations in the game, and helping me to succeed.”

Bruins Assistant GM Don Sweeney acknowledged the prospects swelter-ing start at Providence Bruins practice on October 11. “Anthony Camara has gotten of to a solid start, putting up numbers there,” he said.

There have been plenty of signs that Camara’s offensive game has been coming around. In each of his fi rst three seasons, the young forward in-creased his goal totals, going from six, to eight, to a career-high 16 last season.

Still, as Camara adds another dimension to his game, he said it is impor-tant not to leave behind another.

“I don’t want to get away from what got me there in the fi rst place; my physicality, and sticking up for my teammates. I want to get space out there for the other players on my team to do what they do, and just kind of help out offensively as well.”

For Camara, a large part of his development has been a higher comfort level on the ice. The forward said that has come from gaining confi dence, like he did this summer at Development Camp, as well as playing on lines with talented players.

“I’m comfortable skating up and down the ice and I’m getting faster and stronger out there,” he said.

But while Camara’s early offensive outbreak has been noteworthy, he’s focused on sustaining the success.

“The start was defi nitely great, but it doesn’t mean anything if I just let off the pedal now. I just want it to keep going, and keep on the good start and hopefully carry it on to future games.” ---Evan Sporer, BostonBruins.com

PROSPECT OUTLOOK

Three weeks into the major junior season, it is becoming evident that the time and effort the Boston Bruins have spent scouting in Ontario is paying off, with fi ve impact prospects all putting up impressive perfor-mances in the early going.

Boston’s top choice in the June draft is also making waves in the OHL this year. Malcolm Subban is justifying the faith the team showed in him to make the Belleville puckstopper the 24th player off the board in Pittsburgh. With his outstanding quickness and athletic ability, Subban has been an early season workhorse for George Burnett’s Bulls, starting in eight of the team’s fi rst nine games. He’s still a work in progress in terms of his overall technique, but Subban looks like the fi rst-round pick he was in June and appears to have a lock on the No. 1 goalie chores for Team Canada at the 2013 World Junior (Under-20) Championship.

2012 fi fth-rounder Seth Griffi th was named the fi rst OHL player of the week of the new season, keyed by a hat trick in the season opener. Al-though undersized and lacking in breakaway speed, the 19-year-old winger possesses outstanding hands and offensive hockey sense. He in-stinctively knows where to be on the ice, and is proving that he should not have been passed over in his fi rst year of NHL draft eligibility. The London Knights will lean heavily on Griffi th this year, and he will challenge for the OHL scoring crown.

Also attracting notice in the OHL is Plymouth Whalers power forward Cody Payne, another fi fth-round pick in June. The Floridian is fi nally get-ting a chance to play a regular role in his third season of major junior and rewarded coach Mike Vellucci’s confi dence with timely scoring and physi-cal play. Possessing good size, skills and a rugged style, Payne is breaking out as one of the Whalers more consistent scorers and less than a month into the season has already equaled his goal output from an entire year ago.

Dougie Hamilton is off his torrid points pace from last season, but he played a physically dominant contest against top OHL pick Connor McDa-vid to open the year. He has lost none of the luster in his fourth OHL cam-paign. There is nothing left for him to prove at this level, and if not for the lockout, there is little question he would still be in Boston at this time. He just needs to keep things simple, continue to refi ne his game in Niagara.

The most pleasant surprise in the OHL from a Bruins standpoint is this prospect edition’s focus player, who is off to the best start of his four-year major junior career.

Talent analysis: Despite not having a large frame at a shade under 6-foot-1, Camara nevertheless plays a rugged, physical style and is known as one of the league’s top hitters. He’s picked up the offense while play-ing alongside Barrie scoring leader and Winnipeg Jets fi rst-rounder Mark Scheifele.

Camara is using his speed and quick hands to crash the net score goals in close. Additionally, he’s shown off an impressive release, beating net-minders with shots from the outside while backing up defenders with his wheels. When you toss in Camara’s physical edge and toughness, he’s on pace to be one of the OHL’s most complete players this season.

Outlook: The Bruins recognized Camara’s offensive potential when they took him 81st overall despite a lack of consistent production, but he was slow to justify that faith last season. After the trade to Barrie, the Missis-sauga native made some key plays in the 2012 OHL playoffs and has stepped up his game in the early going.

He may not have the creativity to be a top-two line player in the NHL, but he is proving that when skating with the right players, his willingness to go into the dirty areas of the ice and cash in on scoring chances makes him a versatile option for his club.

Camara’s leaner, quicker and in top shape, yet seems to have lost none of his snarl from past seasons. As it stands right now, Camara looks like a safe bet to one day carve out a niche as a higher-end NHL third-liner, with the chance to develop into something more.

We’ll be back in two weeks to analyze the AHL’s new-look Providence Bruins and how that team is faring.
