Ansonia returns with a veteran rosterBy Kyle [email protected]
ANSONIA – Having lost just one senior to graduation, Ansonia enters the 2017 football sea-son with a lot of experience on its roster.
The Tigers have to replace Trevor Beam, whom they lost to graduation, but have the rest of their core back. They also have many newcomers as they’ve increased their roster to more than 40 players.
“That’s way more than we’ve had in the past,” Ansonia football coach Eugene Hoening said. “I think last year we finished with 26 or so.”
Having so much talent returning is valuable, Hoening said, as long as the players don’t get complacent.
“The good news is you have about the same players coming back. The bad news is you have about the same players coming back,” said Hoen-ing, who is entering his 37th year leading the Ansonia football program. “If they’re complacent with what they’ve accomplished as underclass-men, they’re not going to get any better. You need guys who are still hungry to improve.”
While most of the faces are the same, Ansonia will employ a new offense this season. Coach Matt Macy is leading the implementation of a veer offense, which is a form of the option.
The Tigers will primarily run out of their new offense although they will have the ability to throw the ball, too.
“I like to run the ball,” Hoening said. “I think Coach Macy likes to throw more than I do, but we’ll find that happy medium, I suppose.”
Hunter Buckingham will lead the Ansonia offense as the Tigers’ quarterback.
Brock Shellhaas, Jarvis Thwaits, Max Wardrip and Reece Stammen all will contend for time at running back.
Devyn Sink and Cody Sanders will play at flanker while Logan Warner, Payton Setser and Hunter Muir are competing for time at split end.
Rygh Fortkamp and Taylor Brewer are in con-tention for playing time at tight end.
Nathan Denniston and Ross Shook will start at offensive tackle for Ansonia. Austin Helmke and Andrew Rowland are slated to start at guard. Dylan Burnfield and Austin Ward are competing for the center spot, and either player could also contend for time at guard.
On defense Ansonia will continue to employ the 4-4 formation that it installed last year.
Brewer and Thwaits are slated to start at defensive end. Denniston, Shook, Cameron Prater, Ward, Helmke and Preston Prater all are vying for time at defensive tackle.
At linebacker Wardrip, Charles Murphy, Row-land, Fortkamp, Stammen, Setser and Aydan Sanders all are in contention for playing time.
Muir and Shellhaas are leading the race for time at safety while Buckingham, Warner and Ethan Fischer are battling for time at corner.
“None of this is written in stone,” Hoening said. “Some places only have one kid because other boys are being tried at a linebacker spot or they’re being tried at the safety spot. We’ve been (mixing them up) from one scrimmage to the next.”
Along with some experienced players, Hoen-ing also is relying on a strong group of assistant coaches that includes Adam Hall, Stuart Beisner, TJ Phlipot and Macy.
“The coaching staff has worked really hard to prepare the boys,” Hoening said. “I have to com-mend the coaching staff for their dedication.”
Last year Ansonia went 2-8, but Hoening is hopeful that the Tigers will rebound this season and be in contention for a CCC championship.
“What other reason would you be playing?” he said.

ARCANUM – Jason Schondelmyer knows the Arcanum football team will return to the Ohio High School Ath-letic Association play-offs. Whether that’s this year or sometime in the future, though, is less certain.
Schondelmyer returns this year to coach Arcanum, a program he led from 1999-2005. During his first stint in Arcanum he led the Trojans to the playoffs in 2002 and 2005 and was named the Cross County Conference Coach of the Year twice, Miami Valley Coaches Association Division V Coach of the Year twice, South-west District Division V Coach of the Year and Darke County Coach of the Year.
Since leaving Arca-num, Schondelmyer was a head coach at Versailles, Twin Valley South and Tri-Village along with spending time as an assistant at Kettering Alter and the University of Day-ton.
“I really enjoy it,” Schondelmyer, who spent the past two years at Tri-Village, said of returning to Arcanum. “Like I’ve said before, it’s a place that I enjoyed when I was here before pre-viously and it was a place we always kind of talked about as far as the opportunity if it ever presented itself for my family to move into the commu-nity and raise our boys here.”
Now back at Arca-num, the veteran coach sees a program that is capable of contending in the CCC and com-
peting for an OHSAA playoff spot.
“I think we can be competitive,” he said. “There’s no doubt about it. But we’re just going to have to take it one game at a time.”
How fast Arcanum is able to compete for championships will be determined by how quickly the players buy in, Schondelmyer said. So far the Trojans have done a good job of understanding the changes the new lead-ers have implemented.
“It’s not easy,” Schondelmyer said. “It never is. It’s differ-ent philosophies. It’s change. Our kids are doing a great job of grasping it. I’ve been very fortunate in that I have many former play-ers and many former assistants that have worked or played for me as Arcanum foot-ball players or coaches, and the transition has been easier because of that.”
On offense the Tro-jans will look to pass
more than they have in the past although they’ll still be a run-first team.
“We are going to be a run-oriented offense,” Schon-delmyer said. “There’s no doubt about that. We definitely have the capabilities of throwing the ball, and we plan on utilizing the pass more than they have in previous years.”

are competing for the starting quarterback posi-tion, and both have had good preseasons.
Senior captain Daniel Coats along with juniors Wade Meeks, Devin Keckler and Ethin Hoffman all are in the mix at running back. Sophomore Cory Ross and junior Dylan Burns are competing for the fullback position.
Junior Trevor Fry, senior Isaiah Krauss, sopho-more Austen Cutarelli and senior Wills Trout-wine are in competition for playing time at tight end.
The offensive line is anchored by senior cap-tain Andrew Baker at center, senior captain Alex Weiss at right guard and senior captain Caleb Harter at right tackle. Junior Dane Craport will play at left guard while sophomore Jayden Helts-ley will line up at left tackle.
On defense Arcanum will deploy a variety of fronts that can react to their opponents’ forma-tions.
“We’re a read-and-react team,” Schondelmyer said. “We’re trying to get as many hats to the ball as possible.”
Arcanum will utilize defensive schemes that include four, five or even six defensive linemen.
“We have multiple fronts that we can get into,” Schondelmyer said. “That allows us to play for-mations to our strengths more.”
Craport will start at nose guard for the Trojan defense while Harter, Heltsley and Weiss will see time at defensive tackle. Baker is slated to start at defensive end.
Krauss, Ross, Keckler and Burns are in the mix for time at linebacker. Fourman and Troutwine will play the Trojan position, which is a strong safety-type player for Arcanum.
Coats, Hoffman and freshman Logan Stastny are in competition for playing time at safety. Atchley, Meeks, Stastny and junior Trevor Fry are in the mix at cornerback.
Arcanum has quite a few players with varsity experience but also has several key contributors who are new to the varsity game.
“We have a lot of kids that are getting some of their first full varsity season so I would say we’re kind of green in some areas,” Schondelmyer said.
While there is room for growth, Schondelmyer has been pleased with the team’s physical strength and willingness to learn.
“I think we’re a strong football team,” he said. “We’ve put in the necessary time to be physically strong. I think our kids are very coachable right now. I think they’re like sponges.”
The energy is getting better every day, which could lead the Trojans back to the playoffs.
“Every day we plan on getting better,” Schon-delmyer said. “That’s kind of our goal right now.”

Bradford excited to rejoin the CCCBy Kyle [email protected]
BRADFORD – The 2017 season is a time of transi-tion for the Bradford football team as the Railroaders rejoin the Cross County Conference under the leader-ship of new head coach Chris Hawk.
Hawk, a Bethel graduate, comes to Bradford after two seasons at Tri-County North where he served as the junior varsity coach and ran the varsity offense. He also spent three years at Springfield Northwestern where he was the defensive coordinator and spent one season at Beavercreek.
Hawk is Bradford’s fifth head coach in the past five seasons and inherits a program that spent the past two years playing as a conference independent. The Railroaders didn’t have a varsity team in 2014, instead playing a junior varsity slate. Subsequently the CCC kept Bradford out of the league for the past two years, but now the Railroaders rejoin the league along with Fort Loramie and Tri-Village to form a 12-team conference.
“We’re really excited about that,” Hawk said of rejoining the CCC. “There are some changes going on in the CCC with some new people coming in so it’s a great time.”
Bradford, which went 3-7 a year ago, enters this season hoping to be competitive with its CCC breth-ren.
“We want to be competitive when we come onto the field,” Hawk said. “We want people to know that they were in a dogfight, win, lose or draw.”
The Railroaders enter the season with 27 players, which includes nine seniors. They will rely on a lot of those players to contribute on both offense and defense.
“We are not necessarily a young team,” Hawk said. “We just don’t have a lot of us. So when we have to fill in with these guys, getting them a break and so forth, we need to get the young guys to be able to step it up so we’re not losing as much.”
Bradford has youth at quarterback where it has to replace last year’s starter, Andy Branson, who is out with a knee injury he suffered last basketball season.
Competing to replace Branson as the signal caller are a pair of sophomores, Gavin Trevino and Spencer Fischer.
With a pair of inexperienced quarterbacks in the running for varsity time, Hawk anticipates relaying a lot on the run game.
“That goes back to the point of the young quarter-backs,” he said. “I would love to have a more even (offense), and right now it’s just not a time that we’re ready for that.”
Hunter Penkal will play halfback, Larkin Painter will line up at fullback, and Kyle Mills will play wing. Dialaquan Millhouse will provide depth at each of those positions.
Clay Layman will line up wide at split end for the Railroaders.
The offensive line is less settled. Josh Phillips has emerged as a leader at guard and Hunter Gheen is leading the way at center, but the rest of the line remains up in the air.
“Josh Phillips is our leader at guard on the line,” Hawk said. “Right now he’s probably our rock.”
Phillips also has emerged as a strong player along the defensive line for the Railroaders.
Millhouse will play a linebacker or rover role on defense, Gheen will play linebacker, and Layman will be one of the defensive backs. Beyond that, Hawk is still watching the battles for starting spots play out.
“We’re filling in holes for the other positions,” Hawk said.
Whomever emerges for the Bradford defense, the Railroaders plan to use a lot of styles including 4-4, 3-4 and 5-2 formations.
“A lot of different looks, moving and the intention is to keep moving before the ball gets hiked,” Hawk said. “Get (the offense) thinking, and if they’re think-ing they’re not playing at full speed. That’s the hope.”
Helping Hawk lead the Railroaders this season are veteran Bradford coaches Jim Hart, John Cruse and Jim Wysong. They’re joined on the staff this year by newcomers Stetson Peake, Ron Hoelscher and Lowell Byers.
“We have a good mixture of the young guys that I feel the players can relate to, and we have some of the veteran guys that can use their wisdom and show the guys where they need to be,” Hawk said.

Kyle Shaner | The Daily AdvocateThe Greenville football team is inexperienced this year but still hopeful for a championship season.
Greenville seeks GWOC North titleBy Kyle [email protected]
GREENVILLE – Even though Greenville has a young team, Coach Aaron Shaffer wants the Green Wave to contend for the Greater Western Ohio Con-ference’s American North championship this season.
“We’re definitely a young team this year,” Shaffer said. “We’ve got a lot of inexperienced juniors and sophomores that got to grow up quick early on.”
Greenville will open its season with non-confer-ence games against Eaton, Wilmington and Urbana before playing Stebbins and Trotwood-Madison in cross-divisional GWOC games. The Wave then will take on GWOC North rivals Vandalia-Butler, Piqua, Tippecanoe, Troy and Sidney in the second half of the season.
“There’s no week off,” Shaffer said. “You have to be ready to play week to week and prepare yourself mentally and physically for the challenges every week. You would be hard pressed to find somebody that plays a tougher schedule than any GWOC school does.”
If Greenville can rise to the challenge of the tough schedule, the Wave could contend for a divisional championship.
“Competing in the GWOC, you’re facing elite competition on a regular basis,” Shaffer said. “We want to win the North, and if we can do that then our secondary goals of making the playoffs and win-ning playoff games and things like that, those all come through. But our No. 1 goal is win the GWOC North.”
To achieve the goal of competing for champi-onships, Greenville will try to utilize a balanced offense attack. But ultimately the success of the offense, and in large part the team, will depend on the running game.
“Winning football, at least at elite levels, requires you to run the football,” Shaffer said. “Our goal is to be balanced – 50/50, 60/40 run to pass – but obvi-ously we need to be able to do what teams give us. I do think that a good part of our skill is out on the edge so we may be trying to find ways to get the ball out on the edge, but at the end of the day we’re still going to be a team based on inside and outside zone and power off-tackle.”
Looking to replace 1,200-yard rusher Logan
Eldridge will be a combination of Micah Light, Landon Eldridge, Jarrad Crist and Landin Brown.
Colton Zumbrun, Ethan Emrick, Jacob Goldsmith, Marcus Wood, Alec Fletcher and Carson Clark all are competing for time at wide receiver.
Noah Vanhorn and Noah Walker are contending for playing time at tight end.
The starting quarterback position is up for grabs with Owen Paulus and Tyler Beyke in the mix.
“It’s started to sort itself out, but we’ll continue to give both guys opportunities this week going for-ward,” Shaffer said.
Braden Russell, Derrick Smith, Hunter Anderson, Caleb Anderson, Nathan Fry, Tanner Swisshelm and Zane Clark all are competing for playing time along the offensive line.
“Generally speaking the strength of our team is our experience on our O-line,” Shaffer said. “As a group they’ve worked hard. They’re willing to work. They’re taking the coaching and being pushed hard-er than maybe we’ve pushed in the past.”
Defensively Greenville will utilize a variety of schemes depending on the offense their opponents use. They can line up with three or four defensive linemen, depending on what works best to counter their opposition.
Karsyn Fender, Brown and Russell are leading the way for Greenville along the defensive line.
Light, Tony Sells, John Butsch, Walker and Tytan Grote all are in the mix to play at linebacker.
In the defensive backfield, Wood, Fletcher, Crist, Zumbrun, Eldridge and Goldsmith all are contend-ing for playing time.
“We’re still trying to get it all sorted out, but we’ve got a good group of guys to try to find the right mix of players so we can have success on Fri-days,” Shaffer said.

Dale Barger | For The Daily AdvocateMississinawa Valley wants to end its 30-game losing streak this season.
MV aims to end losing streakBy Kyle [email protected]
UNION CITY – None of the players on Missis-sinawa Valley’s roster know what it’s like to win a high school football game, and Coach Mike Grif-fin wants that to change this season.
Mississinawa Valley is 0-30 over the past three seasons, having last won in its 2013 season finale against Bradford. The Blackhawks are determined to end their losing streak this season
“You’re just looking to win a game. You just go in and compete hard every week, try to win a game,” Griffin said. “It would be nice. It would be a change of pace, especially for the seniors. I feel bad for them. They’ve never won a high school football game. It would be nice for them to experience that. No one wants to go through high school 0-40.”
In their quest to win a game, the Blackhawks will benefit from consistency this year. For the first time in their high school careers the MV football players enter a season with the same head coach as the previous year.
“Trying to get some consistency in here so they can actually learn the intricacies of the offense and defense,” Griffin said. “They’ve got a better understanding of what we’re trying to get done.”
Along with having the same schemes as last year, Mississinawa will benefit from having a vet-eran squad with numerous returning starters.
“To have this second year where everybody pretty much contributed that’s contributing again, it’s kind of exciting because we can practice a lot faster and a lot harder because we’re not having to explain every little detail of it,” Griffin said. “We’re definitely much improved.”
Griffin started out at Mississinawa Valley as an assistant coach in 2015 prior to taking over the head coaching position last year. In his three years at MV he’s seen the Blackhawks improve greatly.
“From the time I walked into the door until the time I took over as head coach to now … this team would destroy the team that we walked in with, and there was some good players on those teams that have left, but just from the under-standing and the knowledge and having that con-sistency of having the same ideas and schemes in place and the same terminology, you can see the kids, they’re picking it up quicker,” Griffin said.
The consistency starts at quarterback where Trent Collins returns as the signal caller. Cody Dirksen will provide depth behind him as a capa-
ble backup.Nate Gladdish also returns to start at running
back.“Basically a three-year starter back there,” Grif-
fin said. “Has looked great so far this preseason. Looks primed and ready to have a good year.”
Gladdish, who is a two-way starter, will be able to get some rest with backup Billy Bridges spell-ing him at times.
Dilyn Rammel will start at one receiver posi-tion while Kyler Mote and Blake Scholl will vie for playing time at the other receiver spot.
Will Hall, Alex Scholl, Josh Fett and Max Dir-meyer all will rotate in at the slot position.
Zeb Hannan returns to start at center while Colton Hines is back to start at guard. Elijah Liv-ingston, who saw some varsity action last year, will move into a starting spot at guard.
Trey Godfrey and Alex Anguiano will take over starting spots at offensive tackle while Mason Hardwick pushes for playing time as well.
The Blackhawks, who will look to run a bal-anced offensive attack, have been encouraged by the strength of their run game in the preseason.
The defense also has shown improvement throughout the preseason.
Bridges, Kenny McFarland, Hardwick and Han-nan will have significant roles on the defensive
line. But they’ll get plenty of rest as MV looks to employ a rotation along the line.
“We don’t see there’s a big drop-off from line-men three through eight so we’re trying to pla-toon our line as much as possible,” Griffin said. “We’re a little undersized up front. At least they could be fresh.”
All four starting linebackers – Dirmeyer, Hall, Gladdish and Dirksen – return from last year.
Playing time in the defensive backfield is still up for grabs with Alex Scholl, Blake Scholl, Fett, Mote, Collins and Rammel contending for the one safety and two corner spots.
“That hasn’t worked itself completely out yet,” Griffin said.
When he evaluates his team, Griffin sees a ros-ter that is much improved from last year and a team that will benefit from the CCC’s new sched-uling format that keeps the league’s top teams off the Blackhawks’ schedule.
“We open with Union City,” Griffins aid. “It’s the last time we’re going to play them for at least the next four years. They’re off our schedule. You want to try to win that one. New Bremen is a new opponent for us, (Midwest Athletic Conference) school, always tough type of situation. Then we go into Bradford and Tri-Village and (Twin Val-ley) South and Ansonia just trying to win one of those. The nice thing is we kind of got out of the gauntlet. We still have to play a lot of tough teams, but we don’t have to play Covington, Miami East and Tri-County North back-to-back-to-back so maybe we can stay a little healthier in the beginning of the season and get through and squeak out a few wins this year.”

NEW MADISON – In its first season in the Cross County Conference, the Tri-Village football team hopes to contend for the league champion-ship.
Robert Burk, who replaces Jason Schondelmyer as the Tri-Village head coach, wants the Patriots to aim high during his first season guiding the team.
“They were 3-7 last year,” the former Mount Healthy High School defensive coordinator said. “We’d like to improve on that. I feel very strongly that we want to challenge … you don’t come out here to shoot low so we’re challenging for the CCC title; that’s our goal every single year.”
Tri-Village played its first season of high school football in 2015 against junior varsity competition. The Patriots moved up to the varsity level against non-conference opponents last year, and now along with Bradford and Fort Loramie they join the CCC to give the league 12 teams.
“It’s nice to have teams in the county that you’re playing,” Burk said. “Last year they played people from Indianapolis and all the way down to Gamble so that was difficult to drive around. Some of the drives are long but not like going to Indianapolis or anything like that. I’m really excited to be a part of this league.”
As they enter the CCC, the Patriots have 25 players on their roster including nine seniors.
On offense, Tri-Village will utilize spread forma-tions but will look to establish the run first.
“We are going to pass the ball a little bit,” Burk said. “We do run out of spread personnel and a little bit of two-back spread. So we will throw the ball around a little bit, but it’s all based off the run. We’re going to run the ball first then throw the ball to help set up the run if we need to, take shot shots in the play-action.”
Senior Trey Frech is slated to start at quarter-back after backing up Jonny Wilson a year ago. Austin Bruner also could see some time at quarter-back.
Bruner primarily will line up at the slot position on offense along with Noah Burns. Christian Rick-er also will start at receiver while Camren Munchel will play a tight end and H-back role.
Jared Buckley, who ran for 1,153 yards a year ago, once again will be the featured player in Tri-Village’s offense out of his running back position.
“He’s the real deal, man,” Burk said. “He’s got to learn to finish plays and be more physical, but he’s got all the tools to maybe get some money to go play college somewhere. He’s going to be our featured guy for sure offensively and defensively. He’s kind of the engine that makes us run; that’s for sure. We’re going to ride him as much as we can.”
Along the offensive line, Tri-Village will depend on the senior leadership of Dagan White, Jack-son Plush and Trevor Mote. Mason Sullenbarger also will be one of the key players up front for the Patriot offense.
Defensively Tri-Village will utilize a 4-3 scheme and will be aggressive in attacking opposing offens-es.
“We’ve got to try to be aggressive,” Burk said. “Right now we’re teaching them how to play defense; we’re teaching them how to read and attack blocks and things like that, but one we get a chance we will put in some pressures and some D-line stunts and things like that to kind of give us an advantage and get people off track.”
Just like on offense, Sullenbarger, White, Plush and Mote will anchor the defensive line. Freshman Dylan Finkbine also will see time at defensive end.
Buckley will be a central part of the Tri-Village
defense as the middle linebacker. Camren Munchel also will be a key player at linebacker for the Patri-ots.
Ricker, Bruner and Burns will all see time at safe-ty while Mason Coby, Dillion Ballard and Zacharie Dowler will line up at cornerback.
Tri-Village won’t play Covington, Miami East or Tri-County North in its inaugural season in the CCC, which will make the Patriots’ transition into the league a little easier. But they still have room for improvement as they seek to contend in the conference.
“They’ve answered every challenge that we’ve given them, and they’ve improved from the first seven-on-seven to the second to the third,” Burk said. “Then Tuesday we didn’t look very good, and we looked pretty good today. We’re not all the way there. We’re not game ready yet, but we made a big improvement. I think they’re ready, and they’ve answered every challenge we’ve given them so far so I’m looking forward to the season.”

Versailles seeks playoff appearanceBy Kyle [email protected]
VERSAILLES – Versailles has a strong group of upperclassmen whom the Tigers will depend on as they seek to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs in 2017.
This year the Versailles football team is seek-ing its first postseason appearance since 2014 when the Tigers reached the regional semifinals of the tournament before being knocked out by eventual state champion Minster.
Versailles will have plenty of opportunities to earn playoff points this season as its schedule includes Division III Celina, who went 5-5 last year, and Division VI Delphos Jefferson, who went 9-1 and reached the second round of the playoffs.
After those tough non-conference games, Ver-sailles goes into Midwest Athletic Conference play where the schedule only gets tougher. The conference has sent three teams to the state finals in each of the past three seasons.
The fortunate thing for the Tigers is that they are in Division V along with Anna while the rest of the MAC is in Divisions VI and VII. That means if Versailles would make the playoffs it would avoid most of its conference rivals in the postseason, unlike the Division VI squads including Coldwater, Fort Recovery, Marion Local and St. Henry, which appear poised to cannibalize each other come November.
“We have a lot higher chance of missing a MAC team if we make it to the playoffs than if we made it in Division VI,” Miller said. “I think Division VI in the southwest region is going to be a bloodbath.”
To get to the playoffs Versailles will depend on a roster that includes 10 seniors. The Tigers also have a good group of juniors but then have a steep drop-off in terms of experience.
“Our first group on both sides of the ball we feel pretty comfortable with, but all of our back-ups seems to be sophomores, and they inexpe-rienced,” Miller said. “We feel good about our first group, but then if we have any injuries or we’ve got to sub guys if they’re getting tired we get inexperienced in a hurry.”
Versailles will run the same schemes as last year, and on offense will continue to establish the run first.
“We’re definitely going to establish the run first,” Miller said. “Ideally we’d like to have close to an even run-pass ratio, but when in doubt we’re going to try to run the ball.”
At quarterback Versailles has senior Noah Waymire, who saw some varsity action at the end of last season.
Behind Waymire, Garrett Thompson returns to man the fullback position.
“He was one of our offensive MVPs so we’ve got high expectations for him,” Miller said.
Versailles will go for a committee of running backs with George Grow, Kurtis Rutschilling and Noah Grisez all in the mix.
“All three of those guys are very good running backs,” Miller said. “They all start on defense so we’re going to have some type of rotation to try to keep guys fresh.”
AJ Ahrens, who has started since his sopho-more season, returns to start at tight end. Andrew DeMange will start at wide receiver with Derek Cavin also in the mix for playing time.
Along the line, Versailles will depend on five new starters.
“Offensive line we graduated five seniors last year so we’ve definitely got some shoes to fill,” Miller said.
Levi Sherman will start at center and will be flanked by Tyler Gigandet and Ben Albers at guard. Jeffery Ware and Louden Keihl will start at tackle.
Most of the linemen saw some varsity time last year on defense or special teams, which should help them transition to starting along the offensive line.
“It’s been a little easier transition than I thought, but after them we get the sophomores at that’s where we’ve just got to try to improve every day,” Miller said.
Sherman and Ware will start at defensive tack-le this year. Ahrens, Cavin and Evan Hiestand will split time at the defensive end positions.
Albers will start at middle linebacker along-side outside linebackers Rutschilling and Grisez.
Grow and DeMange are slated to start at safety while Josh Steinbrunner will start one cornerback spot. Opposite of Steinbrunner, Jake Poling and Michael Stammen are battling for playing time.
After going 5-5 overall and 4-4 in the confer-ence last year, Miller thinks Versailles can be a competitor in the MAC this season. Ultimately the Tigers’ season could come down to how they perform in a few games against the other middle tier teams in the MAC.
“That middle tier, it’s a dogfight,” Miller said. “There’s basically four games it seems like every year that if they go your way you could be 8-2,
9-1. If they don’t go your way you could go 3-7 or 4-6. It’s kind of a big swing between those. I feel like we can definitely compete with every team in the MAC this year.”
