Sponsor’s Roll – 2015-2016 Season 2015/2016 saw strong growth in the financial contribution from our

support from sponsors, with the welcoming of Schnitz Glen Waverley. Schnitz

provision of junior weekly award vouchers and catering for one of the major

junior events is greatly appreciated, and we encourage all members to support

this outstanding local business located in The Glen food court.

For the second year we would like to thank Le Pine Funerals and club member

Damian Magee for their significant financial contribution, along with long term

financial support from Lewis & McConnell Optometrists Stewart McConnell and

Otter Fencing Glen Otter.

We would also like to acknowledge the product and service sponsorships from

long-term club supporters:

Bennett Signs John Makeham

Fielder’s Choice Mount Waverley David Privitera

Hocking Stuart Glen Waverley Travis Brown

Orlec Electrical & Solar Brad Orwin

These outstanding businesses assist the club with keeping our fees down and

regularly upgrading fields and equipment.

I encourage all members to please support these local businesses, and buy our

contact a drink over the bar at least once during the season.

Sponsorship is of great

importance to Waverley

helps us reduce our

running costs and

therefore keeps the

costs down for our

players.

Sponsorship of sporting

clubs is also beneficial

for sponsors as it can

help their business

develop in ways that

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

President’s Report Welcome and thank you to all attending the 2016 AGM for Waverley Baseball

Club. This is now my fifth year as President.

This year has not been without its challenges as we deal with change in the

structure of the Junior competition. We have had to put a number of charters

into place, and deal with the impact of this on the club generally in our Juniors,

but once again Waverley showed its strength in this area with success on the

field and overall enjoyment of the game by players. As a club though we still

must look at the growth of the club at a local level for the future and bring

youngsters into our game especially at the t-ball level to keep the game in

Australia’s sporting mix. This presents a challenge for the Board to achieve as

most Board members are working full time. The t-ball age group ideally needs

to be accessed during school hours and to demonstrate our fantastic game

within these hours is difficult as we do not have the man power available so this

continues to be a problem for the Board to manage.

Our Senior players this year showed more consistency throughout all levels with

teams finishing in the top half of the ladder. Once again an abundance of talent

is around the club but there is no doubt that with the various Representative,

State & Melbourne Aces team commitments, it makes it very tough to stay with

a consistent winning line up every single weekend for all senior teams. The

upside of this is that it gives a lot more players the chance to get experience in

higher levels and shows the depth of the club that we can manage this

successfully each game.

There is no doubt we are in a transitionary phase at the moment with the

change of direction with the charter programs and the establishment of the

different programs that are around now, but Waverley’s consistency in the local

game is helping to keep the game of baseball solid for participants.

Club 3150 continued to build, and as I have previously mentioned Club 3150

without a doubt further enhances our fundraising and supports the heritage of

the club, reconnecting with our past members.

I have to thank the dedicated effort of the Board to keep the club running

smoothly and efficiently, Terry Fitzgerald, Michael Busch, David Thomas, Sue

Kennedy, Neil Burke, Adrian Dunn, Jack Dunn, Kane Longstaff, Stephen Brown

and Travis Brown and the winter representatives. Thanks must go to our sponsors who help either financially

or in kind that reduce the running costs of the club, and as always the quiet group of volunteers who help in the

bar, in the canteen, put the bins out, mark diamonds, coach juniors, score or whatever needs to be done.

It was also with deep sadness over the past 18 months that the club farewelled four valued members of the

club. John Paice, life member and past president, Chris Peacock, life member and past and current Treasurer

of the Winter club, and Doreen Page, Mother of Tony and Darren and a valued supporter of the club and Neil

Thomas, Club 3150 member and supporter. I will personally miss each of these members and the

contributions they made to the club, but I also know that they will all be greatly missed by the club in general.

In conclusion I always encourage all members to get behind the club. If you can, please nominate for the

Board of Management, but also with such a big club please never hesitate to offer a hand to volunteer to help

around the club or run or support a fundraising event, because that is what will help move our club forward in

the future.

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Administration Report Firstly, let me say how much of an honour it is for me to be back with the Club.

Thank you for the opportunity to return, at a responsible level, to a Club with

great history and proud tradition. Personally it’s been a very busy year for me

workwise, and whilst I enjoyed the year, I hope to more actively involved in

coming years.

The 2015/2016 season was a bit of a mixed bag for the Club, with great on-field

success at the Junior level, whereas our aged Masters were the only team able

to ‘get the chocolates’ in seniors. Of course our success at the Rep level on

Sundays was once again, second to none.

Congratulations to the coaching group for pushing forward under difficult

circumstances, with a lot of Ones players lining up for the Melbourne Aces.

Congratulations also to all our State and National reps, and it is particularly

exciting to have some of our Junior players going to tournaments overseas

representing the Club and Australia, and even a couple representing New

Zealand. James Beresford, even though he hasn’t played for the Wildcats in

recent times, is still a proud Waverley boy, and continues to succeed at the very

tough Triple A level in professional baseball.

Naturally, kudos to all the Club Award winners, from the joint Club Champions,

Mitch Hayes and Tyler Dale, right through to the little tackers in Tee Ball as well.

Please also allow me to thank the other members of the Board, in particular,

Sue Kennedy and David Thomas for their assistance in completing the

secretarial functions within the Club. Special mention must also go to Tony

Page and Brad Orwin for their efforts in preparing and maintaining the diamond.

At this point I should also pay tribute to the Monash City Council for their

assistance to looking after our newly detailed fields, making our job just that little

bit more enjoyable. Also, I need to recognise again the volunteer award

winners for their tireless contribution to the Club:

Best Clubman – Denise Page & MIichelle Flintoff

Mighty Effort - Andrew Weller

Best Supporter – Adrian Dunn

Damnlow – Mark Murphy

future of the club,

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Off the field we continue to be strong financially with significant contributions from Club 3150 and Winter, while

the Summer section held its own. Administratively, we had a twelve-person Board, but I think it’s fair to say we

perhaps were not as hands on as we could have been, and we were a little stagnant on the social side –

something we need to address in the near future. I know we are all busy, with full time roles, but I think we

need to be more visible and pro-active.

There were a few off-field achievements throughout the year:

LOI Register

Code of Conduct

Good Sports Level 3 There are still many things to work toward, including:

Risk Management Plan

Strategic Review But by far the biggest challenge facing us is the junior level in terms of numbers. The dwindling numbers in our

junior sides indicate that we have a lot of work to do in this area. The Baseball Operations Committee needs

work in close liaison with our Junior Director and a Junior Committee to coordinate contact with schools, the

league and prospective coaches to recruit and develop players and coordinate an expanded T-Ball competition

and other junior competitions.

The harsh facts of this situation (dwindling junior numbers) are that failure to make this concerted effort could

easily see the demise of the club and potentially lose some or all of our amazing young talent. We have to

make a much larger effort in this area, and soon. Establishing the Junior Committee to build the on-field

operation and future success of the Wildcats is imperative!

Finally, to all of you, please remember that this is your club, and that it will only be as strong as you make it. I

believe that Waverley will again be strong and have another successful season in 2016/2017 and I urge you all

to join together in working for the short, medium and long term future of the club, beginning now. Go Wildcats!!

Juniors Director’s Report

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Juniors Director’s Report This junior season for the Waverley Baseball Club again saw more changes to

the structure, and a different approach to the way we have done things in the

past. Two years ago we were playing Charter Baseball as the Yarra Rangers

and aligned with the Berwick Baseball Club. In the minds of a number of people

this just wasn’t working for us as a Club. We were suffering on field with the

lack of competition. We were struggling with the lack of vibrancy and we were

concerned over the retention rate of our junior players. This lead the Club in

being proactive with Baseball Victoria and working ourselves into a new Charter

that would help us bring back that competition and vibrancy, especially within

our Little and Junior League age groups. The result of this placed us in a newly

created Eastern Athletics Charter made up of Waverley, Malvern, Melbourne,

Blackburn, Ormond Glen Huntly and Upwey Ferntree Gully.

The results from the first year were promising with a more level playing field in

the Charter especially across the Little League level, which was one of the main

aspects that we were after in moving Charters.

Our T-Ball Program, once the envy of all Clubs in Victoria, has slowly eroded to

a point where the red flags have been raised with numbers dropping under 30

for the first time probably ever. This has become the main focus on the Junior

Committee and Board to start implementing ways to recruit kids in to the sport.

During the pre-season and early part of the season we were able to run some

short clinics in a few schools but the work didn’t result in any new numbers on

the field. What we were able to achieve was a better direct relationship with

teachers at various schools so hopefully this will allow more flexibility and

accessibility to the age bracket in schools that we are after.

Our T-Ball sessions this year were run by Andrew Weller and his daughter

Madison. The Club kept the T-Ball sessions on a Saturday morning which was

made even more difficult this year with the introduction of the Little League and

Junior League Charter Academies, which removed a number of people who

would normally have been in a position to assist. Basically Andrew and

Madison ran the program on their own with some parental help on the day. As

a result of this work Andrew was awarded with the Club’s Mighty Effort Award.

“This junior season for

the Waverley Baseball

Club again saw more

changes to the

structure, and a

different approach to

the way we have done

things in the past.”

“We are about trying to

do things better. Better

on the ground. Better

off the ground.

Hopefully we can get

more people inspired

about helping out so we

can make the future

years even better to be

involved at the

Waverley Baseball

Club.”

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Friday Night Baseball saw our teams compete in three different sections: Little League Minor A, Little League

Minor B and the Under 15 competition. The Little League Minor A & B divisions pretty much covered the age

group that would normally have played in our old Rookie Ball Saturday competition, but now moved in to a

Charter model. The Under 15 competition was used as a developmental league for the other clubs, which was

polar opposite to our direction at Waverley in which we had a number of our program suit up and play.

Michael Busch and Scott Dawes looked after our Minor B Pirates in the inaugural season of this competition.

Hopefully there will be changes made by Baseball Victoria as this model didn’t work in the form it was played

in. We put two teams in the Minors A competition with Steve and James Keam leading the Waverley

Cardinals, and Flynn Morrison and Brendan Kane looking after the Waverley Cubs team. The Cardinals

played off in the finals series but one of the more pleasing aspects was having young guys like Flynn, Brendan

and James putting their hand up to help out and give back.

We were hoping that the Under 15 competition was going to be like the one played over the last few years, in

which the games were competitive yet fun and there was a real social feel to the after game. The other clubs

within the Charter went with a younger, developmental group which left our three teams and Blackburn to fight

it out. Simon Campbell and Rob Jones coached the Waverley Braves in to third place, Ben Smith and Ian

Semple lead the Waverley Astros to take second place, and Glenn Otter and Mark Cavanagh directed the

Waverley Rangers to the pennant.

Sunday Little League Major saw the Club place two teams in a very close and vibrant division of junior

baseball. The other clubs within the Charter had good teams so our kids were able to play in a fairly even

competition with fewer weaker teams. The club placed two evenly selected teams in this division, the Cougars

coached by Scott Dawes and Simon Ratcliffe, and the Panthers coached by John Weichard and Rob Jones.

At the end of the regular season the teams finished second and third on the ladder, just behind the ladder

leading Malvern. With a two-week final series, this pitted the teams against each other in the first week of

finals and a closely expected game didn’t eventuate as the Cougars beat the panthers easily, but lost a close

game the following week against Malvern.

The Junior League Major Competition played within the Charter didn’t provide the same vibrancy as the Little

league did. Waverley placed three evenly selected teams within the competition as per the Charter rules of

competition. The Wildcats, Panthers and Cougars all finished first, second and third at the end of the regular

season, generally only losing games against each other during the course of the year. The Wildcats beat the

panthers to win the Charter Championship. The program worked really well with all players training as a group

under the instruction of a very good coaching staff. Many thanks to Ben Smith, Ian Semple, Glenn Otter, Mark

Cavanagh, David Thomas and Keegan Whyte who all put a massive amount of time and support in to this age

group.

State or Metro League. Looking at numbers pre-season for both age groups, we made a decision to request to

Baseball Victoria that we be able to place two teams in State League for both age groups. This was done for a

few reasons, but specifically to continue to give more of our kids the ability to play at the higher level of

baseball, and hopefully retain them on their journey to become senior players. For various reasons we saw a

number of players either cease playing or move to other clubs which made the two teams per age group in

State league more demanding, but worthy of moving forward with. In what was a long and demanding season

for the 16 B and 18 B teams, in which they both saw little success, hopefully the at times stellar play of some of

the juniors playing seniors was proof that the higher level of baseball was helping them.

The Under 16 A dominated the season in all aspects of the game and went on to mercy rule Sandringham in

the Grand Final played at Cheltenham, while the Under 18 A won a tense one run Grand Final against a strong

and up and coming Springvale group.

Special thanks go to Jeremy Young and Andy Hayes who piloted the Under 18 A team, John and Mitch

Kennedy for coaching the Under 16 A team, John Makeham for coaching the Under 16 B team, and finally a

significant thanks to Stephen Brown for all the work he did in not only coaching the Under 18 B team on game

days, but also the behind the scenes work on moving kids through that team and also seniors.

The new Charter saw new opportunity, and this year saw the introduction of the Charter Academies for Little

League and Junior League held on a Saturday morning. A number of Waverley kids were selected which

enabled them to get extra sessions and extra games in against the other Academies.

We saw a number of Waverley kids be selected in to the Little League, Junior League and Senior League All

Star teams. Little league and Senior League finished runners-up in the State Championships, while the Junior

League team were victorious. All three teams then competed in the National Championships as well.

We also saw a number of kids represent Victoria in the National Championships in Sydney. Victorian teams

finished runners-up in both age groups and were well represented by Waverley talent. Jarryd Dale received

the MVP for the Under 16 tournament, while Oliver Dunn received the MVP for the Under 18 tournament. Due

to their outstanding tournaments, both Jarryd and Oliver then travelled with an Australian Squad to play Spring

Training games in the US against high calibre opposition funded mostly by MLB.

Well done to Mohi Kahui and Reece Longstaff who have been selected to play for New Zealand and compete

at the 2016 Under 15 World Championships in Japan. At the time of writing this report we also have Chris

Burke, Liam Evans, Blake Townsend, Kaioh Sato and Mackenzie Salmon who will be trialling for the Australian

team in early July.

Well done to Darcy Longstaff who has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the 2016 Ripken World

Series to be played in late July in Aberdeen, Maryland.

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

I would like to make special mention to David Thomas and the amazing amount of work he has put in to the

junior program this year. His main focus was as the Club Registrar which is one of the harder jobs now

especially with the Charter movements. Dave also volunteered with coaching at the school clinics, helped

coaching a Junior League level, plus scored when needed for Friday and Sunday teams.

To anyone who scored, umpired, set up grounds, and helped with the Xmas function – I thank you.

We are about trying to do things better. Better on the ground. Better off the ground. Hopefully we can get

more people inspired about helping out so we can make the future years even better to be involved at the

Waverley Baseball Club.

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Club 3150 Club 3150, now in its third season, enjoyed yet another successful year. While

membership numbers were down slightly there were contributing factors for

that, but the bottom line is that Club 3150 was able to deliver a profit $3,088 to

the club.

Over its short life Club 3150 now has a cash reserve balance in its account of

$12,369 after expenses for the current year - it is an accomplishment all

connected with Club 3150 should feel extremely proud. But, raising funds to the

club is not the sole driver for Club 3150.

An undoubted highlight of the 2015-16 season was Life Members’ appreciation

day. Club 3150 purchased and presented every Life Member or a family

member with a specially struck Waverley Baseball Club Life Member’s

medallion depicting the year they were inducted to Life Member status. It

proved our biggest attended and best received day with so many Life Members

returning to the club for the first time in many years. And, that’s one of the

purposes of Club 3150 - to celebrate all the people who have helped make the

WBC such a great and successful club.

Club 3150 also purchased 10 round tables as well as accompanying table

cloths. Not only did they well serve Club 3150 during its functions, but also the

club when it held its presentation night.

Importantly, Club 3150 was also able to fund the playing fees of those players

returning from College and minor league baseball in the States. It is important

that the Club supports its young, aspiring players.

Club 3150 also donated a new barbecue to the club. It is something that is

available throughout the year to the summer and winter sections of the club.

Club 3150 members also received a new cap as part of their membership

package - something it also funded.

The committee of Club 3150 would like to thank all those who continue support

it with their membership. We would love to see more people join Club 3150 as

we embark on our fourth season. Information of Club 3150 membership is

available from any of those people mentioned at the bottom of this report.

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Club 3150 has a simple mantra - support the club that supports so many and enjoy the camaraderie that sets

the club apart from the wannabes.

Club 3150 could not be such a success without the tireless work of many. Special thanks must go to Michelle

Flintoff and Denise Page for the tireless work they do in preparing and making each function meal so

enjoyable.

Special thanks also to David Clarkson, Adrian Dunn, Terry Fitzgerald, Peter Flintoff, Tony Page and Geoff

Paice for all their hard work during the season.

Club 3150 looks forward to again providing assistance to the WBC in 2016/2017. Dates of functions will be

made available as soon as the fixture from Baseball Victoria is received.

Treasurer’s Report

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Treasurer’s Report I am pleased to present to the members an audited report for the 2015/2016

year. This report has been prepared by Eugene Ferraro from More Than Tax

Pty Ltd who was appointed by the Board at the AGM by minute to prepare the

reports for the 2015/2016 year.

This year did not see any major initiatives funded within the club, but rather a

hold and see position as the Board was very aware that the changes to the

junior competition would have a major impact on revenues and also the fact that

we did not have a women’s competition for the first time in many years.

Certainly the biggest impact on the club though is the restructuring of the junior

competition. Saturday mornings and Friday nights which saw all year levels

compete locally at Waverley in a domestic completion was a mainstay of the

earnings that went through the canteen and this year has certainly seen this

impact on the income of the Reds Inc. which has seen the gross profit for the

year fall by $7,858.00 for the year. This is a substantial amount overall for the

club and does reflect a fall in the canteen sales that has been happening over

the past three years while the restructure has been occurring. Bar Sales

however have remained stable and reflect just how important this revenue

source is to the club, so thank you to all who make the effort to provide meals

after games and on Thursday and Sunday nights.

The Winter Club recorded a profit this financial year with a net profit of

$7,326.01 a $19.74 increase on 2015. This reflects a very stable Winter Club

with a committed management who do a great job in managing the Winter Club

of the Waverley Baseball Program. I do have to acknowledge the work that

Chris Peacock did in steering the treasury position of the Winter division and I

can only say as many have before me, that I will miss him greatly in helping to

look after the finances of the Winter division.

There is no doubt again that Waverley Baseball Club is facing continued

pressure to keep costs at a minimum and every effort to support the club in its

fundraising efforts is appreciated. Fundraising income was essentially stable,

there will always be ups and downs each year, but a total of $17,624.00 for

2016 was again pleasing to see and this includes funds raised through Club

3150. Club 3150 though certainly has made a significant difference each year

“This year did not see

to this total. It would also be remiss of me not to thank our Sponsors of the club who quietly give each year. It

would be great to see the Junior section of the club run a fundraiser in 2017, and I feel sure that this could be

looked at for the coming season. It must be noted that to date the Christmas Party breaks even each year and

is not a surplus making event for the club.

Each year the Waverley Reds Inc. transfers an amount from its reserves to the Waverley Baseball Club and

this year this amount was $10,000.00. We will also be looking to doing this again this year at the

commencement of the summer season from the banked reserves in the Waverley Reds account ($27,107.48).

This area of revenue is extremely important to the club as it supports the purchase of balls and general

equipment throughout the year, so again reiterate as I have done for the past few years, if you are asked to

assist in the bar or canteen or with meals on a Thursday night, understand that this is an important revenue

stream for the club and enables us to provide players and members with the equipment and facilities they

enjoy.

The Summer club recorded a profit of $591.43 for the season, again a stable result that is only $473.08 up on

the previous year. Spending is conservative and member fees are just covering the day to day running costs

of the club purchases, cleaning and pest control costs, ground maintenance and Monash council costs to

name a few. The online payment system has again worked well and all member fees were paid in full a huge

thanks to our Registrar, David Thomas, who maintains this for the club.

To ensure that the club is keeping up with rising costs we do need to review the Fees for the 2016/2017

season and this will see an across the board rise for Registration fees, however at the date of writing this

report Baseball Victoria have not provided us with information with regard to their proposed fee increases for

the coming season so I defer any discussion on this and refer it back to the Board of Management to decide

when this information is known and advise members accordingly.

Finally, I would like to thank all the Board members for their support and assistance and also the support of

Adrian Dunn and Peter Flintoff who were always happy to offer assistance if I needed it and Michelle Flintoff

and Denise Page who were great at coordinating the meals and presentation night for the club.

In going forward I wish to advise that Eugene Ferraro from More Than Tax Pty Ltd is again happy to prepare

the reports for the 2017 season, and I wish everyone at Waverley continued success.

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Winter Blackcats Seniors 2015 was another memorable year for winter as we fielded four senior teams

again with B, B Reserve and A4 sides making the finals. Unfortunately B grade

went down to Westgarth in another Grand Final. The boys again led by Chipper

had a fantastic year and the end result didn’t reflect the dominating year the

team had. The B Reserve team went down in the Preliminary Final 4-3 and our

A4 side limped to the Preliminary final and our age showed going down 15-2.

Socially again the season was lots of fun with events being well attended.

Special mention to our ladies of the club who work tirelessly behind the scenes

to put meals on Thursday night, at social events, work in the canteen and score.

Denise Page, Michelle Flintoff, Stephanie Evans, Fiona Jones and Melissa

O’Connor your services were invaluable and to the others I have missed I

apologise. Thanks again to our casual umpire Steve Wright and to Steph Evans

and David Thomas who again worked their butt off to look after the junior

program and to the winter committee a big thank you and you’ll get a pay rise.

Finally, to a founding member of the winter program who sadly left us only

recently – Chris Peacock. He again was the backbone of the club – fees,

finances, canteen, bar, you name it he did it. We worked closely together and it

was his dedication and commitment that made the club run so smoothly and

made my job so enjoyable. Chris deservedly won the Best Clubman award!

I congratulate all the award winners:

Geoff Paice Perpetual Blackcat Champion – Matthew Orwin Best Clubman – Chris Peacock Club Most Improved – Randy Senn B Reserve Best Team Man – Corey Poke A3 Best Team Man – Chris Powell A4 Best Team Man – Dean Johnson-Boe B Reserve Coaches Award – Tyler Orwin A3 Coaches Award – Mitsuharu Nagayama A4 Coaches Award – Vaughn Evans

Special mention to Dean Johnson-Boe for coming runners up in the A4 Most

Valuable Player Award.

Summer Division 1

34 | P a g e

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Summer Division 1 Much like last year the Waverley Baseball Club Firsts were set to lose a number

of players to Aces duties. These losses however did not stop the First side from

coming out of the gates firing, winning the first four games of the season against

Springvale, Doncaster, Cheltenham and Blackburn. Unfortunately the team

then suffered a rough patch of six consecutive losses. This up and down

performance ended up being a telling sign for the remainder of the season.

The middle part of the season hurt the team significantly, but after only winning

one game in 12 (with one tie) starting with the last game of December the Firsts

were able to go on during the latter half of the season and win six straight, and

then went on to round out the season by winning seven of their last ten games,

a remarkable performance. Ultimately the Firsts finished up just under .500,

with a record of 12 Wins, 13 Losses and 1 Draw.

While the performance of the Firsts as a whole was not quite what the coaching

staff would have liked, the members of the Firsts continue to grow and develop

as baseball players and young men and this is a real pleasure to see and to be

involved with. Throughout the season there were many noteworthy individual

performances:

Five players represented the Aces throughout the year.

Jon Kennedy signed a professional contract with the Atlanta Braves.

Harvey Chinn, Jarryd Dale, Malachi Kere, Justin Burke and Chris Burke all made their debuts in the Firsts.

Congratulations to Mitch Hayes and Tyler Dale who were the joint Club Champions for the 2015/2016 season.

Mitch led the batting for the Wildcats and Tyler was the club’s workhorse on the mound.

Thanks are in order to the board for their support and to my coaching staff Dave

Clarkson and Kerry Gassner along with the many volunteers who helped the

Firsts throughout the year.

Looking towards the 2016/2017 season is an exciting prospect, the current

playing group’s maturity and skill continues to develop over the winter along

with previous players returning from abroad and upcoming talent from the

juniors the future looks bright for the Waverley Baseball Club Firsts.

Summer Division 1 Reserves

35 | P a g e

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Summer Division 1 Reserves The Waverley Baseball Club seconds were a young, enthusiastic and talented group of players who when at

full strength competed with the best teams in the competition. Unfortunately due to the players being required

to fill vacancies in the first nine and the difficult January representative period, where we contributed 20 plus

players and coaches to the Victorian program, the team lost several key games just before and after the

Christmas break, which led to us just missing the playoffs.

Throughout the season there were many noteworthy individual performances:

Congratulations to Harvey Chinn who was the MVP for the 2015/2016 season and Kayne Hillier who

displayed much improvement throughout the season, including some strong performances in the Firsts

and was given the Coach’s Award.

The State representatives who played the majority of their time in the second nine were: U18 Blue:

Matt Beattie; Justin Burke; Jordan Busch; Cooper Goodman; U18 White: Malachi Kere; U16 Blue:

Harvey Chinn; Blake Townsend; Jarryd Dale; U16 White: Chris Burke; Liam Evans.

Thanks to all who supported the team, our chief scorer Kelli, Head Coach Stuart Chinn and coaches, Dave

Clarkson, Kerry Gassner, and Neil Burke along with the many volunteers who helped throughout the year.

Looking towards next season the future is bright, but the players must take on the challenge to not only be

successful in reserve grade baseball, but to become a productive member of a premiership winning first nine.

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Summer Division 1 Thirds With Baseball Victoria reviewing its policy to allow 14 year olds to be able to play senior baseball for season

2015/2016, it enabled some extremely talented young players to enhance their playing opportunities and

become involved in Sunday afternoon senior baseball.

The majority of the team were involved in the Under 16 Wildcats and whilst rarely being challenged in that

competition, found the going much more difficult and experienced inconsistent results during the early part of

the season. However they no doubt learnt much about the game and the importance of competing. WBC will

no doubt benefit from our investment in these players.

Throughout the season there were many noteworthy individual performances:

Congratulations to Brian Smart who not only won the MVP for the 2015/16 season but also pitched a

No Hitter against Preston.

Kaioh Sato who was given the Coach’s Award. Kaioh is extremely dedicated and was a valuable two-

way player throughout the entire season.

The State representatives who played the majority of their time in the third nine were: U16 Blue: Kaioh Sato &

Mackenzie Salmon.

Thanks to all who supported the group, our veteran catcher Ryann Baxter who provided leadership, our team

of scorers led by Rob Smart and Steph Evans, Head Coach Frank Webb who displayed great patience, along

with the many volunteers who helped throughout the year.

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Summer Division 1 Fourths I would like to thank the club for asking me to coach such a great bunch of players, and boy there were a lot of

them!

By any measure having a season with a 10 win 7 loss record has to be considered to be successful. It would

be fair to say that the first 11 games where fantastic, the last 6 games where challenging to say the least. We

had 27 players make appearances for us this season which meant we were unable to put same team on the

field at any stage in the season. I particularly would like to thank all the players that filled in for 1-2 games.

Special thanks to Frank Webb and Grant Poke for managing the team when I was unable to. We also must

thank the Club members who umpired games when we had no official umpires.

Our wonderful scorer Chris Peacock, who would send stats for each game and season summary every Sunday

night. Chris has always been a wonderful part of all the teams he has been involved in.

Coaches Award, Tyler Orwin - The most amount of innings pitched did a great job particularly early in the

season, the highlight being a 5 innings shutout win at Newport. His personal battle with Brad over who batting

average was better was always funny!

Most Valuable Player, Corey Poke - Fantastic year – In tandem with Tyler pitched tirelessly and really is a

class above the Fourths level. He led the team in games played, hits and runs scored. It is always a pleasure

to have his smiling face among any group you play with.

Summer Division 4 East & North West

38 | P a g e

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Summer Division 4 East & North West It was a good season for the Fifths playing in the Division 4 East & North West League. The team was a good mix

of mostly junior players playing their first season of seniors, and a few older veterans. There was a bit of a rotation

policy between the two Division 4 teams early in the season, but towards the end of the season the team was very

settled and we ended up finishing in third position.

The core of the team was made up by the Under 18 Panthers side and it was commendable for these young guys to

come out and play a second game in the afternoon, given the tough games they would often have in the morning. A

big thumbs up to Daniel Yon, Tim Fielding and Judd Neilson playing their first season of Waverley senior baseball,

as well as Sammy Lemin and Daniel Crockett who both played the year before. You guys play the game with good

spirit and intensity, and it made coaching the team very easy.

A big thanks to Steve Brown for looking after the selections and availabilities of the young guys and making sure we

had a full team each week, and setting a good example for the lads. It was good fun having yourself and Magee

around for a few beers after the games too. Also thanks to Kempy and Naga for helping out with the coaching

where needed and adding a bit of experience to the team. Thanks to Andrew Crockett for scoring most of our

games as well.

We won our Semi Final in emphatic fashion, with a 15-10 win over the North West Titans playing in front of a fairly

hostile crowd out in Melton. 1 through 9 swung the bat well which was good to see. This set us up for a Grand

Final berth against what was effectively the Blackburn Masters side. It was a great match-up on the day, and some

great defence kept us in the game at 4-4 going into the last innings. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and we lost 5-4

walk off. Very proud of the way everyone in the team played. Victory was short-lived for Blackburn however, as our

very own Masters side defeated them in their own Grand Final the following evening. Cheers boys!

The Best Finals Player award was given to Tim Fielding for catching both Finals games in Kempy’s absence. He

did a fantastic job and it was good to see him step up for the good of the team. The Coaches Award has been

awarded to Pat Egan, playing back in his first season after over 10 years; he started slowly but hit his stride and was

a force with the bat for us in the second half of the season. Team MVP was awarded to Daniel Yon, batting leadoff

for the majority of the season and playing great defence, wherever he was positioned.

Overall a great season. I look forward to seeing the junior players up in the higher grades over the next few

seasons and wish you all luck in your future baseball careers. To the older guys in the team, I enjoyed the team

comradery and I’ll see you at the clubhouse bar soon.

Finally, farewell to the beloved ‘Chrispy’. It was a pleasure knowing you and you will be greatly missed, but forever

remembered around our clubhouse mate. Rest In Peace.

Summer Division 4 South

39 | P a g e

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Summer Division 4 South 2015/2016 season was one of challenge and success.

A total of 30 players participated in the team, 20 senior players and 10 junior players. At no stage did we forfeit a

game but on two occasions we played with 7 and 8 players respectively, most weeks we had 9 sometimes 11 so it

was a feast or famine situation, but for the efforts of the great Steve Brown and his many phone calls we survived

the season.

Our average winning margin from three games was 7 runs. Our average losing margin was 4.4 over 9 games so we

were a competitive team for most games but one when we were overwhelmed by an aggressive Melbourne team

going down 19 to 7.

The enthusiasm shown from all players was outstanding and there was a steady improvement shown throughout the

year.

At times the difference in our performance was reflected by level of junior player participation with senior players

setting a good example of sportsmanship on all but one occasion.

Summer Masters 45+

40 | P a g e

Waverley Baseball Club ● Annual Report 2016

Summer Masters 45+ Firstly, on a sad note we had to say farewell to one of our best clubman going around. To Chris Peacock we

say thank you for your passion and drive in pushing us to put a master’s team together. He was a part of our

very first masters team and was a hardworking servant of our club. We miss him dearly and are thinking of

him all the time. RIP Chrispy.

It was another fantastic year for the 45 plus master’s team with lots of fun and laughter which culminated in a

successful year for the guys.

Although we had a fair few injuries throughout the year and struggled to get our full team on the diamond, we

always ensured we enjoyed ourselves both on and off the field. It was great to welcome back Terry Fitzgerald

and Frank Webb to the Masters team along with a junior recruit in Stu McConnell. Unfortunately Stu suffered a

serious hamstring injury in his first at bat in his first game back after a number of years out of the game -

welcome back Stu and we look forward to seeing you back out on the park next year.

Although it was an injury riddled year we only lost two games for the season leaving us on top of the ladder at

the end of the home & away season. Our first final was against Melbourne who we beat in a thriller 4-2 with

Frank Webb stepping over the catcher in a dropped play at home putting the game out of reach for Melbourne.

This put us into the Grand Final where we played our friends from Blackburn for the second year in a row. We

went into the game pretty banged up with injuries - in total I think we had three knee injuries, two foot issues

and a back injury. In what was a high quality game where it was 0-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning we

finally strung some hits together and came out on top 5-0 (after 8 innings) to win back to back premierships.

Best finals player was a tough decision as every player did their bit but we though Frank Webb was

outstanding with his defensive efforts at shortstop in the Grand Final - I think he ended up with 16 defensive

plays out of a possible 24 outs which was amazing.

Our Coaches award this year was a little bit left field. This year we presented it to Denise Page for all the

things she does on a Monday night. Not only does she score, she also arranges all the dinners and

serves/cleans up after the boys (with some great help from Di Barry). It is a mighty effort and greatly

appreciated by all the master’s boys and the opposition teams.

The Masters MVP this year was awarded to John Makeham who had another outstanding season. Not only

does he play on Sundays, but he then backs it up and catches the whole game on a Monday night - he played

hurt for most of the year but was solid as a rock behind the dish and was our clutch hitter all year.

In closing I would like to thank the guys for all their support this year, a special thank you to Denise Page and

the finals.

A special mention also goes to the Papanicolaou family for organising and hosting the annual break up party

(just another excuse to get together)..it was another year of great memories and fun times.

10. Life Memberships Sue Montalto announced life membership nominations are now open from tonight, the 28th July at the AGM and will close on Tuesday 25th August @ 6:00pm. If any new life member nominations are received within this time, they will be reviewed by a select few from Club 3150 & if ratified by the board, if any successful nomination, they will be emailed / mailed out to all eligible voters, once the votes have been finalised, the new life members will be presented at the first Saturday Luncheon with Club 3150 in October (date to be confirmed as we are waiting on BV fixture schedules to be finalised.)

11. Sue Montalto asked for questions from the floor.

Neil Burke ran through the changes from Baseball Victoria regarding the new Junior Little League & Junior League Charter & Academy Structure for season 2015/2016. It was explained to members that it was a directive from Baseball Australia through to Baseball Victoria and then onto the clubs. The clubs did not at any stage have a chance to vote for or against the changes. Many clubs, especially the bigger clubs are not happy with the way it has been rolled out without clubs having any input. Unfortunately Baseball Victoria does not want a discussion on it, they just want the clubs to move forward and accept this is the new structure. However we are still waiting on BV to finalise which Charter we are in, so again this season, communication and lack of notification is holding internal process up. Rod Paton expressed his concerns with the changes, saying it will kill Club Baseball. Apart from losing the club playing tops which each clubs identifies themselves by, it’s the internal Club accolades and perpetual trophies that have been around for years, ”What happens to all of that?”. He stated that the Charter ie: Yarra Rangers do not have a club room or home grounds as such, and asked if the association (BV) will be paying for use of our club grounds & maintenance. As a life member that has put a lot of time & money over the years into Waverley Baseball Club alongside many other passionate Waverley Members, building the club up to what it is today, it saddens them greatly to think the Club identity is being taken away without the clubs having their say. “You wouldn’t go to the footy and start barracking for 3 or 4 teams or let Collingwood use the MCG for training!” Peter Flintoff & Robyn Karlsen also agreed with Rod, and many other attending members just shook their heads in disbelief. The question was asked, that they thought Baseball Australia and Baseball Victoria wanted to make the game more inclusive to all. By cutting out Club Representative teams & State programs they are lessoning & limiting the game time & options for players. It was agreed the club priority would be internally recruiting more junior players U8-U14’s to build on club numbers to eventually have enough players to be our own charter. Robyn Karlsen agreed to set up an internal recruitment committee to go to schools and gain more junior members to the club. Tony Page and Julie Wright, will assist with the recruitment drive with the assistance of other club members. There being no further questions or further business, Sue Montalto thanked all present for their attendance, support and service to the Club, wished them a successful season in 2015/2016 and closed the meeting. Meeting closed 9.03pm

Waverley Reds Annual Report 2015

The REDS has been established as a public profile for the Club (Waverley Baseball Club Inc.), and to run all Club fundraising and Promotional activities. Funds from the REDS are to be used for fundraising activities, expenses incurred in achieving those activities, supporting the Junior Program and to promote and expand the game of Baseball at Waverley. Members of the Waverley Baseball Club Inc. are automatically members of the Waverley REDS and the Board is appointed to the Waverley REDS Board by nomination at the Annual General Meetings held in conjunction with the WBC AGM. We are pleased to report a nett profit of $7,989.56 for the REDS in 2015. However this is a significant decrease on the previous year. The Waverley Reds Inc. transferred an amount from its reserves to the WBC this year of $10,000.00 to support the day to day operations. The bar has continued to operate efficiently and profitably, and special thanks must be extended to all those volunteers that helped make these areas successful. We also need to be diligent in the operation of the bar, and ensure that it is manned by Responsible Serving of Alcohol qualified people. Please refer to Financial Statements contained in this Annual Report.
