High Holy Day Schedule, Break-the-Fast Meal Volunteer Opportunities SJC’s High Holy Day schedule and
information about SJC’s Break-
the-Fast meal can be found on
pages 10 and 11. This information
can also be found on our website.
For the HHD schedule, go to the
Worship Tab. For information
about the Break-the-Fast meal, go
to About Us > Newsletter.
We need folks to help with set
up/take down of the ritual objects
in the sanctuary, blow Shofar, set
up/take down the Sukkah, and for a
variety of other activities. It does
take a village! See the HHD
schedule and other articles in this
newsletter for all the volunteer
activities and get involved! This is
a great way to meet other SJC
folks.
Sylvia Diehl SuCoat Drive During September and October, the
Community Service Committee is
sponsoring the Sylvia Diehl
SuCoat Drive to benefit the
Multicultural Center of Milford.
We are collecting gently used/clean
adult and children’s coats before
and after services on September 23
(Shabbat Shuva), October 6
(Sukkot and Pizza in the Hut), and
October 11 (Simchat Torah). The
coat drive is named in memory of
Sylvia Diehl, our dear member
who came up with the idea for the
drive, but who did not live to see it
come to fruition. It is named the
SuCoat Drive as a play on words
for Sukkot.
If you have any questions or wish
to donate a coat but cannot make it
to one of these events, please
contact Emily Eider, 610-781-4175
or [email protected], or
Lori Bernstein, 703-587-5985 or
Shabbat Shuva & Potluck Lunch Sep 23 The Sabbath in between Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur is
called Shabbat Shuva, the Sabbath
of Return. We use this time for
celebrating Shabbat and
contemplating about the upcoming
Yom Kippur holy day. Our
Shabbat Shuva worship service
will be led by Rabbi Simcha Daniel
Burstyn, our High Holy Day
service co-leader, and will be on
Saturday morning, September 23,
at 10 a.m., at the SJC building. It
will be followed by a potluck
dairy/parve lunch. It would be
good if we had some lactose free
dishes. When you decide what dish
you want to bring, please contact
Anita Smulyan so she can
coordinate the menu. Contact Anita
at 302-703-2900 or
[email protected]. Please
also remember to bring your
donations of gently used coats for
the Sylvia Diel SuCoat Drive.
Parking at SJC A strip of hard asphalt has been
added to the lot, close to the
building, for the benefit of those
who are uncomfortable walking on
gravel. Two handicapped parking
spaces have also been established,
one close to the SJC entrance and
one close to the elevator.
We are requesting that you park on
the hard asphalt strip only if you
have difficulty walking on the
gravel. That way, the strip is
available for those who need the
firmer surface to walk safely.

Co-President’s Message - Buddy Feldman
Our High Holy Day season begins
this month. We are very pleased
that for the eighth year, Rabbi
Simcha Daniel Burstyn will be
assisting our Rabbi Beth in
leading our worship services. I am
always overwhelmed with a sense
of joy and gratitude as we fill the
Epworth United Methodist
Church’s sanctuary nearly to
capacity.
I know that Seaside’s mission is
being fulfilled as we welcome our
members and so many guests for
our High Holy Day services. We
are open to everyone and want
them to feel comfortable in a
worship service that embraces the
whole range of Jewish traditions.
As part of our prayers, we
acknowledge that charity is
essential in renewing our desire
for a good life. I hope that, when
you hear these stirring words,
you’ll consider Seaside in your
charitable donations.
My wife, Marilyn, and I, and Co-
President Mike Saltzman and his
wife Fran, and all our Board
members wish you and your loved
ones a Happy and Healthy New
Year.

Annual Meeting Rescheduled for Dec 3 The Board of Directors has
rescheduled the Annual
Membership Meeting to Sunday,
December 3, at 9 a.m., at the SJC
building. Please make a note of
this change in your calendar from
the previously scheduled date of
November 5.
At the meeting, 3 members of the
9-member Board will be elected.
Due to the change in the meeting
date, the nomination period for the
3 Board positions will now remain
open until October 3.
Also at the meeting, the Religious
Leader Transition Committee will
report on its search for a
replacement for Rabbi Beth, who
is retiring. The meeting will
provide an opportunity for
members to learn about this
ongoing process.
Nominees for the Board must be
SJC members in good standing. If
you are interested or know of
anyone who would be willing to
serve, please contact SJC’s
Nominating Committee Chair,
Hank Smith, at 302-644-1581 or
[email protected]. Before
making a nomination, please be
sure the individual you are
nominating is willing to serve. The
election will be held at the annual
meeting, and the term begins one
month after the annual meeting.
Duties of Board members include
attendance at monthly Board
meetings, open/close the building
for services, attendance at Shabbat
and holiday services as often as
possible, chair or serve on a
committee, and in general, be
active in SJC activities.

Sponsor an Oneg/Kiddush Thank you to everyone who
brought a special dessert for our
Friday night potluck event on
August 11. Special thanks to those
who helped in the kitchen before
services and cleaning up after
services.
We are seeking sponsors for
September 16, October 11
(Simchat Torah) and 21,
November 3 and 18, December 1
and 16. Dates are also available
for 2018. It’s very easy to set up
the kitchen for your snacks and
food. Someone is always there to
give a hand. To volunteer, please
contact Irene Ullmann at 302-947-
9123 or [email protected].
Social Committee Notes A hearty thanks to Brina Krupp
for her service as co-chair of the
committee for the last several
years. She is now stepping down
as co-chair. Brina was
instrumental in arranging our
January Opening Dinners and the
ladies’ lunches, as well as being a
sounding board for all our events.
The ever-popular congregational
Shabbat dinners will continue
under new, but experienced
leadership. We also have some
novel ideas to jazz up a few of our
established events. A couple of
exciting events are in the works as
well. Watch this space after the
High Holy Days!
Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an
SJC event but thought you couldn't
afford it? SJC policy is to work with
you if you have a financial hardship.
Please contact the treasurer to
confidentially discuss your situation.
Divine Tasting Fundraiser Sep 23 Join with friends from SJC and
other faith communities and
organizations in the Cape
Henlopen area for a wonderful
evening of great wines, beer, and
heavy hors d’oeuvres (catered by
Palate), along with a silent auction
to help raise funds for the
Community Resource Center. The
event is being held at St. Jude’s
Catholic Church, just north of 5
Points in Lewes, on Saturday,
September 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. It
is for those 21 and over. The cost
is $60 per person. Reservations
should be made online at
divinetasting.eventbrite.com.
Created in 2011, CRC serves as a
centralized location to help meet
the needs of Eastern Sussex
County residents facing crisis. The
center, on Oyster House Road in
Rehoboth Beach, is staffed by
over 40 highly trained volunteers,
whose tireless efforts work to
make its mission a success. It is a
non-profit agency whose purpose
is to assess the needs of
individuals and families, identify
and coordinate the use of
community resources, support
individuals and families for a short
period of time, provide financial
assistance based on need, and
create partnerships in the
community. SJC has supported the
work of the CRC with volunteers
and an annual contribution since
its creation.

Peace Week Starts Sep 16 Several local faith communities,
including SJC, are participating in
Peace Week Delaware, a state-
wide weeklong series of events
promoting peace around the
world. Significantly, our local
coalition decided to hold all events
before Rosh Hashanah, which
starts on September 20, even
though, state-wide, the events go
through September 24.
Join us for a rally and march for
peace on Saturday, September 16,
3 p.m., at the Lewes Canal Front
Park. As part of the rally, there
will be short speeches by local
clergy, including out Rabbi Beth.
Other events include:
Sept 17-24 Peace Week displays
in Lewes Public Library.
Sept 17 Special Peace Week
Service at Unitarian
Universalists of Southern
Delaware (UUSD), Route 9,
Lewes, 10 a.m.
Sept 18 Film and Discussion,
Do the Right Thing, UUSD,
7 p.m.
Sept 19 Justice and Activism
101 Workshop at Metropolitan
Community Church, Plantation
Road, 6:30 p.m.
Security During the HHDs As we did last year, an off-duty
Delaware State police officer will
be stationed at Epworth United
Methodist Church during our High
Holy Day services there. If you
have any questions, comments, or
concerns, please contact our
House Committee chair, Matthew
Ash, at 301-404-1471 or
Kugels & Desserts Needed For Break-the-Fast It’s not too late to volunteer to
make kugels and desserts, such as
brownies or cookies, for our
congregational Break-the-Fast
meal. We need dairy or parve
kugels made in 8”x11" disposable
aluminum pans. We also need
dairy or parve desserts, homemade
or store bought, as our caterer is
not providing desserts this year so
that we could keep our meal price
the same as last year. If you want
to volunteer, we need to hear from
you by September 23. Please
contact Anita Smulyan about
making kugels at 302-703-2900 or
[email protected]; and
contact Dill Patz at 302-537-4368
or [email protected] with your
dessert contributions. Please do
not bring any kugels or desserts to
the Break-the-Fast without
contacting Anita or Dill by that
date. Any other questions contact
Anita.
HHD Youth Services/Activities: Volunteers Needed Activities and services for young
people on Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur mornings begin at 10
a.m. Two programs are available.
One is a service for those who are
old enough to participate (usually
9 and older), and the other is an
activity program with stories and
arts and crafts for our younger
folks. An adult family member
must accompany children under 5.
All the young people will come
into the sanctuary and sit as a
group for the taking out and
reading of the Torah. After the
Torah is read, they will join their
families in the sanctuary for the
remainder of the service.
Snacks will be provided for the
children on Rosh Hashanah, but
for the Yom Kippur program,
parents will need to provide their
children’s snacks.
The Youth Education Committee
is in search of a few volunteers to
help with both programs. For more
information and to volunteer,
please contact Marjorie Kobrin at
914-419-2972 or
Sukkot & Pizza in the Hut Oct 6 Pizza in the Hut will be celebrated
on Friday night, October 6. All
members and their families are
invited for a pizza and salad
dinner in our Sukkah starting at
5:30 p.m. Services will follow at
6:30 p.m., not our usual 7:30.
Please make a note of these earlier
times. During services, new
members who have joined Seaside
since this past May’s New
Member Shabbat will be
welcomed. The Membership
Committee hopes to see you at the
event. Let’s fill the Sukkah with
joy and camaraderie.
Simchat Torah Oct 11 On Wednesday, October 11, at 7
p.m., SJC will celebrate Simchat
Torah with a festival service,
including Yizkor. As part of the
celebration we will read from the
very end and beginning of the
scroll. In between the readings, the
entire scroll is unrolled and
rerolled with all participants
holding it, dancing and singing. It
is always an amazing experience!

Adult Education Schedule is Changing! The Adult Education Committee
has decided to adopt a more
flexible programming schedule,
allowing for variable dates and
meeting times of its classes and
events. Starting October 1, there
will no longer be regular Thursday
evening programs, although there
will be a Jewish History class on
the first Thursday of October, and
the Mussar study group will
continue to meet on the second
Thursday through the end of this
year. Please always check the
newsletter and the SJC web
calendar for our programs, which
may be offered during the day,
evenings, as well as on Sunday
afternoons. The committee is
anxious to incorporate your ideas
into our programming. Contact
Marsha Davis at 717-554-1244 or
[email protected] if you
are interested in preparing and
leading a program.
Jewish History On September 7, 7:30 p.m. at SJC,
the Essential Lectures in Jewish
History series continues with the
videos, "Modern American Jewish
History” and “How to Talk Like a
Mensch.” In previous videos, we
learned that Jewish history and
Jewish culture are inseparable.
The first video this month
addresses how modern day Jewish
identity is endangered due to
continued and accelerating
assimilation into American
society. The second video is a
short follow up segment that
shows how love of learning and
education is essential to that
Jewish identity. We will also have
a video on October 5. Come for an
enjoyable evening meeting with
your friends, discussing what you
have heard and of course, enjoying
some after-dinner snacks as well.
A Taste of Mussar Each month through December
2017, on the second Thursday of
the month, 7:30 p.m., at SJC, we
study one virtue or soul/character
trait (middah) that is part of
Mussar, a spiritual discipline
within Judaism. On September 14,
we will focus on Chapter 19,
Moderation – Shevil Ha’zahov,
and on October 12, our trait will
be Loving-Kindness – Chesed,
Chapter 20. These are chapters in
our text, Everyday Holiness by
Alan Morinis. Those who wish to
participate in the group discussion
must read the chapters in advance.
The goal of Mussar, is to assist us
in deepening our awareness of self
through the spiritual and
contemplative practice of
studying, experiencing, and
sharing our experiences with
middot. Mussar is not meant to be
intellectual. Rather, it is a spiritual
study, a way to explore our
spiritual selves, discovering who
we are and discussing our specific
experiences related to the selected
middah.
Speakers Wanted! Have an interest in a topic with a
Jewish connection? Want to present
that topic as an Adult Education
program? We need you!
Adult Ed programs are generally on
Thursday nights, but could be at other
times. They are informal in nature.
To volunteer or recommend someone
who might like to speak, contact
Marsha Davis, 717-554-1244,
Healthcare in Our Community On October 26, 7:30 p.m., at SJC,
Jeff Fried, SJC member and CEO
and President of Beebe
Healthcare, will discuss the
recently unveiled plan to enhance
Beebe’s ability to serve our
community’s medical needs,
particularly that of its aging
population. Proposed federal
changes to healthcare
administration have made this a
particularly difficult task, given
the cost of newer diagnostic tests
and the need for hospital
expansion. Beebe’s plan includes
expanding to 240 beds and adding
a new surgical inpatient unit on
the primary Beebe Campus in
Lewes. In addition, Beebe is
planning a second Tunnell Cancer
Center and a free-standing
emergency department on its
Millville by the Sea campus.
Come hear Jeff discuss dynamic
changes in medical care taking
place in our community that
impact all of us.
Book Talk on Kindertransport On Tuesday, November 7, 7 p.m.,
at SJC, there will be a Book Talk
presented by SJC member and
retired professional historian,
David Herschler, and Holocaust
Survivor, Ralph Mollerick. The
presentation will focus on David’s
recently published book,
Kindertransport: A Lifelong
Journey of Survival and
Redemption. A discussion and
book signing will follow their
presentation.
The book is the story of eight-
year-old Ralph’s escape from Nazi
Germany on the Kindertransport
(a program that saved nearly
10,000 children from perishing in

Religious School News SJC is excited for the beginning of
another great school year starting
on Sunday, September 10. Joel
Simon is the religious school
director, and along with David
Kobrin, will continue to work with
Oliver Sachs and David Hawtof
who both have November bar
mitzvah celebrations. And, Mazel
Tov to Noa Aboutboul, who was
called to the Torah on August 26
for her bat mitzvah.
This year, we have 5 classes with
a wonderful staff. The Hey class
will be taught by David Kobrin,
Todd Hacker, and Emily Freid. As
our oldest class, they will be
enhancing their Hebrew by
studying Exodus through
Deuteronomy. The class will focus
on Jewish history over the past
150 years, and will engage in
Judaism's greatest debates. The
Dalet class will be taught by Joel
Simon, Evey Herschler, and
Marissa Hawtof. This class will
study Hebrew through learning the
Torah service. They will learn
Jewish history from ancient times
up through the mid-19th century,
study the Holocaust, and learn
what it means to be a mensch. The
Gimmel class will be taught by
Alyssa Simon, David Udoff, and
Ethan Simon. They will study
Hebrew through the Shema and
the Friday night Shabbat service.
They will focus on learning
lessons from the Torah, Jewish
holidays, and Jewish rituals. The
Bet class will be taught by
Marjorie Kobrin, Isabella Sachs,
and Emily Simon. This class will
continue their study of letters and
focus on learning about holidays,
the synagogue, and mitzvot. The
Alef class, our youngest group,
will be taught by Narda Namrow,
Rachel Namrow, and Josh
Conway. The class will learn
Hebrew letters and discover God,
the Bible, and Shabbat.
As you can see, we have a lot
planned for this year. In addition
to our usual holiday celebrations,
we will be taking a field trip in the
spring. Also, there will be weekly
specials including Jeff Hawtof
(music), Wendy Kessler (art), and
Anita Smulyan and Bea Horn
(cooking). On days without a
weekly special, the students lead
their own youth service.
Registration for religious school is
still open. If any children ages 5
through 13 are interested in
joining the religious school,
families should contact Joel Simon
at 302-245-1386 or
Preschool Holiday Course SJC is offering a holiday course
for 3- and 4-year-olds and their
parents. There will be six classes
covering major holidays and
Shabbat through story, music, and
crafts. The cost is $75 per family
for members and $90 for non-
members. Bring your check to the
first class. The classes will be on
Sunday mornings at SJC from
10:00 to 10:45. If you are
interested, contact Marjorie
Kobrin at 914-419-2972 or

A Program for Teens Give your child or grandchild the
opportunity to live Jewish history.
For thirty years, Jewish teens from
all over the world have gathered to
relive the recent history of our
people via the March of the Living
program. This program brings
teenagers and young adults
together to share an experience
that is only talked about in
classrooms. They experience Yom
HaShoah in Poland visiting
concentration camps and then fly
to Israel to celebrate Yom
Ha’Atzmaut. This year is unique
in the celebration of significant
anniversaries.
March of the Living will celebrate
Israel's 70th Birthday and The
March's 30th Anniversary on April
12, 2018 in Poland and on April
19 in Jerusalem.
These two weeks in your child’s
life will remain with them always.
Friends made across the world
will enrich connections for a
lifetime. Visit the website
www.MOTL.org and learn more
about this program. Financial
subsidies are available.

Children’s Books Library Parents and Grandparents: We
encourage you to browse through
our collection of books about
Bible Heroes, holidays, Israel, and
Jewish values. The books are on
SJC’s lower floor. We have
relevant, beautifully illustrated
books appropriate for preschoolers
on up. The books are organized by
topic: Hebrew, Bible Stories,
Holidays, Shabbat, Chanukah, and
Pesach. Picture books include
sensitively written books on the
Holocaust, dealing with death,
kindness, and performing mitzvot.
Borrow them to enjoy at home. A
checkout form is placed above the
library shelves. Just sign out the
books and return them after you
read them. We hope you will
check them out for no more than
three weeks at a time.
Book Review The Adult Education Committee
recommends The People and the
Books by Adam Kirsch. Eighteen
classic Jewish texts and peoples
are denoted, by The New York
Times, as “an essential literary
tradition from the Bible to modern
times.” This is a book to keep by
the bedside and dipped into, or on
an easily accessible bookshelf, and
read with a Bible by your side for
reference. Richly written by a
noted scholar, it is a wonderful
read. Questions and comments
may be addressed to Miriam

Folks may enjoy the presentation
more if they have the opportunity

between 9 and 10 a.m. to

Don’t forget to bring the book to

Shabbat-B-Que A Delight! Our annual Shabbat-B-Que was
held on August 19 with over 50
people in attendance. Rabbi Beth
led a lovely and meaningful
service. And then, due to the
wonderful weather, we ate and
schmoozed outside! This event is
sponsored by the Membership
Committee in appreciation of and
as a thank you to our members. It
is you, our members, who make
our synagogue into a community.
Thanks to the committee for their
assistance in making this event a
success. And thanks to our
members for joining and being a
part of SJC.
Wednesday Mornings at Seaside
Every Wednesday. 9 to 10:30 a.m.,
you’ll find the SJC doors open for
those interested in a contemplative,
spiritual, peace-filled start to their day.
Meditation, chant, and prayer are
included. Everyone, including folks
wanting to learn the practice of
meditation, is welcome.

Helping Hands SJC offers support to members who
are ill, grieving, homebound, or just
need a helping hand. Available
support includes sending cards,
visiting people at home, preparing and
delivering meals, picking up groceries
and prescriptions, small repairs around
the house, and running errands. New
Helping Hand team members are
welcome. Contact Anita Smulyan at
302-703-2900.
Be a Good Samaritan! We at SJC have another
opportunity to work with Epworth
United Methodist Church; this
time on their Good Samaritan
Program. This program provides
emergency relief in the form of
providing food and other
emergency needs for people in
distress or for people who do not
have enough of their own
resources to meet their basic
needs. The program operates 5
days a week, 3 hours per day.
Volunteers are needed to sit at a
reception desk to greet people
coming into the church in need of
help. Volunteers are asked to give
2 three-hour shifts per month.
There will be an intensive training
program to help volunteers feel
comfortable. Good listening skills
are important. There will always
be another person in the building
with the volunteer.
If you are interested in finding out
more about this program, please
contact Anita Smulyan at
302-703-2900. An information
and orientation meeting will be
held sometime in early October.
