    This style stretches to fit closely. Choose a size to fit about 1 smaller

    than the childs head measurement.

    Pattern is written for smaller size, with changes for larger sizes in ().

    PATTERN DIFFICULTY: EASY

    STITCH KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:sc (single crochet), dc (double crochet), sl st (slip stitch), ch (chain)

    working in a spiral round

    working to gauge

    MATERIALS LIST:

    1 (1, 2, 2) balls of your color of choice of cotton worsted weight yarn

    Peaches n Crme Yarn used for the sample.

    U.S.-7 (4.5mm) Hook, or hook needed for gauge

    OTHER ITEMS NEEDED:

    Scissors, for clipping yarn

    Tapestry Needle to weave in ends

    Marker for tracking rounds

    GAUGE:

    With U.S. 7 hook: 1st

    3 rounds of hat = 3.5 in diameter. Please take time to

    check gauge! I tend to crochet a little loosely, for reference. You may need a

    different size hook.

    TIPS:

    Do NOT join rounds unless expressly stated to do so. Hat is worked in a

    spiral until last few rounds.

    Do not turn after rounds on the hat.

    Mark the start of each round as you work, so as not to lose your place, if

    necessary.

    HAT:Starting out: With hook needed for gauge andyarn, ch 4.

    Rnd 1: Work12 dc in4th ch from hook. (12 dc, ignoring ch-3 at

    beginning)

    Rnd 2: Work 1 sc in SIDE of beginning ch-3. Work 2 dc in each dc around.(24 dc, ignore sc made)

    Rnd 3: Work (1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) around. (36 dc)

    Work for XSMALL SIZE ONLY:

    Rnd 4: Work (1 dc in next 5 st, 2 dc in next st) around. (42 dc)

    Work for SMALL, MEDIUM AND LARGE SIZES ONLY:

    Rnd 4: Work (1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. (48 dc)

    Work for MEDIUM SIZE ONLY:

    Rnd 5: Work (1 dc in next 7 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. (54 dc)

    Work for LARGE SIZE ONLY:

    Rnd 5: Work (1 dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. (60 dc)

    Continue for ALL SIZES:

    Rnd 5-9 (5-10, 6-11, 6-12): Work 1 dc around. ON LAST ROUND ONLY,

    in last 3 stitches, work hdc, sc, sl st. (42, (48, 54, 60) sc)

    Rnd 10-11 (11-12, 12-13, 13-14): Ch 1. Work 1 sc around. After last round,

    join with sl st in first sc and finish off.(42, (48, 54, 60) sc)
