audit of our commercial and technical position in
the market for seamers, a market segment where
we used to be world leaders.”
Turning things aroundThis market research provided a lot of information
about the position of PneumaticScaleAngelus in
the market for seamers. The outcome was not
positive.
“The conclusion was that we were consider-
ably behind our strongest competitor and that we
had to act quickly,” notes Lauwers. “In order to
respond to the actual demands in our market we
started to talk intensively with some of our leading
customers. We involved some big food and bev-
erage can fillers, some of the major can makers,
along with the most important suppliers of filling
equipment. All these partners were eager to work
with us in the development of our new generation
of seamers and they gave us practical and valu-
able advice.”
The company’s guiding principles in the devel-
opment of new seamers are: safety, reliability,
hygiene, flexibility and sustainability.
“From a technical viewpoint we incorporated
the latest novelties into the new machines. One
of the most important focuses in our new seamer
development is to reach high line efficiencies,”
Lauwers states.
“Not all filling lines in customer plants are dedi-
cated to one single can size and now and then
lines have to be changed to other can sizes. To
change somewhat older can seamers to another
can size can take hours. What we have done is
construct all the parts that have to be changed
on one plate.
Now it is only a question of taking the plate in
the seamer out and putting the plate for the other
can size in. We made the new seamer as modular
as possible to enable a quick changeover. You
can now change the new 8M seamer, a high-
speed seamer for beverage cans, in less than two
hours to another can size. This is a completely new
feature in can seamers and none of our competi-
tors are offering this. Another feature which
we focused on in our new seamers is con-
siderable noise reduction.”
Future developmentsPneumaticScaleAngelus wanted to have
new can seamers in its product lines that
are able to cope with any future develop-
ments.
“With some of the leading can makers
we will make an agreement to develop
together seamers for future lightweight food
and beverage cans and ends. This means
that we must be able to seam ever more
downgauged cans and ends made from
thinner but also harder metals,” adds Lauwers.
“This puts heavy demands on seamers, among
others as a consequence of higher temperatures
in the seamers by increased friction heat. After a
lot of brainstorming we found an important solu-
tion to tackle this problem. By applying a clever oil
cooling system we succeeded in keeping essen-
tial parts of the seamers at constant temperatures
between 80 and 90ºC. Previously the tempera-
tures sometimes went up to more than 135ºC in
unfavourable conditions.”
This means that the formation of a thick film of
sugar from soft drinks or gravy used in pet foods on
the seamers is generally avoided.
“With this oil cooling advantage we believe
that we will help our customers with their sus-
tainability programs. They will need less water
and detergents. Less oil changes will be another
advantage. Lower temperatures of the seaming
rolls will avoid high-end compound temperature
and less compound squeezing. Altogether this is a
really big step forward.”
The 12 M seamer with 12 spindles is capable of
seaming 1,800 cans per minute.
“We are beyond the phase of prototypes with
our new seamers. Some of these new machines
are running successfully in the US. The first machines
are being sold in Europe and will start to run in the
middle of 2011.
“I think we can say with confidence that we are
in a much better market position with our seamers
than some years ago and customers will profit
from that,” concludes Lauwers. ❑

Properly managing can handling and conveying is
becoming increasingly important to the manufac-
turing process.
Nick Bottinelli, Latin America sales manager at Ashworth
Bros, believes great strides have been made in this area.
“Can handling not only impacts spoilage rates but can
quality as well,” he comments. “Some methods of convey-
ance are extremely efficient but cause many quality prob-
lems. For example, the mass air tables that became popu-
lar in the early 1990s were extremely efficient at eliminating
gaps in the line. However, the high-speed collisions caused
many dings which the fillers no longer accept. Likewise,
working with the can makers and the original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) on washer and oven conveyance
has improved spoilage rates and can quality.
“Keeping cans stable during the process and at trans-
fers reduces spoilage. Also, developing hold-down mat
materials and hanging systems has reduced can damage.
Undertstanding and mitigating galvanic interactions in the
washer, especially with trim and sleek cans, has helped
reduce the amount of split flanges.”
Belts for cansAshworth continues to lead the market with the most con-
veyor belt patents in the food processing, can making and
material handling industries.
The company has been supplying conveyor belting to a
number of can makers around the world for decades. The
belts are primarily used in two-piece can plants.
“We are the world’s leading supplier of conveyor belt-
ing and hold-down mats for can washers,” adds Bottinelli.
“We also recently released ToughMat, a new family of PTFE
coated fibreglass and Kevlar mats for IBO/OBO and dry-off
ovens to meet our customers’ demands.”
For mass conveyance modular plastic mats are com-
monly used. Ashwoth focuses on conveyance through the
actual can making equipment such as can washers and
IBO/OBO and dry-off ovens.
The company offers a variety of different mats depend-
ing on a customer’s requirements.
“People choose Ashworth because our belts have
shown to provide longer life. As with anything, there are
many variables affecting product life such as application,
belt speed, washer chemistry formulation etc. But we’ve
had several customers comment on the longevity of our
belts and this is why customers continually use Ashworth
belts.
Spiralling under controlSo what is the next step forward for conveyance within the
metal packaging sector?
Bottinelli believes the future lies in spiral belts. “In certain
countries, spiral elevators and accumulators have been
successfully used for more than 10 years, but these spirals
were engineered and designed by spiral experts,” he
explains. “In other countries, where spirals have not taken
off and gained a bad reputation we have found it was
because the spirals were not designed properly and were
never able to work right. Ashworth invented the concept
of spirals in 1967 and successfully changed the way food is
frozen and bakery products are cooled.
“We feel there is a significant market opportunity for
spirals in the can making industry as it can eliminate
accumulation tables that take up valuable floor space.
Additionally, energy efficient spiral elevators can replace
vacuum elevators, thus reducing energy usage, plant
noise and the use of de-misters. We are working with sev-
eral companies to expand the use of spirals in the can
making industry.”
The company’s conveyor belts can be seen operating
at a wide variety of speeds.
“In can washers and ovens, the speed is usually slower
due to the process requirements,” notes Bottinelli. “Fifteen
to 20 feet per minute is most common, although a few
smaller washers have been ramped up to approxiamately
45 feet/min.
“Ashworth isn’t after every single belt and mat in a can
plant. The company focuses exclusively on the process
belts/mats, including spirals. The engineering required to
shepherd a package through a washing or IC curing proc-
ess is totally unique and much more complex than simply
conveying a product from one machine to the next. This is
where Ashworth excels.”

Techno ItalyTechno Italy is a provider of automatic machines for
the can making industry. Impress, Crown, Massilly
Group, Vogel & Noot, Royal Can, Swan Industries,
ORG, Lolo and CPMC are just some of the can mak-
ers who have called upon the Italian company’s
services.
“We have different customers depending on
the kind of project that we are handling. For end
transportation and packaging in the can making
industry, we have many can makers in Europe and
Asia,” says president Giacomo Borra.
The company provides a range of equipment
for the industry including electrocoaters for end
post repair, plastic wrapping machines for ends,
minibuffers for balancing end presses and unwrap-
pers for plastic wrapped ends.
“In several cases we have been asked to pro-
duce palletisers/depalletisers that other companies
would not have made, because the demanded
performances were out of their standard range,”
notes Borra.
Carrying cansTechno Italy’s conveyor belts are used to carry both
two and three-piece cans.
“In many applications the use of mesh belt con-
veyors (belts), which are popular in two-piece can
applications, has found convenient application in
some sections of three-piece can making lines as
well as in filling plants,” Borra says. “The shelf life of
the mesh belt conveyors that come into contact
with three-piece cans is much lower due to a
heavier load and, in particular, to the presence of
many steel particles that form an abrasive paste
along sliding tracks.”
The lasting period of belts generally depends on
the kind of application and maintenance/cleaning
procedures.
“For end transport we have rarely been informed
about worn or damaged belts. In heavier applica-
tions, like skeleton evacuation or can body eleva-
tors, six to 12 months is generally a good perform-
ance for a belt,” he adds.
Borra believes that more attention should be paid
to this part of the can making process. “All custom-
ers should pay the highest attention to conveyance
because a wrong design can dramatically affect
the line efficiency and performance in general.
When you think about an assembly chain, the key
point is the smooth flow of the product through its
operative stations.
“The majority of our products go to can mak-
ing plants, more often in the end making depart-
ment. Can makers should pay more attention to
the primary importance that a good transporta-
tion project has on their plant. Conveyors for
automation are exactly what the Internet is for
communication. Nothing better, nothing faster,” he
concludes. ❑

The latest statistics from BCME (Beverage Can Makers Europe) show that despite tougheconomic conditions last year, there was strong growth in the beverage can market in Europe
News Focus
In 2010, the European beverage can market hit 54.1 bil-
lion cans, up 5.2 per cent from 2009. The UK market fared
particuarly well and reached an important milestone in
2010, passing the nine billion can mark, up seven per cent
on 2009.
The UK soft drinks market increased by 12.3 per cent on
2009 and the dynamism of the sector is shown by the fact
that shipments have increased by one billion in two years.
In 2010, soft drinks represented over 50 per cent of all drinks
can shipments for the first time since 2002.
Within the overall soft drinks market, carbonated soft
drinks (CSDs) outperformed other soft drinks in 2010 with
fruit carbonates up nine per cent and cola up eight per
cent. From a small base, energy drinks and sports drinks
showed the biggest growth with increases of 18 and 10 per
cent respectively.
Growth in the soft drinks category was shown across
Europe, with figures up 7.5 per cent year on year, with 26.4
billion cans shipped. Beer market growth was 3.2 per cent
or a total of 27.7 billion cans shipped. The main regional
drivers for soft drinks growth were Austria, UK, Scandinavia,
Germany and Turkey, whilst Scandinavia, France and
Germany pushed beer market growth. New filling lines in
France and Scandinavia also contributed to the strong
growth figures, whilst the energy drinks market continues to
expand rapidly across Europe.
Commenting on the new statistics, BCME marketing
committee chairman Caroline Archer, said: “2010 was a
difficult year for many with decreased consumer spending
and heightened economic tension. However, the bever-
age can market was one of the success stories. Major
brands continue to push the can as a key part of their
pack mix and the use of slim and sleek cans has increased
markedly. As predicted, the World Cup had a strong posi-
tive influence on beverage can consumption, particularly
for beer cans as they are convenient for consumers when
socialising at home with friends.”
Focusing on the UKAlcohol in cans in the UK is primarily beer and
cider, with a small but growing wine sector.
In 2010 the volume of cans shipped
increased to 4.5 billion, up 91 million over
2009.
At-home drinking has helped drive this
growth as the long-term trend favouring take
home beer over consumption in pubs has
increased during the recession. Cider, with its
strong appeal to young people, has been the
best performing sector of the market with the
volume of cider sold in cans up nine per cent
year on year.
Cans had a 67 per cent pack share for
beer and cider in 2010 and in the four weeks
leading up to the Christmas period they took
market share from glass bottles. Multipacks
continue to be the main sales tool, with 12’s
the fastest growing pack size and 4’s and 15’s
the most popular.
Domestic consumption also drove growth in Germany,
with consumption growing by around 300 million cans, a 46
per cent increase on 2009. This has, in no small part, been
driven by the re-listing of cans in two major supermarket
chains, highlighting widespread consumer acceptance of
the beverage can.
“Beverage cans offer fillers, retailers and consumers
benefits such as convenience, supply chain efficiency and
outstanding product integrity. Cans are uniquely sustain-
able, being made from metals that are permanent mate-
rials so they are 100 per cent recyclable and the metal
can be recycled indefinitely to create new products.
Using recycled aluminium to make new products saves
95 per cent of the energy associated with the produc-
tion of virgin metal and for steel the equivalent figure is 75
per cent. It is important to note that the beverage can is
the most recycled drinks pack in the world,” adds Archer.
“Through infrastructure improvements and initiatives to
improve consumer recycling behaviour, BCME is com-
mitted to supporting further increases in recycling rates
throughout Europe.” ❑

Why measure colour? To the world’s leading beverage makers, the
precise, trademarked colours and patterns on
their containers are their brand’s identity. Such are the
consistent graphics that consumers recognise and reach
for them. Moreover, today’s cans are decorated with
increasingly vibrant colours and dazzling patterns to com-
pete for the eye at retail.
Heightened standardsAs can makers are aware, colour and graphics variations
violate brand identity standards. At store level, anomalous-
looking containers critically impact shoppers’ purchasing
decisions and brand perception. Accordingly, top-brand
beverage makers are tending to require 100 per cent
colour consistency, with the rest of the industry likely to
follow.
Containers rejected and/or held for inspection (HFI) due
to colour nonconformity and decoration defects are a
significant cost concern for can makers. Highly complex
graphics and exacting requirements now heighten the
risks.
Global considerationsAchieving absolute colour conformity across billions of
cans is a difficult prospect. Manufacturing them in multiple
global locations adds to the challenge. Although can dec-
oration technology has never been more sophisticated
and precise, a host of conditions can adversely affect the
process at any time, in any plant location in the world.
To ensure 100 per cent colour consistency on beverage
cans, precise colour measurement must be achieved by a
method that is reliable and easy to implement in manufac-
turing operations. This paper examines the methods devised
and used over recent decades to ensure colour conform-
ity, culminating in colorimetric technology, its nature,
advantages and limitations, and current
availability to can manufacturers. As
marketers compete for the consumer’s
attention, can colours and decorations
are becoming increasingly vivid
and intricate.
Methods of colour measurementEnsuring colour consistency requires a precise tool for
measuring colour.
In the case of beverage cans (including today’s alumini-
um bottles), that tool must measure colour on highly reflec-
tive, cylindrical-shaped surfaces, reliably and accurately.
Ideally, that tool should also be able to register patterns,
interpret process colours and, based on a holistic view of
the container, make simultaneous measurements in multi-
ple regions of interest. In real-world applications the tool
would also need to perform its functions on cans moving
at line speed and randomly oriented.
After exploring and implementing colorimetric (col-
our measurement) inspection for 30 years, researchers
at Applied Vision Corporation are keenly aware of the
capacity and limitations of the human eye, and expert
in spectrophotometry and
machine vision for con-
tainer decoration colour
measurement.

Colorimetric Technology
The human eyeSince their implementation decades ago, human inspec-
tors have continually proven unsuccessful at ensuring
decoration consistency and colour accuracy in beverage
can making operations. The reasons range from physiologi-
cal to practical.
Though capable of remarkable feats of colour percep-
tion, the human eye is a poor instrument for measuring
colour. The typical human eye responds to wavelengths
from about 390 to 750 nm and can distinguish unsaturated
or “process” colours created by mixes of multiple wave-
lengths, such as pinks and purples.
Colour perception differs substantially from individual to
individual. The intensity, colour and spatial distribution of
illumination govern how colour is perceived.
Shape and shading are particularly influential, as dem-
onstrated in the sets of colour perception tests (pictured
below). Moreover, production lines present cans for inspec-
tion at rates ranging from hundreds to thousands per
minute, and in random orientation.
Not surprisingly, human inspectors – even those specially
trained or said to have “calibrated vision” – have been
replaced with automatic inspection systems by quality can
makers worldwide. Yet while some of these systems offer
reliable decoration inspection and mixed-label detection,
until recently they have not been able to provide accurate
colour measurement.
Colour Perception Tests
SpectrophotometryLight-measuring instruments, specifically spectrophoto
meter-based devices, have been used to measure colour
for many years. A typical spectrophotometer features a
small (3mm to 5mm) aperture that allows it to measure
colour over a tiny area of an object. As the illustrations
show, when the light from the area reflects into the device,
a diffractive surface breaks it down into its primary colours.
A spectrophotometer can then provide very accurate
measurements of those colours. That accuracy is the key
advantage of these devices, along with their relatively
low cost.
By design however, these devices have practical draw-
backs for can making applications. Because they only
assess one tiny area at a time, they are not suited to
inspect complex colourful patterns. Nor are they designed
to measure process colours or halftones. In short, they do
not perceive colour like the human eye, which, at point of
sale, is the ultimate judge of container colour and pattern
quality.
Delta-E valuesDelta-E (dE) is a unit used to quantify the distance (dif-
ference) between a reference colour and a similarly
coloured sample, based on coordinates in the so-called
Lab colour space. The printing, paint and ink industries, for
example, have traditionally relied on this metric, employing
spectrophotometers to obtain the measurements.
The Lab colour model is intended to approximate
human vision, in the sense that it is perceptually uniform:
the perceived difference between two colours separated
by one unit of distance (dE = 1) is independent of the
region of colour space (red, green, etc) in which the col-
ours are located. A dE of one or less represents a barely
perceptible difference.
The adjoining figure illustrates the concept of percep-
tual uniformity and non-uniformity. All colours that can be
Colour Perception Test 1 (Created by R. Ausbourne)The brown squares on the cube are the exact same colour. This illusion occurs when the brain judges quantities relative to their surroundings rather than an objective standard.
Colour Perception Test 2 (Created by Edward H. Adelson, Professor of Vision Science at MIT)The illusion that B is lighter than A is caused by the relative contrast of the surrounding dark squares and by the fact our vision compensates for the shadow of the cylinder.
Colour Perception Test 3 (Created by Rashid Bin Muhammad)Colours often appear bright-er when bordered by frames. Note how the colours on the left appear more vibrant and pure.

practical drawbacks, is not ideal for can making applications‘

perceived by the human eye are contained in the horse-
shoe-shaped region (this particular diagram represents
the so-called XYZ colour space, which is not perceptually
uniform). Colours falling on the boundary of each ellipse
are 10 dE units from the ellipse centre.
Note how the sizes of the ellipses increase dramatically
as one “moves” from blue to green. Yet the perceptual
“span” of the colours within each ellipse will appear about
the same to a typical observer. In the corresponding dia-
gram for Lab colour space, each ellipse would be a circle
and all the circles would be the same size, with a radius
of 10 dE.
Thus, human colour perception acuity varies depending
on the colour, and the dE metric attempts to compensate
for this.
Camera-basedCamera-based technology bridges the most useful capa-
bilities of man and machine for the purpose of practical,
accurate colour measurement. Spectrophotometers do
not function the same way as the human eye, but cam-
eras, by design, see and classify colour the way we do.
Their matrix of RGB (red, green, blue) sensors operates with
sensitivity to light levels and colour like the photoreceptors
(cones) in the eye, and the range of colours perceived by
a camera – its “gamut” – is similar to the gamut of human
vision.
Today’s digital cameras are reliable and affordable.
With the advent of bright and long-lived white LED illumina-
tors, gigahertz-class computers and “intelligent” algorithms
for pattern recognition, camera-based colour inspection
systems have, over the last decade, matured. They rival
humans in qualitative assessment of complex colourful
patterns, and greatly exceed human capability in quan-
titative colour measurement, speed and dependability.
To meet the demand for 100 per cent colour consistency,
practical inspection tools for can makers now exist.
Colorimetric technologyCamera-based colorimetric technology has been a focus
of machine vision’s leading developers since 1979. This
work converged and continued with the establishment of
Applied Vision Corporation in the 1990s.
In pursuit of accurate colour measurement, funda-

mental challenges – such as providing highly stable illu-
mination and automatic self-calibration – have been
resolved. Based on advances in solid-state lighting, digital
cameras, computer processors and pattern-recognition
algorithms, the KromaKing line of camera-based systems
provides accurate, multiple-region colour measurement
and inspection.
To measure and inspect complex can decoration in a
real-world setting requires application-specific software,
simple and intuitive user interfaces, and robust algorithms.
In some cases, dedicated part-handling mechanisms are
essential, such as indexing star wheels capable of spinning
a can while it is imaged with a line-scan camera, which
generates an “unwrapped” (complete outside) view of
the container surface.
To summarise the concepts simply and meaningfully,
Applied Vision calls this Global Colorimetric Standard
(GCS) technology. GCS technology provides consistent
results worldwide, in a range of system designs for varying
inspection needs.
KromaKing tools for can makersFor years, can makers worldwide have benefited from
colour decoration inspection and mixed-label detection
provided by intuitive, camera-based KromaKing systems.
Applied Vision has invested tens of thousands of hours of
research and development in making colour measure-
ment and decoration inspection reliable and easy for can
makers. The goal is to minimise rejected and HFI product,
for increased operational productivity and profitability.
Currently, a suite of KromaKing colorimetric tools is
available to address various sizes and stages of two and
three-piece can manufacturing operations. Each system
measures multiple regions of colour in complex patterns
for flaws, including colour shifts, pattern defects and print
registration errors. ❑

New Equipment
New roller from AniloxAnilox Metering Technology has announced the launch of the new and improved Generation 3 Anilox Roller.
The Generation 3 Anilox Roller is a fully integrated roller. This removes the process of fitting an interchangeable shaft through each roller and significantly reduces set up time. Based on AMT’s current standard large diameter Anilox Roller, the com-pany has taken all the best ele-ments from the lightweight shell and combined them with a lightweight and fully integrated Anilox Roller that is still easy to handle. Additionally any

risk of roller damage through the changing of shaft has now been eliminated.
The final weight for a Generation 3 large diameter Anilox Roller is 85kg. By way of a comparison, a steel roller of the same size weighs approxi-mately 300kg.
In-depth trials have shown that the performance of the Generation 3 Anilox Roller once in production compares favourably to the current style of lightweight roller. The tests have centred around three vital elements of roller perform-ance; lacquer application, the
A new lift which can be used as part of the handling process in a can plant has been launched by Penny Hydraulics.
The Mezz Lift is available in a wide range of configurations to enable users to handle a variety of loads of all shapes and sizes safely and efficiently between two floors, including ground level and mezzanine, in warehouses, stores and work-shops.
The standard model can handle loads up to 500kg through lifting heights exceed-ing 4m. A choice of options including heavy duty models, high lift capability and different platform sizes with a range of
Getting a lift with Penny Hydraulicsattachments and load cradles allows users to specify a version that is uniquely matched to their own handling requirement. It is an alternative to other forms of handling equipment such as lift trucks, conveyors or cranes.
Compact design minimises the Mezz Lift’s footprint without restricting the available storage space and working area. Robust construction using steel compo-nents ensures the Mezz Lift can be installed in virtually any loca-tion, indoors or out, where there is access to a standard 240V 13A power supply without the need for a floor pit. The lift is supplied with its own motor pump unit. Self-contained hydraulic power
provides smooth and precise operation. The lifting speed of 0.5m/s means that a four metre distance between the floor and mezzanine is covered in just eight seconds.

finish given on the coated sheet and roller life-span.
The integral element of the Generation 3 Anilox Roller increases the registration accu-racy over the sheet and elimi-nates the run out from the roller.
The composition of the roll-er allows the coppering and chroming procedures to be sim-plified and improves upon the lifespan of the shaftless light-weight rollers currently in pro-duction, particularly within the chroming process.
plungers, allow manufactur-ers to speed production proc-esses while reducing the risk of product damage when han-dling sensitive goods with vary-ing height requirements. With a unique aluminium design, Piab’s new level compensators pro-vide a lightweight alternative to traditional products manufac-tured from steel, reducing the total weight of vacuum han-dling devices.
This lighter weight allows vacuum systems to move more quickly, so manufacturers can increase production capacity. To help manufacturers reduce the risk of damage to sensi-

tive products, the LC series not only compensates for height differences but also ensures suction cups are gently placed on objects and reduces the need for exact cup position-ing. This makes the compensa-tors ideal for handling sheets of glass, plastic and metal. The LC level compensators also allow an extra long stroke length compared to traditional solu-tions. In addition, they provide shock and vibration absorption to protect other components in vacuum handling systems.

Rexam’s Fusion bottles used by RokRok Natural Energy is using alumini-um bottles from Rexam for its energy drinks range.
US-based Rok has already started using the Fusion beverage bottles, which are supplied by the can maker.
The 33cl bottles are being produced at the company’s Epjovice plant, near Prague in the Czech Republic.
The Rok range was previously only available in 25cl bottles. The energy drink, made from 100 per cent natural ingredients and aimed primarily at 25 to 45 year olds, was launched in 2009.
“The consumer trial that we ran in 2010 proved we had the bever-age and the brand right, but we needed a packaging option that was going to represent the premium product inside,” says Bruce Renny of Rok Natural Energy.
“Rexam’s Fusion bottle provides the elegance and impact that the product deserves.”
Rok Natural Energy drink in Fusion bottles will be available in the mar-ket from March 2011 in top end restaurant and bars, as well as hair salons where it will be offered as a lunchtime beverage.
Gary Aslam, from Rexam Beverage Can, said: “It has been great work-

ing with the team at Rok to develop
the Fusion bottles. Not only do the bottles look great, but they really do represent the great drink inside.”
Throughout 2011, the company will launch a range of new products, including Rok Natural Energy Light and Rok Natural Energy Light with antioxidants.

PepsiCo has launched a new slim line Diet Pepsi can in conjunction with New York’s Fall 2011 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
The Diet Pepsi Skinny Can will be available to consumers nationwide in March.
The fashion week, which took took place between February 10 and 17, was launched with a series of fash-ion events and celebrations. These included an art installation by fash-ion commentator, Simon Doonan, and collaborations with acclaimed designers, Charlotte Ronson and Betsey Johnson.
“Our slim, attractive new can is the perfect complement to today’s most stylish looks, and we were excit-ed to throw its coming-out party during the biggest celebration of innovative design in the world,” says Jill Beraud, chief marketing officer, PepsiCo.
As part of the festivities, fash-ion commentator, Simon Doonan, famous for his store window displays, unveiled a special collaboration at the Diet Pepsi Style Studio located in New York’s fashionable Soho neigh-bourhood on February 11. Featuring Diet Pepsi’s slim, attractive new cans and incorporating Jonathan Adler designs, the window installation is a unique fusion of fashion and art.

Brewer Anheuser-Busch has launched Busch Light in cans that show when the beer is cool enough for drinking.
Chromatic Technologies Inc (CTI), a specialised inks company, has pro-vided the technology in the form of a temperature indicator that turns blue when the beverage has chilled to the perfect drinking temperature.
The cans and bottles of Busch Light will carry a distinctive Ice Cold Easy Indicator that turns blue at tem-peratures around 46 to 48°F (8 to 9°C). The products will be available in all domestic markets, and will be supported by marketing efforts via billboards, point-of-purchase and magazine advertising.
The aluminium cans of Busch Light carrying the new indicators are in 10,
“I’m thrilled to be working with Diet Pepsi in creating a truly one of a kind window installation – one of my boldest creations yet – that everyone can enjoy,” says Doonan.

12, 16 and 24 oz sizes. The cans will turn blue at 46.4°F (8°C), while bottle labels will sport the unique CTI inks on the 12, 22 and 40 oz bottles with temperature activation occurring at 48.2°F (9°C).
The move by Anheuser-Busch reflects new business for CTI, which has provided similar thermo chromic technology to Coors beers since 2007. Additional beverage companies including Cerveza Atlas (Panama), Coca-Cola (Latin America) and Pacifico Beer in Mexico already utilise the CTI tech-nology.
“It is very rewarding when a major brewer like Anheuser-Busch has embraced our unique attributes,” says Steve Kaczmarek, CTI’s vice president of sales and marketing.
“It has been a lengthy but obviously rewarding process to get our foot in the door. We are extremely pleased to expand our presence in this vital market of beverages that benefit from temperature indicators.”
CTI’s multi-patented proc-ess involves cold temperatures impacting select portions of bever-age bottle labels and cans that then turn the distinctive dark blue colour, thus assuring the customer of a refreshingly chilled product. A major achievement is the inks’ ability to be applied to beverage cans dur-ing fast-paced, high-speed manu-facturing line processes.

Striking cans for cricket fansA range of striking cricket-
themed promotional cans which feature photo-like images are being manufac-tured by Rexam in the UK for brand owner A G Barr.
Rexam has created eight promotional designs for the 330ml cans used for Rubicon’s Exotic Fruit Juice drinks, pro-moting their Love Cricket campaign. This includes their Spin to Win competition which offers consumers the chance to win a number of cricket related prizes.
For further information please visit www.agbarr.co.uk
The cans feature Rexam’s Illustration Impact technology, which allows photo-like images to be printed on the metal, to display images of cricket stars Graeme Swann and Muttiah Muralitharan. These striking images will help to catch the eye of cricket fans.
Adrian Troy, from AG Barr, said: “Having such big cricket per-sonalities as Graeme and Muttiah on-pack is a great boost for Rubicon as they are both world stars, who are instantly recognis-able to cricket fans and will help to drive sales. Cricket is one of the biggest sports in the UK and continues to grow in popularity, especially with England’s brilliant performance to retain the Ashes and consumer excitement about the World Cup.”
The promotional cans went on sale in February and will remain on shelves for two months. They will help build on last year’s cricket themed on pack promotion, which helped Rubicon to achieve its highest ever sales.
Gary Aslam, European customer services and regional sales director at Rexam Beverage Can, added: “We have a great relationship with A G Barr and we consistently deliver high qual-ity products, even under pressure. On this occasion the Rexam customer sales team worked quickly to deliver the promotional cans to Rubicon in less than a week. The high quality of the cans really enhance the complex artwork and helps Rubicon to appeal to all cricket fans.”

For 25 years now, Apeal has demonstrated the advan-
tages of steel for packaging as a reliable and sustain-
able packaging material. With a young and dynamic
team, Apeal will further develop its new and ambitious
strategy. This strategy aims to establish that steel packaging
is not only a highly performing packaging material, but has
also to be considered as a permanent resource, because
of its unique recyclability features. Thanks to these
overall performances and the growing demand
of steel industry for recycled steel scrap for reuse
in all kinds of applications, Apeal will further
facilitate the optimal regulatory conditions for
the manufacturing, marketing and recycling of
steel for packaging.
Apeal also wants to develop a knowledge
centre for steel for packaging in Europe, moni-
toring legislation, providing technical knowhow,
statistics and messaging. In other words, Apeal
will become the reference in Europe for every
question relating to steel for packaging.
I am a bioengineer specialised in environ-
mental management. I have previously worked
mainly in the humanitarian and development
area with water and waste management and
environmental project management with major
organisations, including which the European Commission.
In Apeal, I am in charge of developing a knowledge
centre for the technical matters of steel for packaging:
environment, sustainability, life cycle inventory and analy-
sis, recycling, food contacts/food safety, and all other
technical questions that may arise. The idea is that Apeal
becomes the European
knowledge centre for steel
for packaging, for our
members as well as for our
customers and consumers.
Working with can makersApeal represents and promotes steel for packaging. We
work together with other packaging material representa-
tives when common interests are involved. According to
the environmental concerns of its members, Apeal wants
to focus on the infinite recyclability of steel packaging,
and demonstrate that steel is a permanent resource, a
story that steel shares with the other major metal pack-
aging material, aluminium. In this view, Apeal and the
European Aluminium Association are collaborating under
a new umbrella called Metal Packaging Europe (MPE). Its
formation was agreed in Brussels at the end of May 2010
by executives from European Metal Packaging (Empac),
Beverage Can Makers Europe, Apeal (the packaging steel
manufacturers) and the European Aluminium Association.
On a day-to-day basis, Apeal collaborates with Empac
and MPE. Indeed, can makers and producers of steel
for packaging have of course a common interest in the
development of the metal packaging market for bever-
ages. Apeal will support certain initiatives made by the can
making associations.
Steel DayApeal will organise a Steel Day on the Metal Plaza during
the Interpack Fair in Düsseldorf. We will demonstrate in
front of a public of professionals, the efficiency of steel for
packaging in terms of sustainability and reliability.
We shall also be present at the Empac General Assembly
in Edinburgh on June 9 where we will organise an interac-
tive workshop for the can makers, our customers. With
this workshop we want to familiarise them with the overall
benefits of steel for packaging and also create participa-
tion and commitment from the can makers. This will allow
them to better convince their clients to choose steel for
packaging.
Steel is 100 per cent recyclable. Furthermore, the fact
that steel is magnetic makes it the easiest and most eco-
nomical material to sort and recover. Steel loses none of its
strength or inherent qualities, which makes it infinitely recy-
clable. Well-established routes for collection and recovery
of steel cans have ensured recycling excellence. In 2008,
over 70 per cent of steel packaging in Europe has been
recycled, and CO² emissions per tonne of steel produced
are now 50 per cent lower than they were 40 years ago.
Steel making processes accept all kinds of used steel
packaging, including drinks, food and paint cans, as well
as aerosols - all of which can be recycled indefinitely into
an unlimited range of new steel products without any loss
of quality.
Knowledge centreThe metal packaging industry is aware of its importance
to our planet as a resource using sector. We have always
taken this responsibility seriously. Steel packaging has an
excellent story to tell as the environmental credentials of
the material are extraordinary and unique, meeting many
of the essential criteria for packaging in the sustainabil-
ity-conscious 21st century. I’m looking forward to further
developing Apeal as the steel for packaging knowledge
centre in Europe. I will also be involved in the calculation
of the yearly recycling rates for steel for packaging for the
European countries.
Apeal’s slogan summarises very well the message we
want to spread about steel packaging: “protecting today,
preserving tomorrow”. ❑
