Principal’s Message Dates For Diaries
Due to enrolled children’s life threatening Anaphylactic Allergic reaction to all nuts and peanut products,
we would like to encourage families not to send these products to school with their children. These
include peanut butter, nutella, sesame seeds, loose nuts, muesli, nut or chocolate bars or any products
containing any type of nuts. We appreciate your support in this matter.
20 February, 2014
If they walk or ride to the skate park, local shop or sporting practice they really
need to have a plan if someone approaches them.
Best of luck to the zone swimmers going off to Lakeside Leisure Centre tomorrow.
Mrs Bowman will be accompanying our students and I look forward to hearing
about the great day you will have.
It was great to see the many parents who were able to come
to the “Meet the Teacher” night. The sessions were a good
opportunity to meet our class teachers and hear about
classroom routines and organisation. Of course it wasn’t an
appropriate time to discuss individual students and concerns.
If you do have these questions you need to contact the
school or your child’s class teacher to arrange
a n i n t e r v i e w a t a c o n v e n i e n t t i m e .
The information in this newsletter about the stranger danger
incident is a real concern. Our school has addressed the
issue in classrooms where teachers have talked about
awareness and strategies to deal with such situations. It is
vitally important that families have these talks and reinforce
these strategies. If you child walks home or to school, talk
about a safe place they can go other than your house. It
might be a friends or relatives house or a shop on their
route.
Staff Carparks: Last week we had a reminder in our newsletter about the out of
bounds areas of our staff carparks for both students and families. Families are
not permitted to park in the staff car parks at any time. This is a Departmental
Policy. We ask for your cooperation in this matter. Also when dropping students
off, they are to use the concrete pathways and not enter or leave the school
through the staff carparks. Please help us keep your students safe.
Family Update Information: Thank you to all families that very promptly got
their information sheets back to the office. Please note that if there are no
changes, please send it back into the office marked no changes required.
Expression of Interest for Camps for Years 3&4 and 5&6: Expression of
Interest forms for Stage 2 & 3 Camps have been forwarded home this week.
Please note that final costings cannot be finalised until we have a definite
numbers. It would be appreciated if the E.O.I notes can be sent back with the
$20 deposit at your earliest convenience.
Young Boy Approached By A Stranger at Seaham: Police are
appealing for information after a young boy was approached and followed by a
man in a van at Seaham last week. About 4.10pm last Wednesday, a 12 year
old boy was walking along Cross Street when a white van stopped opposite
him. Police have been told a man called out to the boy and offered him a lift.
He declined and continued walking, however, the driver followed him before
doing a U-turn in Regal Place and driving off. The boy returned home and later
informed his parents about the incident before reporting it to police.
Police from Port Stephens Local Area Command are investigating the matter
and are looking for a man who has been described as being of Caucasian
appearance, aged in his 50s with grey hair, a beard and wearing a beanie. The
van is described as being a white van with no rear passenger windows and
missing a hub cap off the rear right wheel.
Meanwhile, the incident has again prompted police to encourage parents to
discuss the “Safe People, Safe Places”, messages with their children, including:
Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are
at all times.
Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near
busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other
people.
Know where safe places are - a shop, service station, police station,
library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of
these places and ask them to call the police.
Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help -
police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.
Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with
someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you
don’t know the person inside, do not stop.
If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are
scared.
If someone tries to grab you, yell out, “Go away, I don’t know you”. This
lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don’t
know.

Canteen: Our canteen is a key part of the school experience for the students
and they love seeing family members in there from time to time. We are still
needing some more volunteers to come forward to assist. even if it's for 1 day
per term this would be a huge assistance. Fridays seem to be the day we are in
need of most. If you can help out please contact Leanne Cox 0410320957.
Fundraising: We are in the process of planning our fundraising activities

Battery Recycling Program: With the support of Battery
World Maitland, our school will be participating in battery recycling
program during Terms 1 & 2.
What do I have to do? Your challenge is to collect as many batteries
as you can and drop them into the purple recycling bin in the office.
(Batteries only in bin).
How much money will the school get? The school will receive $2
per kilogram of batteries.
What sort of batteries? Every sort of battery you can image. Car
and truck batteries weigh the most, so they are awesome (but please
put them next to the bin). Also household AA, AAA, C,D,9V, video,
mobile phone, drill, digital camera, laptop, toy, remote controlled car
batteries.
Can I take them straight to Battery World Maitland? Yes, if you
would like to take them straight to Battery World Maitland, just
mention Seaham School when you drop them in their recycling bin
and they will add them to our tally.
What’s in it for me? Apart from earning money for your school and
improving the school? We have some water bottles and mini garbage
bins that we will give to students supporting this program (while
stocks last). Please remember to leave the car and truck batteries
near the bin only.
Student Corner: Congratulations to Jayden and Cody Hancock who
have already achieved great things in athletics this season. Cody has
recorded season best in 8 out of 10 events in Under 9 Boys, he is
competing in 60m hurdles, 100m sprint and discus at Regions.
Jayden has season best in 7 out of 10 events in Under 12 boys, and is
competing in Discus at Regions, held at Mingara this weekend.
We wish both boys the very best for this weekend.
When we have room in our weekly newsletter, we offer a student
corner section. This is for out of school activities, events, special
occasions or achievements that students and families would like to
published. Please be aware that if you would like a photo, you need
to supply a good quality one per email or bring it in for scanning,
along with all the relevant information. Again please remember it is
only possible when space permits.
