MISSION STATEMENT

November 2021!

**** New programming is being added rapidly—please check our whiteboard and bulletin

boards frequently for new trips, classes and workshops!

Seaglass Village hosted its first Gala to commemorate the opening of Seaglass Village and the

start of our very first Director,!Alyce!Deveau.! Nearly 100 members, volunteers, friends and

family gathered on October 15 for our early evening celebra#on just across the lawn from

Swampsco&’s Town Hall at the First Church Congrega#onal where the office is located.!!

Seaglass Village, modeled a-er the Beacon Hill Village, consists of community, partnership,

and volunteers as we help each other age in our homes.! The Na#onal Village Movement is

growing throughout the country and now boasts 350 villages.! These vibrant and vital organiza-

#ons recognize the importance of socializa#on and community building as well as services to

address our changing needs. !Villages are nonprofit organiza#ons designed to help each other

carry out some of those du#es that we are no longer comfortable doing.! !!

Our Seaglass Village grew out of Swampsco&’s Aging Friendly Ini#a#ve.! You may recall the

extensive needs assessment that we complete in 2019 when we found that 85% of our aging

popula#on wish to remain in our homes as we age. We also learned that people have

missed!doctors!appointments, need help with intermi&ent household needs, and genuinely

wish to connect with their neighbors.! Recommenda#ons that came out of this assessment in-

cluded the forma#on of a village.! Another interes#ng finding from the needs assessment is

that 40% of our residents wish to volunteer.!!So!matching these needs is a winwin for all.! The

village will be made up of volunteers who want to help with those things we are not able to

complete.!The Swampsco& COA is excited to explore the many collabora#ve ventures knowing

that working together with Seaglass Village, we will be able to address the growing needs while

building community.!The Seaglass Village just opened our office at the First Church, Congrega-

#onal in Swampsco& at 40 Monument Ave.! Please learn more about this through the web-

site:!www.seaglassvillage.org,!

Monthly Message from Greater Lynn Senior Services:

Honoring the Important Work of Family Caregivers !

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to

honor the record 53 million adults in the U.S. who offer

unpaid care assistance to aging parents, adult children liv-

ing with disabilities, family members with serious illness-

es, and the list goes on, including grandparents raising

grandchildren. !

According to Caregiving in the U.S. 2020, a recent report

from AARP and the National Alliance on Caregiving,

more than 1 in 5 Americans are caregivers, contributing as

much as $470 billion in free assistance to family members,

either as a result of old age or related to a specific diagno-

sis. Of those caring for an older adult, nearly half support

the 6 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease or

dementia today in the U.S. Many caregivers fall into the

category referred to as the “sandwich generation,” people

who are raising children under 18 while also caring for an

aging or frail parent, often contributing financially to the

home as well.!

The true value of family caregivers to our society cannot

be underestimated. The federal government recognized the

tremendous role caregivers play by making funding for

and delivery of services to these ofteninvisible individu-

als part of the Older Americans Act in 2000. Area Agen-

cies on Aging like Greater Lynn Senior Services are man-

dated to provide assistance to caregivers, and we do so

through a variety of supports, all aimed at alleviating the

stress that so often accompanies this work. We offer in

home assessments to ensure a safe living environment;

referrals to other programs, like inhome services; support

groups; oneonone and family counseling; education and

training; help finding respite care; specialized assistance

for people caring for an individual living with Alzheimer’s

disease or dementia; and much more. Most services are

available virtually. !

Being a caregiver can be challenging and frustrating. But

it can also be one of the most important and rewarding

things you ever do. Caregiving can turn your life upside

down. Call us. We’ll help you get it right again.!

We sit down for poetry

and before I know it !

my father has begun!

blowing bubbles in his coffee!

through the stirrer which he describes!

“Primitively speaking, it’s a straw

but a peculiar one in that it has a small

diameter” !

!

Puzzled, but not embarrassed

only because we are alone, I inquire as to why

he is playing with his beverage!

He replies emphatically: !

“I’m trying to accelerate the departure of heat…

!

rinsing my exhale in transit

through a very useful tool

a flimsy piece of plastic

that has a bend I may have

induced already”

!

“serving its purpose well”

he observes

“representative of innovation”

he comments !

“I’m aware of what’s at hand”

he declares

“this is not a novel application”

he demurs !

“I’m trying to cool it down!”

he proclaims loudly

for those uninitiated

and absent !

!

“I know it must be working,

it’s just physics.” he announces with a grin. !

Co-written by Senior Center Member, Dennis Scolamiero (87) & his

daughter, Samantha!

!

Coming Soon! A New Poetry Workshop led by caregiver,

member & writer, Samantha Janeaux. Stay tuned for “Not

Your English Teacher’s Poetry” - a workshop to enhance con-

nections with others and our emotions through the spoken

word . Perfect for poetry lovers and poetry skeptics. In the

spirit of National Family Caregiver’s Month, Samantha has

shared her father’s poem in the next column which was writ-

ten at the Senior Center one afternoon. Below are her own

thoughts on caregiving:

Caring for older adults, especially our paents,!has

its share of joy and heart break. One of my coping strate-

gies has been to appreciate the li&le moments and idio-

syncrasies of my dad (who is living with demen#a and

memory loss) which let me know that he is "s#ll in

there.”!My father is an electrical engineer by training

who worked on top secret projects that he could never

tell me!about. It wasn't un#l I took him to Draper Labora-

tory's 50th Anniversary Extravaganza commemora#ng

the first Lunar Landing that I can honestly now say "Yeah,

my dad was!a rocket scien#st." He would demure from

this #tle never having achieved a PhD, instead!working

for Doc Draper as an intern from Northeastern Universi-

ty. Some of his colleagues whom we met at the party

shared with me that while they were geIng their PhDs,

Dennis was already working on the Apollo project, "he

knew more about it than I did," one of them said.!!!

The fact that he can s#ll string sentences together

and even make jokes gives me a small amount of emo-

#onal relief along!the long unwinding journey of the mind

that is demen#a. Some#mes he doesn't know my name,

or where the bathroom is in his own home, but he s#ll

knows enough to call me "Semolina" or "Salami" if I ask

him “what’s my name is today?” I never would have im-

agined that Italian flour or charcuterie that contain le&ers

of my name!could so easily convey that amount of joy.! If I

could, I would follow him around all day with a coffee!cup

catching poems as they dribble from him lips!before they

evaporate forever.! !

The poems can be sad and evoke a sense of loss,

but they exist, and that is a strange kind of comfort. !
