Sea Creature Project Sea Creature Project Sea Creature Project Sea Creature Project Our sea creature projects were a long and hard process. We

started out with finding an interesting animal that we wanted to learn

more about. Then, we took some small notes and a sketch of the

animal. After that, we did a more detailed sketch. Our class drew a

final drawing on a piece of strong art paper. We painted the paper

blue and put salt on it to make it look like the ocean. Soon after that,

we took colored pencils and made our animals have color. We had to

do it in layers, so that they would look bold.

After the coloring, our class took more detailed notes and

divided them into headings. We went to Word and put the notes onto

pages. We made covers, put in pictures, and other cool pages. When

we were all done, we used the color printer to print them.

And that is how we made our sea creature books! Hope you like

them.

SPERM WHALE

HABITAT

The sperm whale (physeter macrocephalus) can be found in any ocean, cold or

warm water.

FOOD CHAIN

Giant squid is 80% of the sperm whale’s diet. The rest is octopus, shrimp, fish,

crab and other creatures. It can be dangerous for whales to get its food because

the squid fight back. The sperm whales’ only predator, besides humans, is orcas

that will attack weak adults and babies.

INTERESTING FACTS

1. Sperm whales have the largest brain of any animal in existence (5 times the

size of a human’s).

2. Sperm whales are the largest toothed mammal.

3. They live to be about 60 years old.

4. Adult males live alone, and women and calves live together.

5. Adults can eat up to a ton (2,000 lbs.) of food per day.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The head of a sperm whale is squared, with a small jaw. The head is large and is

⅓ of its body length. They have one blow hole on the left side of their head. This

blow hole projects forward instead of up.

BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS

Sperm whales do a low blow as they come up to the surface of the ocean. They

spend most of their time at the surface. When they come up only their head comes

up and their tail hangs floppily down. Sometimes two or more groups of sperm

whales combine to make a group of twenty to thirty sperm whales. Female sperm

whales spend most of their time at the surface, and twenty five percent of their

time sleeping. All of this is done in the day time.

Manta rays are no doubt, BIG FISH. They can

grow up to 25 feet long and weigh 3000 pounds.

Giant squids grow up in places that are safe. Most live in Arctic waters. Their only predators are deep sea sharks. Giant squids have been spotted off the coast of New Zealand. Giant squids live in the midnight zone.

the water off the top of the ocean.

Sea snakes are also called

coral reef snakes. There are over 50 species of sea

snakes. One of these is hydrophiinae. Sea snakes

may swim up rivers. They have been seen 160

kilometers (99 mi.) from the sea.

There are two things a nudibranch likes to do-

1. Move around alot

2. Eat enormous amounts of food

If they are disturbed some can even swim away.

These creatures have complex sense organs which

are able to detect their food. This nudibranch feeds on

sponges, algae, and anemones. They eat enormous

amounts of spicy foods without paying the consequences.

You can find these nudibranchs almost anywhere.

When you snorkel, you may see them in the sandy

shallows and reefs. They go all the way down to the

murky waters of 1 mile down.

These nudibranchs are cute, but did you know some

physical characteristics of this creature? They’re snails

without a shell, so like a slug. They crawl on their belly

flesh, it might sound gross. It also has a rasp-like tongue.

MANDARIN FISH Did you know that the mandarin fish is one of the most breath-

taking fish ever found?

HABITAT The mandarin fish is native to the Pacific Ocean. You can usually find them

at the bottom of the ocean floor. Normally they are found inhabiting broken coral

rubble beds or under dead coral.

BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS Mandarin fish are usually very shy. They are so shy that any heavy breathing

or movement will scare them away back to their shelters. They are slow moving

fish that live in caves and rocks on the seabed.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS They have a broad depressed head and are primarily blue with orange, red, and

yellow wavy lines. Mandarin fish are small, reaching a maximum length of 6 cm.

DIET Mandarin fish are carnivores. Mandarin fish feed on the bottom.

Swordfish swim throughout the oceans. They mostly live in the

Indian, Atlantic, and the Pacific Oceans. The swordfish PREFER

WARMER WATERS. Swordfish swim IN VARYING DEPTHS IN THE

OCEAN. You may see them on the surface of the ocean when they jump

out of the ocean doing an activity called breaching. Swordfish swim in a

variety of temperatures. If you go to one of the three oceans I listed,

Watch Out! They might swim past you.

When you look at a picture of a swordfish, you may not realize

some interesting characteristics. They can grow to be 14 ft long.

That’s about as long as my dad’s truck! They can weigh 1,400 pounds.

Swordfish have large eyes and no teeth. As they glide through the

water, you may notice silver, gray, blue, and brown. They can swim up to

50 miles per hour. Watch out when you go scuba diving!!

Swordfish are big, so they need to eat a lot to stay healthy and

alive. They eat blue fish, mackerel, hake, herring, squid, octopi, large

tuna fish, cephalopods, and pelagic fish. When they eat a small fish,

they swallow it whole. When they decide they want to feast on a big

fish, they attack it by slashing at it, then they eat it. Swordfish are

carnivores, which means they eat only meat. Take a picture, admire it.

But within reason, don’t touch it. It’s wild.

What eats a viperfish?

Dolphins and sharks tend to prey upon viperfish.

When hunting it tends to float motionless for hours waving its light

to attract other animals such as the dragon fish. When it’s close enough,

it swims at it at high speeds. Then it pierces it with its sharp teeth. Fun facts

The scientific name for a Blue Spotted Stingray is a Neotrygon Kuhlii.

It’s also commonly found in water up to 30 feet (9 meters) deep.

Did you know that blacktip reef sharks eat blue spotted stingrays? And that blue spotted stingrays eat queen parrotfish and mussels?

A blue spotted stingray has blue spots, two blue stripes on each side of the tail and is light green.

It buries itself in the sand to look for crabs and shrimp!!!!
