A Diploma was awarded to Dr Andrew Fraser BEng(Hons), PhD, CEng, MIStructE, MICE, and Dr Anthony E. Jones BEng(Hons), PhD, CEng, MICE for the paper ‘Effectiveness of punching shear reinforcement to EN 1992-1-1:2004’ published in The Structural Engineer, 19 May 2009 (Fig 3). A Diploma was also awarded to Professor Paolo Foraboschi for the paper ‘Laminated glass columns’ published in The Structural Engineer, 15 September 2009. The author was unable to attend the ceremony. Murray Buxton Award (for papers of general interest published in The Structural Engineer during the session) The Medal was awarded to Tom Cosgrove BE, MEngSc, CEng, FIStructE, Eur Ing FIEI, Michael Quilligan BE, MEngSc, LicEng, MIEI, Bryan Whelan BE, MIEI, and Cian Murphy BE, MIEI for the paper ‘Redevelopment of Thomond Park, Limerick’ published in The Structural Engineer, 21 April 2009. Mr Whelan and Mr Murphy were unable to attend (Fig 4). Report Institution Awards This year’s Awards for individual service, young talent, and to authors of papers published in the Journal were presented at a special lunch at Glaziers’ Hall, London Introducing the event, Institution President Norman Train said that the Service Awards celebrated ‘the achievements of individuals rather than teams; the enthusiastic input of volunteer members’. The awards for papers respresented ‘the sharing of ideas that is the essence of what we do as a learned society’. The international quality of the papers is assured by not only being accepted as ‘best in class’ for publication after peer review, but by then being selected as ‘best in show’ by the Awards Panel. The Kenneth Severn and Young Engineers of the year Awards celebrated the nurturing of young talent. Vice Chairman of the Papers Panel, Joe Kindregan, explained that the papers went through a long approval process, all of those published in the Journal being read by each member of the Panel, before being being ranked, then discussed until a consensus was achieved. Guthrie Brown Award (for papers published in The StructuralEngineer written by a member or members under 40 years of age,whether presented at Ordinary Meetings/colloquia or not).

The Award was presented to David McGlade MA(Hons),MEng(Cantab) for the paper ‘Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge’published in The Structural Engineer, 21 July 2009 (Fig 5).

Derrington Construction Award (for papers referring toconstruction and/or health and safety, published in The StructuralEngineer during the session).

The Medal was presented to Geoff Harding OBE, DIC, CEng,FIStructE, MICE, and John Carpenter BSc(Eng), CEng, FIStructE,FICE, CFIOSH for the paper ‘Disproportionate collapse of ‘Class 3’buildings: the use of risk assessment’ published in The StructuralEngineer, 4 August 2009. Mr Harding was unable to attend theevent (Fig 6).

Husband Prize (for papers of merit related to bridges, published inThe Structural Engineer during the session).

The Award was presented to: José Luiz Miotto MSc, CEng,Carlito Calil Junior DSc, CEng, and Antonio Alves Dias DSc, CEngfor the paper ‘Log-concrete composite bridge decks in Brazil:requirements and applications’ published in The StructuralEngineer, 20 January 2009. The authors were unable to attend theceremony.

Sir Arnold Waters Medal (for the best paper presented by amember or members at a Branch meeting during the session). Themedal was awarded to Richard Taylor BSc, CEng, MIStructE,MICE for the paper ‘On the rack: Structural failure of pallet rackingsystems’ presented at a meeting of the Northern Counties Branch(Fig 7).

Clancy Prize (for merit to the author(s) of a paper published in TheStructural Engineer, which advances the understanding andpractice of the whole life management of structures). The Prize was awarded to: Philip Little BEng, Michael Hough BSc(Eng), DipStructEng, MSc, CEng, MIStructEMIEI, and Edward Mullarkey BE, MSc, MIEI for the paper ‘Stonecantilever stairs – inspection and analysis of cantilever stairs’published in The Structural Engineer, 21 April 2009 (Fig 8).

Kenneth Severn AwardKenneth Severn Award (for papers, written by an author or authors28 years of age or under at the start of the session on a topicchosen by the President, to be subsequently published in TheStructural Engineer).Award: Clement Thirion for his paper on the chosen topic: ‘TheStructural Engineer’s role in beating Professor Beddington’sPerfect Storm prescriptions’ (Fig 9) Commendations: Jonathan Bailey (Fig 10) and Michael Smales (Fig 11).

People Awards for service to the Institution

Lewis Kent Awards

These are made for personal services by a member of theInstitution or profession. Three award were made.– Alan Robert Leslie Crossman (F) for his dedicated service to theInstitution through the Thames Valley Branch, as an electedmember of Council and in particular his invaluable contribution tothe work of the Sustainable Construction Panel over many years(Fig 12). – Professor James Jie Min Ding (F) for his enduring and veryenthusiastic contribution to the development of the Institution'sChina Group since it inception in 2002. Prof. Ding was unable toattend the ceremony.– Angus Morrison Cormie (F) for his service, providing theInstitution with the benefit of his insightful Contractor’s perspectiveand commercial outlook, in the many varied Institution roles he hasheld, in particular Chairman of the Papers Awards Judging Paneland member of SCOSS (Fig 13).

Service Awards

These are made for services to the Institution as a branch ordivision, or as an Institution representative.– Peter Burne Minett (F), for his much valued and extensivesupport to the Surrey Branch over a period of many years (Fig 14).– James Darsie Parsons (F), for his much valued and extensivesupport to the Wales Branch and as Director of the BenevolentFund for many years (Fig 15).– Srikumar Ghosh (F), for his loyal support over many years for theInstitution as our representative in Delhi, India. Mr Ghosh was unable to attend the event.Richard Hammond Aitken (F), for his loyal support over many yearsfor the Institution as Chairman of the New Zealand Division andrepresentative in Auckland. Mr Aitken was unable to attend theevent.John Cecil McCormick (F), for his much valued and extensivesupport to the Northern Ireland Branch for many years (Fig 16).

The Keith Eaton International Award

This is made for dedicated, valuable outstanding or exceptionalpersonal contributions towards the advancement of theInstitution’s international interests.

The Award was given to Anthony Charles Farrell (F), CaribbeanDivision, for his ongoing, valuable support of the Institution,including organising international conferences and other activitiesof the Caribbean Division, of which he was Chairman, particularlynoting the logistics that are required to lead and motivate amembership that is widely scattered in 11 countries around theCaribbean. This award was presented by the CEO, Martin Powellat the Patron’s Dinner, 15 April on his visit to the Caribbean (Fig 17).

The Young Structural Engineer of the Year Award

This competition is open to structural engineers under 28 years ofage who submit an entry on a structural engineering project inwhich they have a signficant input.

Four prizes were awarded to:Timothy Salmon won the award for his entry ‘Village Green FestivalStage’ (Fig 18).Peter Winslow was runner up for his entry ‘Stavros NiarchosFoundation Cultural Centre, Athens’(Fig 19).Donald Freeke was highly commended for his entry on‘Bridgewater Pottery Footbridge’ (Fig 20). Nikolaus Socratous was highly commended for his entry‘Integrating maths and Structural Engineering’. He was unable toattend the ceremony which was collected by his sponsor fromArup, Robert Pugh.

Honorary Fellowship Award

This Award is made to a distinguished or eminent person who hasgiven service to the profession. It was presented to Keith Clarke(Chief Executive, Atkins) (Fig 21).

The Lifetime Achievement Award

This very prestigious award which recognises the outstandingcommitment of one individual to the Institution was awarded toColin Davies for his wide ranging contributions to the Institutionover 55 years (Fig 22). Highlights include 23 years service to theNorth Thames Branch and 25 years support to candidates for theChartered Membership Examination, both in the UK and overseas.
