Long texts in SAP BW: ModelingEugene KhusainovBusiness Card

Posted on May. 27 2!!" #2:2" PM in BeginnerBusiness $ntelligen%e&B$'

The questions about representing in BW the texts longer than 60 symbols almost disappeared in BI forums. Ihope that my detailed posting with explanation of how to do it was not the least reason of it:

    Lin to the posting

!owe"er# the questions about formatting worboos and representing long texts are still there. It was the mainmoti"e for writing this blog. I$m going to demonstrate how to show long texts in Business %xplorer &naly'er. &lsoit is to be an introdu(tion to formatting worboos in %x(el using )isual Basi( for &ppli(ations *)B&+ (ode. The(ode is based on the modeling s(heme for long texts that I proposed in my posting. That$s why I$ll explain thiss(heme again as a prerequisite for formatting with my )B& (ode.

&s a side e,e(t# it-ll be shown how to use a exible infosour(e for simultaneous upload of texts and attributes

    *master data+.

/uppose# for simpli(ation# that we need to eep in /&1 BW the long text *des(ription+ with length of 230(hara(ters and show this text in Business &naly'er worboo.

I often en(ountered su(h an approa(h when this long des(ription has been (ut in four parts# 604symbol pea(esea(h *due to the well4nown limitation of /&1 BW+# and been ept as (hara(teristi( "alues of four infoob5e(ts#type of !&7 60.

    I don$t lie this approa(h# be(ause:

it$s di8(ult to display this long text in queries and worboos as a whole

it$s impossible to ha"e su(h long des(riptions time or language dependent

it$s somewhat slower to retrie"e from the database long alphanumeri( eys.

there is no problems with lower(ase and upper(ase in reports.

&ll this is enough for me to (ome up with another approa(h.I also use four infoob5e(ts *hereinafter referred to as 9Is;+. But# the pea(es of the long text are ept in the longtexts of the Is# not in their (hara(teristi( "alues *eys+.

We will (reate three Is and assign them as attributes of the one# basi( *master+ infoob5e(t. The ad"antage ofthis 4 we don-t ha"e to pass to the infopro"ider all four Is. We load in there 5ust one# master infoob5e(t.

I will demonstrate it on the example of the long des(ription of foreign trade goods groups. The pi(ture below

shows an %x(el le prepared for data load.

/o# here we go.=irst# we (reate an infoob5e(t for the 2nd part of the des(ription. There is no need to (reate it as !&7 60#be(ause we will eep the pea(es of the long des(ription *60 symbols ea(h+ in the long texts# totaling 230(hara(ters maximum length. It is e"en more (on"enient to determine ea(h I as ? 2 *the natural (ode ofthe goods group+.

/in(e we are not going to use the pea(es of the long des(ription for displaying separately# sorting or analy'ing@we de(lare them as A&ttribute nly-.>n(he( AWith master data- ag sin(e our attributes will not ha"e their own attributes. &nd you see also that ourtexts are going to be language4dependent.

=inally# (reate the masterFbasis infoob5e(t CD7>1EG whi(h will ha"e all the three (reated earlier infoob5e(ts asattributes.

The master I has the same type and features# ex(ept the following:

A&ttribute nly- ag un(he(ed AWith master data- ag is (he(ed

In the A&ttributes- tab of the infoob5e(t in(lude all the three (reated Is.

In order to load four pea(es of the long des(ription we need to ha"e four infoob5e(ts of !&7 60 type. We-ll notneed them after load. That-s why we are not (reating su(h Is. We use the system standard infoob5e(ts lie0&HH7ELI

    Long texts in SAP BW: Modeling + ,ollo) -%ugene Nhusaino"Business ard1osted on [un. 0# 2006 0:G2 1? in Beginner# Business Intelligen(e *BI+

Though# I ha"e stated in my rst blog that questions about long texts in /&1 BW almost disappeared#

Long texts in /&1 BW: ?odeling

one more appeared 5ust re(ently. This time the load of long text was (ondu(ted from 7F system. !ow to dealwith this issue is explained here. What will be said is applied to all sour(e systems *in(luding HB onne(t+ex(ept at les.

In (ase of loading long des(ription with 2304(hara(ter length we ha"e four elds in the datasour(e of the sour(esystem. The rst one bears the whole long des(ription *&& BBB# and HHH abbre"iations designate theparts of the long des(ription# 604(hara(ters length ea(h+. The other three# with 604(hara(ter length# may (ontainany information *shown as RRR# PPP and CCC+. ontent of these elds is not important# they are simplypla(eholders. What is important is the length of the elds.

&fter uploading data from the datasour(e# in BW information goes to transfer stru(ture. 1hysi(ally# it is so (alled1/& table. Information is (opied without any (hanges# G:G.

Huring further load from 1/& table to data target# the start routine in transfer rules wors out rst. In our (ase it(uts out the long des(ription in pea(es of 604symbol ea(h and pla(es them into (orresponding elds*infoob5e(ts+ of the (ommuni(ation stru(ture. &(tually# in(oming from 1/& table RRR# PPP and CCC information isrepla(ed by BBB# and HHH on the y.

    >pdate rules of data targets tae these pea(es of the long des(ription and pla(e them in their long texts.

/o# in general# the datasour(e should supply a eld with the original long text and se"eral elds with 60(hara(ters length *pla(eholders+. If you ha"e su(h a datasour(e# then dealing with it is ob"ious. If you ha"e not#

(reate it. The easiest way to do it is to (reate a generi( datasour(e with a table or "iew.
