PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE TABLE OF CONTENTS

Meetings ……………………………………………2President’s Message……………………………3Cultural………………………………………………4Social…………………………………………………5Hikes…………………………………………………6Sailing………………………………………………7-9Recreation…………………………………………10Team Sports………………………………………11 Tennis………………………………………………11

Hello Everyone,I want to start off with a big thank-you to all of you who came to

our election meeting. The cherry blossoms and parade gave us some severe competition and I appreciate all who made the effort to join us. Also thanks to those who sent in their absentee ballots. It is a thoughtful effort showing support of the club that makes the differ-ence.

I want to congratulate all of the board members who were elected. The fact that you volunteered deserves a big thank-you. The club can-

not survive without those of you who are willing to serve. I also want to say thanks to the board members from last year who faithfully attended our meetings and

worked hard to solve any problems. You are all GREAT in my book.To all of the award recipients: congratulations! It is our way of saying thanks so much for all you do. Since no other person

wished to run as president I guess I’m “it” for at least another year… Actually, I am enthusiastic about being president for another year, and I want to continue to make some changes in how the club operates, changes that I believe will serve members better. I have always said I wanted to have an open administration and I will continue to inform all of you as to where we are and where we are going in the future.

Several of us are in the process of creating a new web site that contains an integrated membership database and a “many-fea-tured”, password-protected, “members- only” area. In the future, we will: 1. Originate all communications from a single database of names and email addresses – you choose what you want to receive; 2. Bring back a form of the “Who’s Who membership directory; 3. Bring back a membership application using on-line tools that provide the option to record member interests. Everyone will have the option to make their “pro ile”/contact information “public” to other members or make their information “private”, restricted to the of ice or to leaders with a need to verify your membership status; 4. Establish and encourage a member’s forum about club experiences and suggestions; 5. Bring back membership cards, although the exact method has not been decided.

But here is one more important item to note: many ski clubs are moving to an electronic, “downloadable” magazine to save time, effort, and dollars. In addition to spending about $25,000 a year, our second largest overhead expense, we now have a six-week production cycle for the current printed version. We’d like to change the cycle to two weeks or less and we want to pull 95-99% of the magazine content from our web site through a simple program in the new environment. As of now, about 50% of content comes from the web and 50% from individual submissions, and the mixture is inef icient to review and combine, and we wind up enter-ing the individual submissions into the web site anyway. We’ll ask that most of you accept to the downloadable magazine but we’ll make a provision for those that still want it mailed. The magazine will be stored in the password-protected Members-Only area, not available to the public. There will be a small charge added to dues for a mailed magazine.

You might ask why charge for a mailed magazine when it has been included in dues and mailed for years? In the club’s iscal year 2000 we had about 3,400 members and the magazine’s cost ran to about $67,000. Even now in iscal year 13 at $25,000, it’s pretty expensive. Membership income has declined from the $113,000 level in FY 2000 to about $50,000 with 1,600 members in iscal year 13. So the amount of income to pay our overhead expenses is down. Since 2000, many changes were made to live within our means. And at this time there is no board support for increasing dues.

But there is one more thing to mention in the magazine discussion, and that is a number of people have told me that they would really appreciate getting a printed issue in the fall that describes the next season’s ski trips. This possibility is under consideration.

All of our members will be receiving either a form to verify contact information or a renewal notice in the mail for this year. Over the next two years, we hope to send out most renewal notices by email since we spend about $3,000 a year in membership mail-ings. For those people who don’t use an email address, we’ll continue to mail renewal notices. We will need everyone to review their contact information, especially email addresses, and of course we would like you to renew your membership if it expired on May 1, 2013. Those of you who do not have e-mail will be contacted by regular mail. This update re lects the new policy changes approved by the membership at our last election meeting; members will now have 12 months of membership regardless of when they sign up. I know the changes have been somewhat slow in developing. However, we were unable to go forward with this adjustment until we had your vote. Now that you approved , we can work with the Memberize company (the name of the new commercial web site and membership application) to build the new website, combining our membership data with all of our program activities in one area.

This consolidation will simplify and encourage our members to go to the website for all of our club business. We ask for sug-gestions as we go along and I especially want to increase the number of pictures on the future web site: real members having fun! Please send me your pictures. We want to include as many as possible on our website to make things more personal and FUN.

We hope to see all of you at our upcoming July pool party hosted again by Leo Boelhouwer and our June social meeting will be at the Crowne Plaza with a preview of our ski trips. Check out our Ski-O-Gram for upcoming events as well as our web site.

Send me your ideas, suggestions, comments etc. I am always interested in what you have to say. Send to [email protected]

Sincerely, Madeline

June 20ATONEMENT by Ian McEwan (National Best Seller – iction, Paperback 351 pgs)Summary: On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain of their country house. Watch-ing Cecilia is their housekeeper’s son Robbie Turner, a childhood friend who, along with Briony’s sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge. By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed forever. Atonement is Ian McEwan’s inest achievement. Brilliant and utterly enthralling in its depiction of childhood, love and war, England and class, the novel is at its center a pro-found–and profoundly moving–explora-tion of shame and forgiveness and the dif iculty of absolution.

July 18 (Book Discussion and July Book Exchange)THE PARIS WIFE by Paula McLain (his-torical iction, paperback 314 pgs)Summary: A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, this book cap-tures a remarkable period of time—Par-is in the twenties—and an extraordinary love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley. In Chicago in 1920, Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love, and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway and inds herself captivated by his good looks, intensity, and passion-ate desire to write. Following a whirl-wind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and vola-tile group of expatriates that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. But the hard-drinking and fast-living café life does not celebrate traditional notions of family and monogamy. As Hadley struggles with jealousy and self-doubt and Ernest wrestles with his burgeoning writing career, they must confront a deception that could prove the undoing of one of the great romances in literary history.

SAILINGWelcome summer by sailing on the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay! We welcome ole’ salts as well as those who don’t know bow from stern. Our Potomac skippers provide informal instruction while sailing, and classes are still available on the Bay.

S LSailing lessons from novice to expert will be offered by our talented, American Sailing Association certi ied, SCWDC sailing

instructors. Our instructors adhere to the SCWDC tradition of having fun while learning. Space is limited so sign up early! We plan to offer a Keelboat Class again this summer on the Chesapeake Bay. This class is designed for those who have taken

the centerboard class or who feel comfortable taking a centerboard boat out and want to move up to a heavier boat and sail in more challenging conditions. Students who successfully complete the course and test will receive ASA certi ication. Contact the trip leader to let him know you’re interested. Dates: Dates will be arranged based on students’ availability. Cost: $275 members, $300 guests, (includes text book, exam, and boat rental)Leader: Scott Hudson, 704-907-0910 (C), 571-633-8237 (W), [email protected], 1591 Spring Gate Dr, #3206, McLean, VA 22108

For those ready to take a small cruising boat out on the Chesapeake Bay for an overnight sail, we will also offer the Basic Coastal Cruising Course. The objective of this third-level class is to make the student ready to cruise in local and regional waters. It is taught on the Chesapeake Bay in boats about 30 feet long. Subjects taught are maneuvering in and out of a marina, boat preparation and inspection, safety, weather analysis, anchoring and emergency procedures. The students will improve on previously learned skills to feel comfortable chartering. Students who successfully complete the course may take the ASA test for certi ication. Contact the trip leader to let him know you’re interested. Dates: Dates will be arranged based on students’ availability. Cost: $290 members, $315 guests (includes text book, exam, and boat rental)Leader: Pete Stogis, 301-680-0864 or [email protected]

P SWe sail every Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. (earlier beginning in late August) and every other Saturday from 10 a.m. to

noon from Belle Haven Marina (www.saildc.com). Belle Haven is located on the George Washington Parkway just south of the Wilson Bridge. [Note: This is NOT the marina next to National Airport.] Turn off the Parkway at the Belle Haven Marina sign and follow the road until you see the boats and water, then park. The group meets outdoors, at or near the picnic tables by the marina’s of ice trailer.

No experience is necessary. We sail very stable, 19’ Flying Scots, each of which has an experienced skipper and often expe-rienced crew. You can go along for the ride or enhance your sailing instruction by participating in boat handling. Our skippers are also excellent teachers and will provide guidance to all interested in learning. After the sails, all hungry sailors adjourn to a local Greek/American restaurant, Primo’s, where we enjoy lunch or dinner in the back room (separate cost).

Dress is casual and should be appropriate for the weather. Occasionally you may get splashed which can be refreshing in the summer. There is a restroom if you need to change clothes after work. Sun block, water, hats, and croakies to keep your glasses on your head are also recommended.

Reservations are strongly encouraged – and the only way to guarantee a place on a boat. We reserve the number of boats and con irm our skippers based on the number of people who have signed up three days in advance. To reserve, call the trip leader listed in the magazine, web site, or Ski-O-Gram. If you get a machine, leave your name, phone number, number of people in your group, and the date of the sail; please repeat your name and number slowly so we’re sure we have it correct. Unless you hear otherwise, you have a reservation for that date. Plan to be at the marina at least 15 minutes before the sailing time. The marina is very busy on Saturday mornings and you may have to walk from a distant parking lot so allow suf icient time to be there by 9:45 a.m.. The trip leader will collect money, assign people to boats, and get everyone on the water. Exact change, or checks made payable to Belle Haven Marina, are appreciated.

If you can’t make it at the last minute, please call the trip leader, leaving a message if necessary. That way we can check our messages if you don’t show up and give your space to someone who did. If you have a last-minute chance to sail, call the trip leader or come by to see if there’s room. We can’t guarantee it, but we’ll try to accommodate you if possible.

If the weather is questionable, call the marina at 703-768-0018 an hour before the scheduled sailing time to see if they’re allowing boats to go out. The wind can be very different on the river than in downtown DC, so don’t assume there’s too much or too little wind to sail. Sometimes we can’t make a decision until we get to the marina. If you come and we can’t sail, we’ll head to Primo’s early.

If you have experience as a small boat sailor and would like to possibly be a skipper, please contact Mike Morris at 703-671-2623 or [email protected] to arrange a check-out.

The schedule for the Potomac sails is listed below. Updates on trip leaders will be posted on the website, in the Ski-O-Gram, and in future magazines.

C B SThis season we have several options to enjoy the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. We’ve planned half- and full-day sails, and also

evening full-moon cruises, and overnight sails aboard two different boats sailing on different parts of the Bay. The half- and full-day sails and the full-moon cruises will be aboard Wharf Rat, a 40-foot sloop based out of Pasadena, MD.

We’ve sailed with Captain Larry (www.atlanticsailingexp.com) for several years now and are looking forward to another fun season with him! Bring your lunch and sun block and you’re ready for a great day, or some snacks for the evening sails. No experience is necessary! Captain Larry will gladly share his extensive knowledge. You can take the helm and help trim the sails, or just sunbathe on the bow if that’s your preference. Enjoy taking pictures or peering through the binoculars to see the beautiful osprey diving with their sharp talons to grab a ish to take back to the nest to quiet the peeping chicks. And as you sail out of the Patapsco River onto the Chesapeake Bay, you can see the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the buoy marking the location of where Key penned the Star Spangled Banner. After a great day of sailing, the fun continues with dinner at a local restaurant (separate cost).

Full-day sails are 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Half day sails are 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., or 1:30 – 5:00 p.m.; you can also sign up for the entire day at the full-day price. Our new full-moon cruises will be from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m.; the Bay looks very different at night with lots fewer boats – and no worry about getting sunburned!

Cost: Half- and full-day Bay sails require reservations and advance payment. The cost for the full-day Bay sail and full-moon cruise is $71 for members and $78 for guests. The half-day Bay sail cost is $36 for members and $41 for guests.

Half-Day, All- Day and Full-Moon Bay SailsThe Overnight Sails will be aboard Heron, a 60’-schooner based near Solomons Island, MD. This is the third year we’re

doing overnight sails with Captain Aram, www.schoonerheron.com. Set sail early Saturday afternoon and explore the middle Bay. Then anchor on a picturesque creek for the night. We’ll either cook on board or dingy ashore for dinner (separate cost). After being rocked to sleep aboard Heron, awaken to the sounds of birds on shore. Enjoy breakfast on board before raising the anchor and setting sail for the day returning to the dock in the afternoon.

Cost: Overnight sails also require reservations and advance payment. The cost for the overnight sail is $192 for members and $217 for guests, plus the cost for shared food and beverages on board which will be decided by the trip leader and crew.

For ALL Bay sails, checks should be made payable to SCWDC and must be received by the trip leader at least 15 days prior to the sailing date. Please include your phone number, including a cell phone if available for the day of the sail, and your email address. Approximately a week before the sail, the trip leader will email the directions and information you need for the trip.

Please check the website and Ski-O-Gram, as well as future magazines, for updated information. For more information on the SCWDC sailing program, please contact:Potomac and Overnight Sails - Patty Hagan, 703-742-8137 ([email protected])Half- and Full-Day Bay Sails – Pam Burdick, 301-509-4218 ([email protected])
