2.3. Description
RENK s l ide bear ings ser ies “SC” are the product of a most recent development based on the modular component pr inc i -p le. These modular components can be put together in a l ter-nat ive ways to sui t the specif ic requirements of each bear ing appl icat ion.
They have been specia l ly des igned to car ry radia l loads on-ly. However , smal l axia l loads can be accommodated.
The main appl icat ion f ie lds for th is type of bear ing are the e lect r ic machines, turb ines and fans.
The housing of the SC bear ing is smooth and made f rom a h igh qual i ty cast i ron. Al ternat ive mater ia ls can a lso be sup-pl ied for specia l operat ion condit ions.
The shel ls are manufactured f rom steel and have a spher ica l seat ing. They are l ined wi th RENKmetal therm89.
For normal appl icat ions SC bear ings are f i t ted wi th r ig id seals . Rig id seals have the insulat ion c lass IP 44. Other seal ing systems are avai lab le.
According to the operat ing requirements the “SC” bear ings are suppl ied wi th sel f or forced lubr icat ion.
The self lubr icat ion is mainta ined by loose or f ixed o i l r ings. Star t ing at a bear ing-specif ic speed the o i l r ings car ry lubr i -cant f rom the lubr icat ion sump to the top of the housing.
Loose o i l r ings are made of a copper-zinc a l loy. They del iver the o i l d i rect to the shaf t journal .
Al ternat ive ly, a f ixed o i l r ing and o i l scraper arrangement can be used to t ransfer o i l f rom the sump to the work ing fac-es of the shel l . In case of heavier running condi t ions a forced lubr icat ion may be necessary. RENK AG suppl ies such lubr icat ion uni ts .
To prevent problems f rom electr ica l eddy cur rents, the bear-ings type SC can be e lect r ica l ly insulated, in ternal ly.
Heat generated by the bear ing is usual ly d iss ipated sole ly by radiat ion and convect ion. W ater cool ing can a lso be used through seawater res is tant coolers submerged in the o i l sump. Integrated o i l gu ide p lates improve the ef f ic iency of these coolers.
The bear ings are prepared to insta l l res is tance sensors to moni tor the temperatures.

4.2.4. Eye bolts
When us ing eye bol ts to l i f t parts of the bear ing fo l low the h ints below:
T ighten the eye bol ts in to the tapped holes.
Before moving the bear ing or par ts by the eye bol ts make sure that the screws at the spl i t l ine are t ight -ened, otherwise the bot tom half of the bear ing could become detached.
Make sure that the eye bol ts are not exposed to bend-ing st ress, otherwise the bol ts could break.
NOTE!
When l i f t ing the bearing make sure that the handling e l-ements do not cause damage to attachment parts.
4.3. Corrosion protection
Bear ings suppl ied by RENK AG are not f i l led wi th o i l .
Uncoated metal l ic surfaces (even ins ide) of products sup-pl ied by RENK are protected by Tectyl 511M.
NOTE!
Check the corrosion protect ion f i lm af ter removal of the transport packing. Only an undamaged corrosion protec-t ion f i lm protects against corrosion.
Bear ings suppl ied by RENK AG are protected against cor ro-s ion for a per iod of twelve months i f stored as wr i t ten below.
4.3.1. Storage
Store the RENK bear ings in dry and moderate ly heated rooms only.
RENK AG advises against storing sl ide bearings out-doors.
Store the radia l bear ings only in thei r in tended mount-ing posit ion.
Make sure that radia l bear ings rest mot ionless.
To store the bear ings for a longer per iod than twelve month specia l re-protect ion works are necessary. For detai ls p lease contact our Service Depar tment.

4.3.1.1 Corrosion protect ion of mounted bearings
I f you want to protect the bear ing mounted on an insta l la t ion against cor ros ion proceed as fo l lows:
Dismant le the bear ing.
Clean the bear ing.
Paint or spray the top hal f , the bot tom hal f of the shel l and the shaf t wi th Tectyl 511M.
Re-assemble the bear ing.
Close a l l connect ion holes wi th screw plugs.
Seal the gaps between:
shaf t seal and housing
shaf t seal and shaf t by us ing a self -adhesive, permanent tape.
Remove the top s ight g lass and spray the ant icor ros ive in to the bear ing.
Put a bag of des iccant (s i l icate gel) ins ide. The desic-cant absorbs the humidi ty and prevents the format ion of condensat ion water ins ide the bear ing.
Close the bear ing.
4.3.1.2 In case the standsti l l period is longer than 1/2 year:
Repeat the preservat ion procedures.
Put a new bag of des iccant in to the bear ing.
4.3.1.3 In case the standsti l l period lasts more years:
Dismant le the bear ing shel ls .
Preserve and store the bear ing parts.
4.3.2. Hints to the corrosion preservative

4.3.2.1 Coat ing the metal l ic surfaces
Par ts of the RENK AG may be coated wi th Tectyl 511M by brush-paint ing, d ip-paint ing and by spraying . The surfaces have to be c lean and f ree of lubr icants.
4.3.2.2 Removal of the protection f i lm
Tectyl 511M may be removed easi ly by whi te spi r i t , kero-sene, d iesel fuel or s imi lar so lvents.
Also poss ib le is the removal by a lka l ine s t ream c leaning sys-tems. W hen us ing th is method the par ts must be dr ied immi-nent ly, the c leaning f lu id should conta in an ant i -corros ive addi t ive.
NOTE!
RENK recommends removing the conservat ion pr ior to instal lat ion. Dir t part icles may sett le in the protect ive f i lm during packing and transportat ion which would possibly af fect the operational safety.

6.5. Lubricant change
WARNING!
Oil is f lammable. Consider the f ire hazard.
During a f i l l ing or a draining procedure make sure the lubricants do not contaminate the environment.
6.5.1. Check of the lubricant level
Bear ings type “SC” are suppl ied wi th lubr icant level ind icators, normal ly o i l s ight g lasses (Fig . 16) .
On customer requirement other lubr i -cant level gauges l ike the level ind ica-tor (F ig . 17), e lect r ica l or e lect ronical ly leve l measure systems are avai lab le. Addi t ional in format ion to e lectr ica l or e lect ronical ly level swi tches is g iven in the appendix .
Dur ing operat ion the rotat ing shaf t to-gether wi th the o i l r ings (or the o i l f low at the connect ions of an external lubr i -cat ion uni t ) generate an in ternal o i l f low ins ide the bear ing.
This resul ts in considerable f luctuat ions of the o i l level .
NOTE!
Check the oi l level i f the shaft is not rotat ing and the bearing is standing plain.
During operat ion the internal oi l f low may result in false information about the lubricant level .
General ly the viscos i ty ( ISO VG 46) of the lubr icant is shown at the type plate of the bear ing.

SC.L. Too much lubricant could slowdown the oi l r ings con-siderably; this leads to less lubricat ion and damages the bearing.
Re-mount the cover (10).
Check the o i l level again before star ing the tota l uni t .
6.6. Selection of lubricants
For the lubr icat ion of RENK bear ings we recommend mineral o i ls of ISO-VG viscosi ty c lass i f ied acc. DIN 51517, par t 2 (Circulat ing o i l CL) and DIN 51524, par t 1 (Hydraul ic lube HL)
The use of lubr icants conta in ing EP addi t ives ( l ike CPL and HLP) is not a l lowed. Such lubr icants can lead to unwanted deposi ts on the s l ide faces of the bear ings and consequent ly to damages.
SAE c lass i f ied mineral-o i ls for eng ines are a lso a l lowed for use wi th RENK bear ings.
Synthet ic lubr icants are not general ly recommended for RENK bear ings. In such a case p lease contact our service depar tment.

RENK bear ings have a long operat ion t ime wi thout any d is-rupt ions. However , should there be a problem, th is chapter of fers informat ion on how to order spare parts .
10.2. Spare parts ordering
Spare par ts must sat isfy the technical requirements st ipu lat -ed by RENK . Or ig inal spares suppl ied by RENK a lways meet these demands.
Please submit your spare par ts orders in wr i t ing . In urgent cases, the order can a lso be p laced via phone, te legraph or fax. However , such orders must be conf i rmed in wr i t ing wi th-out delay.
Please send your spare parts order to RENK agency located in your area or send i t d i rect ly to our main of f ices.
Spares orders should speci fy the fol lowing detai ls:
the order number
the type of the bear ing
This informat ion is g iven on the type plate at tached to each product .
the i tem number
the exact des ignat ion of the spare part
the ID – Code
This informat ion is inc luded in the parts l ist .
the required spare par ts quant i ty
the type of sh ipment des ired (e.g . by express, f re ight , a i r f re ight , messenger etc .)

Pre-lubrication Device
RENK bear ings, designed for hor izonta l shaf t l ines, may operate wi th sel f lubr i -cat ion by o i l r ings or forced lubr icat ion by lubr icat ion uni ts .
The lubr icat ion of se l f - lubr icated bear-ings depends on the speed, among others. W hen star t ing the operat ion the lubr icant is concent rated in the o i l sump. Especia l ly dur ing operat ions be-low the t rans i t ion speed ( turn ing or set -t ing mode) no lubr icant is convoyed to the s l id ing surfaces, the wear increas-es. To prevent th is r isk and to reduce the f r ic t ion a pre-lubr icat ion device is mounted la tera l to the bear ing .
Use the pre- lubr icat ion uni t before operat ion
Pump lubr icant in to the o i l pockets of the shel l .
The o i l pockets are now f i l led wi th lubr icant and supply the s l id ing surfaces of the bear ing temporary wi th lubr icant .
