    Committee is experienc-

    ing several firsts this

    year, beginning with the

    selection of a woman to

    head the group.

    Ive been on the com-

    mittee for four years and

    worked very har d,

    Chairman Cheryl Furdos

    said. They nominated

    me and I accepted.On Saturday, Nov. 9,

    ing from planning a pa-

    rade to being in one.

    Furdos said members

    will be carrying a ban-

    themselves, the citys

    Memorial Day Parade

    Committee is looking

    for residents to help

    them choose the 2014

    grand marshal.

    The decision to seek

    nominees for the grand

    marshal post was based

    on the committees de-

    sire to give those who

    have served but have re-

    mained silent about

    their dedication a

    chance to lead the pa-

    rade.

    We wanted to provide

    the opportunity to open

    up the selection process

    to the community, she

    said.

    sung heroes out there

To shore things up, at the suggestion of City Manager Phil Ludos, any signrequests will now be handled by the community development and inspection

    department.

Prior to councils change Monday, Oct. 7, residents and business owners re-

questing temporary, grand opening and sign arbitration appeals were han-

dled by the city clerks office. All other requests went to CDI.

Ludos made the suggestion so were not sending people to two or three

places before they can get the sign.

Councilman Tony Tiseoexpressed concern aboutCDI handling requestsas quickly and efficient-ly as City Clerk Mary

Rehabilitating foreclosed properties purchased by the city isnt sup-posed to be a money-making venture its a way to improve neigh-borhoods and keep slum lords at bay, city officials say.

In 2012, the city purchased 14 houses through the Macomb Countytax foreclosure program and demolished four.

Work is finally complete at 21601 Bayside purchased for $19,980and currently listed for $149,900. The $80,000 rehab budget includesa new kitchen, HVAC system, roof, electrical rewiring and completerenovation of the kitchen and main floor bathroom.

A $152,000 offer for the house, appraised for $128,000, was accept-ed by city council Monday. The offer, submitted by a current St. ClairShores resident, is contingent on the sale of his current house whichis expected to close Nov. 20. Three offers were submitted.

A new garage was added to the 54-by-201 lot along with a newdriveway and patio slab. Other upgrades include refinished hard-

wood floors, basement repairs and corrections to the handiworkdone by the previous owner.Councilman Chris Vitale, who sits on the mayor-appointed sub-

committee to oversee rehab projects along with Councilman TonyTiseo, City Manager Phil Ludos and Community Development andInspection Director Chris Rayes, opened up the house to the St. ClairShores Connection to view the results.

I would buy this house, Vitale said, proudly standing on the newfront porch.

Neighbor Dan Bigelow is just as pleased. Its come from tear it down to what it is today, the four-year resi-

dent said, adding he had been inside the house prior to the city pur-chasing it.

Of neighborhood inconvenience during construction, Bigelow saidhe cant complain in the least.

He was contemplating attending an open house scheduled lastSunday to take a look inside.

Vitale said an open house is now a requirement for all city-ownedproperties undergoing rehabilitation.

Next on the docket is a house on Deizel just about ready for themarket. For photos and story, stay tuned to the St. Clair ShoresConnection.

Students from LakeShore High School joinedexchange students fromChina and Germany forthe districts fourth annu-al International Summitat the TaylorInternational School.

The event brought to-gether students for a dayof learning, conversationand fun, AssistantSuperintendent DonaldKling said.

Its really a way forthese students to get to-gether and talk, he said.Talk about the differenc-es in cultures and thesimilarities.

A question-and-answersession, along with otherorganized activities,

helped encourage dia-logue, while tours of thedormitory and lunch fea-turing dishes from allthree countries were alsopart of the days activi-ties.

This is something thatthe students really enjoy,Kling said. They have somany differences cultur-ally, sure, but ultimatelytheyre still kids. Theresa lot of common groundthere and that comes outquickly. Before too longtheyre having thesegreat conversations withone another and reallyhaving a good time.

In years past, the sum-mit concluded after just

a half day, but this yearsevent stretched nearlythe entire school day.

Its something the stu-dents wanted to hap-

pen, Kling said. We gottheir feedback from last

year and that was onething that we heard a lot, that it didnt last longenough. So, this year weextended the time to justabout an entire schoolday.

Like last year, thisyears summit broughttogether students fromthe districts three cul-

tures Germany, Chinaand the United States.

Kling says the district iscurrently working onadding Spain to the ros-ter of exchange studentscoming to Lake Shore, and in the near futurethey may also be part ofthe International Summitevent.

Teens interested in tak-ing up to 20 trips to theslopes this season can jointhe St. Clair Shores Skiand Snow Boarding Club.

The club, open to all stu-dents in grades six-12,heads to Mt. Holly everyFriday, weather and condi-tions permitting, at 4 p.m.and returns at midnight.Membership includestransportation on a charter

bus, which leaves St. ClairShores Civic Arena, thefirst ski or snow board les-son, supervision and otherperks for $180 a season, according to longtimechaperone Mike Fremont.

The club averages 10trips per season and offersdiscounted lift tickets andrental equipment.

Fremont said severalamenities set this clubapart from the typicalschool club. First, he said, schools typically offer four

to five trips and return by10 p.m. The St. ClairShores club takes up to 20trips and doesnt leave theslopes until 11 p.m.

Its nice when the otherschool clubs leave. Weve

got the hill to ourselves,Fremont said.

Another bonus is thecharter buses have a rest-room facility and somehave DVD players, allow-ing club members to watcha movie during the esti-mated one-hour ride.

Parents also get a re-duced rate if they tag alongin their own vehicles,Fremont said.

Those that already knowhow to ski are required to

demonstrate their skills toMt. Holly personnel andare told which hills theycan use.

We dont do any of theteaching, Fremont said, adding the club is open tobeginners and experi-enced skiers and snowboarders.

The first trip can be asearly as the second Fridayin December.

If theres snow andMount Hollys open, weregoing, Fremont said.

Another advantage tothe club is theres no mini-mum participation re-quired. The bus is paid forand goes regardless of thenumber of people that signup for a particular trip.

Fremont also suggestsclub memberships be giv-en for holiday gifts.

It can be a tough sell tothe parents that haventskied, but those that havethey see its a good deal,he said.

Were trying to getthem out for exercise otherthan just exercising theirthumbs, he quipped.

Being a member of theclub is also a right of pas-sage for teens, he said.

We dont hear fromthem unless someone getsin trouble, he said. They

are pretty much on theirown, but they must stay

within the facility.Members are allowed to

pack a lunch or snacks, but cannot eat on the bus.For those that prefer topurchase food or drinks,Fremont said there areplenty of opportunities atMount Holly. A meal, hesaid, can be purchased forabout $10.

If the club gets enoughparticipants, Fremont

would like to hold a ski

swap among memberswho can either sell or do-nate their used outgrownequipment. He also saidMount Holly holds its own, typically in November.

For more informationabout the club, call GarySopfe, ski club coordina-tor, at (586) 445-5350.

Te departure o warm weathercauses certain skin conditions tofourish. One such condition iskeratosis pilaris, or KP.Aecting mostly teenagersand young adults, KP is a verycommon and harmless condition.KP presents as small bumps thathave a dry sandpaper eeling.

Tey can be red or brownish incolor. Upper arms, cheeks andthighs are the most requentsites or the condition. While thecondition may also be present inbabies and persist into adult lie, keratosis pilaris is uncommon inelderly people.Keratosis pilaris is caused by

tiny skin plugs which block hairopenings, orming a horny plugo the hair ollicle. Tis also

widens the pores making themappear more obvious.Keratosis pilaris tends to be

more severe and can sometimesitch during the winter monthsor other times o low humidity

when skin dries out. However, it

can persist throughout the year.KP is not curable and

treatment o KP is not necessary.Moisturizers may help withthe dryness and associated itch.

opical prescription creamsmay also be recommended by

your dermatologist. Exoliationwith an exoliating cloth orClarisonic body brush may alsohelp minimize the appearanceo the bumps. Phones swiped

    Police are looking for

    the person or persons re-

    sponsible for throwing a

    cinder block through the

    glass front door of the

    T-Mobile store on 9 Mile

    and stealing 3 iPhones

    Saturday, Oct. 20, at about

    4:10 a.m.

    Upon investigating the

    burglary, police found

    shattered glass both in-

    side and outside the door.

    Once inside, muddy foot-

    prints were spotted near

    the Apple iPhone display

    case, the arm that holds

    the phones was broken

    and the phones missing.

    A chunk of cinder

    block, of which police

    suspect was used to break

the front door, was on top

    of the display case.

    The store manager was

    contacted and she noted

    the cash registers and

    some cabinets had been

    rummaged but nothing

    was missing other than

    the three phones.

    Surveillance cameras

    were on the property and

    copies of which are being

    sent to the police depart-

    ment for review.

    A 29-year-old Roseville

    woman imprisoned at the

    St. Clair Shores Police

    Department made a run

    for it after completing a

    visit to the restroom.

    The woman, held on a

    warrant from 40th

    District Court on a third

    degree home invasion

    charge, requested a more

private area to addresspersonal needs and broke

    away from a police officer

    escorting her back to her

    cell. The woman headed

out the west entry door of

    the police department

    and into the parking lot.

    The officer gave chase,

    assisted by a sergeant and

    another officer working at

    the front desk.

    The woman headed

    southbound into an area

    off the parking lot sur-

    rounded by a privacy

    fence. As she began to

    climb it, one officer

    grabbed her around the

    waist and another

    grabbed her leg and wres-

    tled her to the ground.

    The woman tucked her

    arms underneath her to

    avoid being handcuffed.

    One officer hit her in

the back of her arm with

    a closed fist once or

    twice and the woman re-

    lented. She was hand-

    cuffed and returned to

    her cell.

    pushed out of the get-

    away car after he and

    three other black males

    attempted to steal the

tires off a Cadillac CTS in

the Don Gooley lot on 9

    Mile.A security guard con-

    tacted police a 8:13 p.m.

    Saturday Oct. 20, report-

    ing four men were at-

    tempting to steal the

    tires. The men, wearing

    ski masks and gloves,

    tried to escape under a

    chain link fence later dis-

    covered to have been de-

    tached from a post, al-

    lowing the suspects to ex-

it to a silver Chrysler mini

    van.

    As the vehicle headed

    northbound through the

    parking lot, the

    Southfield man was

    ejected from the mini

    van, which continued

    west on Nine Mile.

    The Southfield man

    ran across 9 Mile toward

    the Bow Wow Dog

    Resort. An officer giving

    chase on foot found a

    black ski mask in the

    Dumpster behind the

    business.

    Shortly thereafter, an

    employee at the Mobil gas

station at the corner of 9

    Mile and I-94 called police

    to report a man meeting

    the suspects description

    and sweating profusely,

    saying he was jacked,

    asking for directions to

    Detroit.

    The man was later

    found and arrested while

walking along the I-94shoulder near Shady

    Lane.

    Officers on the scene at

    the car dealership found

    lug nuts and cement

    blocks on which the vehi-

cle was raised. A car jack

    was also found.

    A surveillance tape of

    the dealership is being

    handed over to police.

    Police are seeking in-

    formation on the three

    other suspects.

There are things a pro-fessional is able to do to re-store the not-too-faded im-ages, but, once the photosimages have faded beyondrecognition, there is no

way to bring them back,he said.

The photographic pro-cess, from the camera topaper, has improved tre-mendously since the late

18th century when pho-tography began, thoughthe general principle re-mains the same, he contin-ued. Treating the photos,

whether on paper or digi-tal, should be done withthought.

Keeping photos out ofdirect sunlight and usinghigh quality glass in frontof framed photos is a wayto preserve memories.Protecting it does costmore with the UV protec-tion built in (the glass), hesaid.

The best way to pre-serve images is to create aCD, store it on a hard drive

and have a backup, just asa precaution because, hesaid, everything has thepotential to loose data.

So it is with Oliver. Hehas the images but little

written data for his motherwho was born in 1891 inCincinnati. In 1905, her fa-ther moved the family toDetroit to build a smallfactory and 20 houses forhis employees in Delray atthe intersection of VossStreet and West Jefferson.Growing up, the Vosssplaymates were the Strohand Ford children.
