We’re back!

How it works

VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS:

We have adapted some of our workshops and talks to create exciting new virtual workshops. We will bring all the excitement and fun to your classroom through the wonders of technology in these fully interactive and engaging sessions.

OUTREACH:

Let us come to you, removing the stress of planning a school trip. We have workshops for all ages, delivered by our experienced staff in your classroom.

SELF-LED TRAILS:

There are 11 new galleries to explore with our self-led trails on subjects from history, science, PSHCE and design. Student entry tickets allow

you to tick off several subjects in a day’s visit. Trails are downloadable from our website.

BOOKABLE WORKSHOPS:

Top up your students’ knowledge with workshops on curriculum-based themes for an additional charge.

FREE TEACHER VISITS:

Plan your trip in advance by visiting for free with your family.

SEND GroupsSelf-led trail:

BODY BAGS

Grab a bag and make your way around the galleries, hunting for clues in this fun and interactive gallery trail for all SEND groups. This trail is included in the cost of a day ticket for all pre-booked SEND groups.

WHO LOOKS AFTER YOU?

From your sibling to your school nurse, there are so many people that work together to keep you healthy and look after you when you’re sick. Learn about the importance of self care, effective ways to stay healthy, and discover careers in healthcare.

HISTORICAL SKILLS TRAIL

Travel through our 11 galleries, focusing on the use of different source materials and developing historical enquiry skills along the way.

DISEASE STREET TOUR

Take an interactive tour through our Victorian slum street with our costumed guide and see for yourself how difficult it was to avoid the hazards and stay healthy. Also available as a virtual workshop.

KS4Self-led trails:

PUBLIC HEALTH

Enter our galleries and tread the ever-changing path of public health. Ideal for those focusing on public health through the ages. Travel back through time to meet key figures in the fight against disease and learn how its history can help us inform the very current issues we face today.

PAIN, PUS AND BLOOD

A gruesome and intriguing trail that follows the three main problems in the history of medicine - pain, infection and blood loss. From pre-anaesthetic horrors in our Victorian Operating Theatre to the literal ‘Cutting Edge’ of modern surgery, this trail is perfect for highlighting the key points in history that helped medicine develop to where it is now.

INNOVATIONS

Focusing on the history of the Thackray medical supply company, this trail takes you on a journey of medical invention, looking at how

we’ve overcome medical challenges in the past and how medical engineers are helping to find solutions to modern-day problems.

MICROORGANISMS

What makes us ill? Venture through Disease Street and see exactly what microorganisms can do to a population! Then enter our Disease Detectives gallery and uncover the big names of

Germ Theory. Finally, the trail ends in our Response to Crisis gallery, complete with a seventies-style STI clinic and information about the impact of epidemics throughout history.

Workshops:

WW1: UNKNOWN HEROES

Hone your skills as a historian in this hands-on workshop. Interrogate sources and put your techniques to the test using real museum objects to reveal the history of WW1 medicine. Also available as an outreach session.

Based in our Victorian Operating Theatre, get hands-on with our historical surgical collection,

£200 per group. Max 36 to a group. Book two workshops in one day and get one half price. Due to COVID-19, we ask that you ring to enquire about our policy on large groups.

Students must be provided with school or museum self-led trails before entering the galleries.

Lunch spaces will be provided on a first come, first serve basis and limited coach parking is available; please enquire when making a booking.

Does history always move in a straight line? Is innovation always straightforward? This engaging talk uses events and changes throughout medical history to consider the past, present and future of medicine. Also available as an outreach session or a virtual workshop.

IT’S JUST ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER

Chronological workshop – from major discoveries to advancements in public health, this hands-on workshop is designed to help you effectively place events in medical history to understand just how far we’ve come. A great introduction to Medicine Through Time, this session also works well as a tool for revision. Also available as an outreach session.

MEDICAL INNOVATIONS

Creativity and transformation are in your hands as you consider contemporary challenges and draw inspiration from the story of the Thackray Medical Supplies Company. Take part in our medical-themed design challenge and pit yourself against your classmates in this fun and fully interactive session.

BELOW THE BELT

A workshop essential, designed to meet the needs of the new Relationship and Sex Education curriculum. This engaging workshop encourages honest and frank discussion as students learn about sexual health of the past and what this means for their future.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE HIGHLIGHTS

Based on the BTEC qualification, this museum trail focuses on Human Lifespan Development, careers in the healthcare sector and elements of public health.

A-LEVEL PUBLIC HEALTH HISTORY

Discover how far public health has come, from laissez-faire to enforced vaccination! Finishing in our debate space, this trail truly gives your students food for thought when considering developments in public health, past and future.
