The Script N Student and Staff Recognition, through which recipients are commended for behavior in keeping with Newark High School’s core values program, is being expanded. Simply put, it rewards behavior that exemplifies the familiar saying “Your character is who you are when no one is looking.” One way NHS Principal Tom Roote hopes to expand awareness of and participation in the program is by reaching out to area businesses where students are employed or frequent and ask owner/managers to consider filling out a citation form when they observe noteworthy behavior by high schoolers.

Electronic forms, that are on the Newark Central School District website, can be accessed here: http://www.newarkcsd.org//cms/module/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=215 So far, Roote has visited these Newark businesses and explained the initiative: Wegmans, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Mark’s Pizzeria, Dunkin Donuts and Tim Hortons.

“The intent is to increase dialog between our school and community concerning desired behavior of young adults _ and together we will share in celebrating these values,’’ Roote said. Another key element being added to “increase the recognition program footprint” is that a Script N Search team, made up of student and staff volunteers, will attend some high profile school events _ the first of which will be the NHS

Homecoming Weekend varsity football game September 26th.

There, the Script N Search team will be looking to identify students and staff exemplifying school values.

At half time, Roote, speaking over the public address system, will explain the program and introduce Script N Search team members who will be wearing bright colored vests.

The Script N Student and Staff Recognition Program, begun in March 2013, is designed so that recipients receive not just a citation at quarterly morning recognition ceremonies, but three levels of awards.Level III awards are stars. • A bronze, silver or gold star with a gold letter “R” signifying respectfulness. • A bronze, silver or gold star with the gold letter “E” on it signifying responsibility. • A bronze, silver or gold star with the gold letter “D” on it signifying trustworthiness. • A bronze, silver or gold star with the gold letter “S” on it signifying safety. A Level II award is a chenille Script “N”. A Level III award is a varsity letterman jacket. Students and staff must earn all of the level III awards before being considered for a level II award. Since only one Level I award will be given annually, Roote says this award will require “careful analysis” of eligible candidates by the scholarship committee that meets every Spring.
