    Vibration- and Shock-Proof –Maintenance-Free

The vibration-proof properties ofCAGE CLAMP® connections have beentested and verified in a vibration test toIEC/EN 60068-2-6. In this test, a fre-quency band up to 2000Hz, at differentaccelerations up to 20g and differentamplitudes up to 20mm, is passedcontinuously in three axes. Additionally, international authorities have placedextremely demanding requirements onelectrical installations. Railway authori-

ties have applied testing for electricalinstallations in rolling stock (IEC/EN61373); multiple marine agencies(e.g., GL, LR and DNV) have also heldCAGE CLAMP® to their lofty approvalstandards. Each rigorous test was suc-cessfully passed.

In the Impact Test (IEC/EN 60068-2-27) or for railway applications (IEC/EN61373), test specimens were exposedto instant shock stresses, instead of

permanent vibrations. Stresses up to100g on the x-, y- and z-axis were eas-ily passed.

Maintenance-free operation resultsfrom excellent long-term consistency ofthe electrical and mechanical propertiesof the clamping connection – or moreprecisely, the clamping unit. The Volt-age Drop Test evaluates clamping unitquality under stresses such as vibrations, temperature changes and corrosiveinfluences, in order to verify that thecontact point is gas-tight. The long-termconsistency of CAGE CLAMP® technolo-gy has been demonstrated both throughlaboratory testing by internationalapproval agencies and from worldwideapplications. The resulting maintenance-free opera-tion reduces service costs, leading togreater equipment availability andreliability.

A number of VDE directives mandateor recommend that only one conduc-tor should or must be connected perclamping unit (e.g., DIN VDE 0611,Part 4, 02.91, Section 3.1.9).WAGO complies with this safetyrequirement, as expressed in the cor-responding directives.

Technical and economical benefitsfor the users:

    •Each conductor is clamped indepen-dently.

•Any combination of conductor crosssection can be reliably connectedper potential.

•Where re-wiring is required, only theconductor to be changed is removedfrom the clamping unit, all other con-ductors remain safely clamped.

•The arrangement of more than two

clamping units on one current barpermits potential multiplication, with-out jumpers or additional terminalblocks.

    CAGE CLAMP® and CAGE CLAMP®Sclamp all copper conductors from0.08 mm2 to 35 mm2 (28 - 2 AWG)(95 mm2 (4/0 AWG)), or from0.25 mm2 to 25 mm2 (22 - 4 AWG).Splice protection is not required, butpossible.

The conductor is pressed againstthe current bar in the predefinedcontact area, without damage. Theclamping force adjusts automaticallyto the conductor size. Dynamic contactcompensates for changes/movementof the conductor to eliminate the risk ofa loose connection.

CAGE CLAMP® clamps one conductor per clamping unit.

Gastight Clamping Units –Measurable Contact Quality

Long-term consistency for the low con-tact resistance of both CAGE CLAMP® and CAGE CLAMP®S results fromgastight clamping units. The springclamp (acid- and saltwater-proofCrNi spring steel) presses the connectedconductor against the current bar (elec-trolyte copper with lead-free, pure tincoating) within a defined contact zone. The conductor is embedded into thesoft tin layer with high contact pressure, securing it against corrosive infiltration.

    The contact pressure

exerted by CAGE CLAMP® terminationsis similar to screw-style terminals.

The Temperature-Rise Test examines the clamping unit, includingthe surrounding insulation, at rated

    current, over-current and short-circuitcurrent levels.

The following test proceduresare ideal for evaluating clampingunit quality:

The Voltage Drop Test evaluatesclamping unit quality under stressessuch as vibrations, temperature changes

    and corrosive influences.

Test arrangement: “Voltage Drop Test” Test arrangement: “Temperature-Rise Test”

Climatic chambers simulate standardatmospheres that could impact long-term constancy of clamping units. All WAGO products meet requirementsfor the following environmental tests:

    •Temperature Cycling Test toIEC/EN 60947-7-1,IEC/EN 60998-2-2

    •Industrial Atmospheres toEN ISO 6988,IEC/EN 60068-2-42,IEC/EN 60068-2-60

In 1951, WAGO was established withthe trailblazing notion of clamping elec-trical conductors via spring force, ratherthan a conventional screw mechanism.Today, more than 60 years later,WAGO is the globally recognizedleader in Spring Pressure ConnectionTechnology.

Since revolutionizing the market in 1977,WAGO‘s CAGE CLAMP®-equippedproducts have proven themselves incountless electrical and electronicapplications worldwide. Technologicalprowess and sound engineering haveenabled WAGO products to earn allvital international approvals.
