• Spot blotch of wheat caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana, is one of the major cereal disease in warmer and humid wheat growing regions of the world.

• Epidemic-------observed in Indian Punjab with the dominant pathogen Bipolaris sorokinianafollowed by Fusarium spp. ((Mahto et al., 2002).

• Epidemic------- Abnormal weather conditions

including high moisture and temperature

Bipolaris sorokiniana(Major fungus in Pakistan)

• Seed and soil borne pathogen affects the seed germination and seedling emergence.

– Seedling blight – Root rot – Spot blotch.

(Bhatti et al., 1986; Hafiz, 1986; Kishwar et al., 1992; Iftikhar et al., 2006).

Yield Losses

• 27% -- 56.6 % (1998-99) in north eastern and north western plains of India (Satvinder et al. (2002)

• Up to 15% on several farms over a number of years in Bangladesh (Alam et al., 1994)

• Up to 23.8% in Nepal (Shrestha et al., 1997)

How we manage the Disease and Increase the productivity

• The best, cheapest, environment friendly and the easiest way of

managing the disease and increasing the productivity.

In-vitro screening

• The inoculum of B. sorokiniana raised from single spore culture of the most aggressive isolate on PDA.

• Seeds of sixty nine commercial varieties (2008-09)& seventy one (during 2009-10) were tested by cotton swab method (Iftikhar et al., 2008)

• By using 5 mm of inoculum disc containing 3.2 x 104.spores/ disc .

• Aafter inoculation, tubes incubated in growth chamber at 25oC for 25-28 days.

• 0-5 scale:

• 0 = no symptoms• 1 = 1-5 % spots on leaves• 2 = 6-20 % spots on leaves• 3 = 21 – 40 % spots on leaves• 4 = 41 - 60 % spots on leaves• 5 = more than 60 %

– (IRRI, 1996).

Data classified into following categories: 0= resistant (R)1-2 = moderately resistant (MR)3-4 = moderately susceptible (MS)5= susceptible (S)

In-vivo screening• Seventy two commercial wheat varieties (2008-09) and

(2009-10) were screened in the field of NARC, Islamabad by

artificial inoculations.

• Material was planted in randomized block design manner with 1m row having 30 cm row to row distance.

• Three to four days before head initiation inoculum (3.4 x 10 4 conidia/ ml) was sprayed thoroughly by automizer on each variety.

• Irrigated just after inoculation.

• At maturity data was recorded on double digit scale (0-9).

CONCLUSION

• 2 years study under controlled and fieldconditions, ten varieties including Chakwal 86,Zarghoon, Tandojam83, Bahawalpure 97,Kohistan 97, Rohtas 90, Takbeer, AS 2002,Auqab and Saussi may be recommended forfurther exploitation as having moderateresistance at seedling stage(controlledconditions) and adult plant resistance under fieldconditions.
