Let’s Have Some Fun!

Welcome to the March Premier issue. Don’t the colors in this month’s kit make you want to run out and play or go fly a kite? I hope you have some kid photos to scrap—your own, your grandkids, your neices and nephews, or even a neighbor child. As you’ll see, though, I scrapped my 21 year-old daughter, and the colors, papers, and elements were perfect!

Layered Templates—Update

We again have layered templates for you this month. I’ve been reading in the forum that you’re enjoying the flexibility of layers and that, after the first time of figuring out how to use them, the page was almost magical as you put it together.

That’s exactly how I reacted the first time I put a layered template together. Wow! It was fun to see the page spring to life as I dragged the layers onto my layout in proper order.

You’ll notice that we included a jpeg image of the templates this time so you don’t have to guess what’s in each folder.

Simply look at the jpeg, decide which template you want to use, and note the number on the template. That number will correspond with the number on the template folder, making it easy for you to open the correct folder.

Download How-To Videos

Many of you have been trying to download the videos on how to use and resize the templates. I’m sorry it’s been so difficult for some of you to watch them online. I’ll make them available as a download in the near future when I can get to it. We will continue to have them available for viewing online as well.

Introducing a New Instructor

This issue aims to help you take your imagination a step higher. To help you with that, we’ve asked Andrea Graves, a Creative Team member for Shabby Princess and Little Dreamer Designs to teach our design video. I know you’ll enjoy her teaching.

Happy scrappin’!

I love seeing what you do with the kit AND with my video tutorials each month! Some of the pages featured below show off the funky filter, the rays of light, and the circle of love video techniques so beautifully, but there are many more to see in the gallery.

I chose this elegantly simple page by jschardt as my Top Pick this month. I’m a sucker for outstanding photography, and this certainly has an amazing photo as the centerpiece. Can you believe the little yawn and the tender look on Dad? So sweet and gentle!

The photo strip and cluster of elements, as well as the understated background put the crowning touch on this fabulous page. Thanks for sharing your page with us, jschard!

Here’s what jschard had to say:

“Sweet Nicholas. . .Daddy’s love for you can not be measured.” This

photo has captured the essence of the tenderness and love that my

son-in-law has displayed for his little baby boy.

Meet our March 2009 Premier Designer:

Eva KiplerHi! My name is Eva Kipler, I am 42 years old and live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with my husband of 17 years. We have three wonderful children, ages 17, 14, and 10, who inspire me and provide me with a seemingly endless amount of creativity and ideas. My husband, who is a U.S. Naval officer, is often deployed overseas (he is currently serving a one year tour in Iraq), so the vast majority of my time is spent with my children and our rambunctious 2 year old goldendoodle dog, Lola. I love to make a bold statement with my designs and it usually comes through in my color choices. I also have a fond addiction (although some people refer to it as an obsession) to anything glittery or sparkly. You will almost always find sequins, glitter, or glistening gems in my kits. Who doesn’t love a bit of bling? My design style is considered to be traditional, as it resembles products you can purchase in paper scrapbooking.

I grew up in Santa Fe, and while a student at New Mexico State University, I joined the United States Navy on a whim for a five year enlistment. I wanted to “see the world” and I certainly did! For over 2 years I was stationed in Wales and then in Scotland for a year. During those years abroad, I traveled at every opportunity I had. Oktoberfest in Germany was one of my favorites! My last duty station was Virginia Beach, Virginia, were I met and married the man of my dreams. In 1993, my enlistment was fulfilled and instead of re-enlisting I decided to return to college to finish my degree. In 1998, I completed my bachelor’s degree in accounting and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I have been a stay at home mom since our last child was born. In my free time I spend quite a bit of time on the computer and on the internet. The discovery of digital scrapbooking was certainly a turning point for me. I am now able to contribute financially to our household while working at home! Being a digital

designer is definitely a “true fit” for me. I have an outlet for my artistic creativity and am here when my children need me. With my husband often deployed, working out of the house makes things so much easier, and the best thing is that I love my work!

Meet our new Tutorial Instructor:

Andrea GravesI’m a stay at home mom, married to the love of my life and have 3 wild little boys ages: 11, 6 and 3. We live 20 minutes from Salt Lake City, Utah, and love it. I started digi-scrapping 2 1/2 years ago and was completely hooked! Before that, I was a die hard traditional scrapbooker for 10 years.

I teach Photoshop Elements locally and have appeared on TV doing a segment on digital scrapbooking. I have also had my layouts published in magazines and newspapers. I love teaching digi-scrapbooking and seeing peoples eyes light up at the possibilities of what they can do - and the endless possibilities digital scrapbooking offers!

I’m thrilled to be on my dream design teams for Shabby Princess, Dream Girl for Little Dreamer Designs and Rachel Young at ScrapArtist. I recently became a semi-pro photographer and have a small studio in my home.

I feel blessed to have digital scrapbooking as a creative outlet and feel it keeps me sane with my 3 busy little boys (whom I adore!) that keep me running ALL the time! LOL! :)

Some other hobbies I have are scuba diving, decorating my house, reading and traveling (I love any beach - warm or cold!). My most favorite thing to do is spend time with my sweet family and wonderful friends. I also enjoy making DVD movies and slide shows for my family and extended family -- which my kids LOVE! I’m thrilled to be here at Scrapper’s Guide! :)

If you’ve wanted to learn more about selections, then this series of videos is for you!

The first technique will be to select a person out of a photo and drop in a different background. Linda doesn’t pick an easy photo either. There’s lots of curly hair to select, but you can do a good job if you follow her tips and techniques.

We’ll tackle a glass bottle next, and then show you how to create custom shadows to go with your imagination figures and props.

Video Tutorials

Page DesignIt’s time for you to set your imagination free and watch it soar! This month’s kit and tutorials will give you the tools you need to design what we call “Imagination Pages.”

Once you’ve cut a figure out of a photo the sky’s the limit! We’ll give you guidelines and examples of what you can do, so show us your stuff!

Whether you want to switch backgrounds or use a cutout figure for an imaginative scrapbook page, selecting hair is often the tricky part of the job. I’ll show you some techniques to create a very good hair selection, and I’ll share my favorite tip for getting rid of the leftover color that often clings to wispy hair.

Butterfly Bottle

by Linda Sattgast

Since our theme this month is Imagination, I’ve created an imagination page with a clear bottle containing butterflies that are escaping. I’ll show you how I created the bottle from a photo and teach you some selection tricks at the same time.

A hot, new trend is to create a fanciful scene or whimsical, dreamy landscape for a figure cut out or extracted from a photo. In this lesson you’ll learn two methods of creating imaginative layouts with elements that almost pop off the page!

Savvy Shadows

by Linda Sattgast

Imaginative pages often require custom shadows. In fact, the shadows you use can make the differ-ence between a good page and one that rocks! So come along as we explore several shadow techniques that can be used over and over in a variety of situations.

Page 16: Scrapper’s Guide Digital Scrapper · I’m a stay at home mom, married to the love of my life and have 3 wild little boys ages: 11, 6 and 3. We live 20 minutes from Salt Lake City,

I thought it would be fun to make a billboard that my daughter would appear to be leaning on. Here’s how I did it.

First I had to photograph the upper and lower parts of her body separately. I had her stand in front of my large piece of white board, though it really

wouldn’t have mattered, since her jeans, torso and toes have hard edges. I ended up using the Lasso tool to select them.

I then photographed Allison with the white board behind her head (very important to make selecting her hair easier) and I had her lean her arms on another piece of white board to simulate her leaning on the billboard.

If you look at my Layers palette you can see the order of my layers: the head and arm shadows are at the top, then the frame, and finally the legs and shadow.

There are lots of possibilities for similar fun poses to make an imagination page!

Extra Tidbits

The making of a billboard

I flipped the image so Allison would appear to be looking at the butterly on the page.
