Introduction

A rigorous engineering education combined with years of practical construction experience is a valuable asset that has proved extremely helpful in forging critical links between project partners in the design and construction business.

The accompanying body of work displays a strong understanding of many different components, construction methods and types, a command of mechanics, sensitivity to architecture, a creative approach and an understanding of the financial implications of design on construction costs.

This is a sampling of the collective work of twenty eight years of broad and varied expertise. During that time my professional engineering practice was developed in tandem with numerous other projects in which I was also the construction manager. The diversity of this work underscores what has been made possible by marrying the pragmatic with theory, architecture and art.

These projects were all crafted with integrity, professionalism, a dedication to the quality of work as well as the ever present awareness of the reputation of the clients that I represent. Of course they were also done with the understanding that I provide a value added service so that others may turn out a quality project. The nature of many of these projects has been challenging and exciting. And so it is with great anticipation I look forward to the next challenge. I hope that it’s yours.

Thank you for your consideration.

Professional Introduction

Professional Registrations

Professional engineer registered in the States of New York and New Jersey practicing structural engineering.

Education:

Clarkson University - 1980 - B.S.C. E. in Civil Engineering

Northeastern University 1982 - M.S.C.E. in structural engineering- majoring in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. Thesis included the design & construction of a small scale shaker table.

Biography Steven Capri, P.E. is a professional engineer with significant practical engineering design and construction experience. After receiving his master’s degree in civil engineering he joined Impell Corporation in 1982 as an engineer working on the structural earthquake dynamic analyses of nuclear power plant structures. In 1984 he moved on to Grumman Aerospace where he was an engineer responsible for structural dynamic modeling and analysis of the A-6, EA6B and F14 aircraft during carrier landing and catapult events. After acquiring his professional engineering license in New York in 1986 Mr. Capri began working for a major structural consulting engineering firm in Manhattan, and subsequently moved on to the construction industry with a small multi-disciplined architectural engineering design-build firm working in multiple roles as structural engineer, project superintendent and project manager. In 1999 he formed his own company, Capri Construction Management, later renamed Capri CD&E - Construction Design & Engineering and he serves as principle to this day. With over 28 years of engineering experience coupled with practical construction experience he has engineered and built numerous commercial, residential and specialty projects, serving a variety of roles as engineer, construction manager and general contractor.

Condominiums & High Rise

20 Pine St. – New York, N.Y.

This site location is at the Chase Manhattan Bank Plaza in downtown New York. In 2007 I was called to work directly for Boymelgreen Developers to take over the shop drawing process for a failing steel subcontractor. I subsequently worked to provide structural steel engineering design, shop drawings and drafting services for a major rework of the steel framing for this 36 floor tower with 6 basement levels. Along with the extensive modifications to the existing structure that was nearly 80 years old was the need to produce the shop drawings in order to quickly move the steel erection along. Working immediately behind demolition crews I provided verification of existing conditions and subsequent on-site engineering for a host of major framing elements, shoring and bracing schemes, curtain wall support systems and miscellaneous metal work.

Renaissance West at 81st St. – New York, NY.

I was the Project Engineer for this 23 story 124 unit condominium tower at 2250 Broadway at 81st Street. This was a reinforced concrete tower with brick cladding. The lower retail floors of the building were married to the stone clad 100 year old 3 story 24,000 sq. ft. Reeves RKO Theatre which was gutted and subsequently rebuilt as prime retail space. The theatre foundation was underpinned and lowered to develop additional retail space in basement. The existing stone veneer of the Theatre was kept while the remaining steel framing shell of the theatre remained and was reinforced. All of the existing wood floor framing and floor was removed & replaced with structural C-joists, decking and concrete.

This unusual configuration consists of a spiral stair contained within a twisted glass cube. The non-planar aspect of the glass on each side of the cube made it challenging to attach it to the corner mullion posts. Combine that with a harsh environment on the water and an attachment to an old house and you have the recipe for an interesting project.

Engineering and the Arts

Introduction

n addition to the traditional body of work that we as structural engineers become involved in there are times when we provide guidance for specialty pieces that are not necessarily built of

beams and columns, concrete and steel. These are works where aluminum, bronze, fiberglass, glass, and composite materials are commonplace. Over the past two decades I have been able to practice a different play on structural engineering - where intuition and creativity are a vital compliment to our “book smarts”.

Design and construction of each of these projects requires a working knowledge of many different materials and methods of construction. Most of these projects are one of a kind and each requires a different perspective than the traditional structural engineering – different ways of seeing and feeling, different ways of determining loads and unique formulations of creative analysis.

As we step into the artist’s world it is important, as with any client, to understand their intention, maintain their creative vision, work within the boundaries of what is practical and cost effective while giving them a sense that engineering and art can and should work hand in hand.

e Cirque 2000 Restaurant – New York, N.Y. I designed these

unusual stainless steel elliptical rings (35 ft. x 18 ft. in plan view) which were interwoven with each other and supported above the bar area by resting on 14 ft. tall torchiere lamps. The lamps were not fastened to the floor. Also did structural design of the torchiere lamps and the bar.

In 2005 we were engaged to provide pre-construction management services for this 30 unit, 40,000 sq. ft., four story project with a budget of $9,000,000. This was a conversion project from industrial to residential use.

Design reviews – ongoing since inception of project. Developed preliminary construction budgets, schedules and projected cash flows. Updated the budget at 25% and 80% completion of bid drawings. Prepared prequalification criteria for bidders, and assembled a list of recommended subcontractors. Developed, prepared and issued bid packages. Conducted pre-bid conferences with approved Subcontractors. Took competitive bids and prepared leveling sheets as a basis of bid comparison. Developed preliminary shoring and bracing schemes in order to retain the integrity of existing
