Who can help? All CAC scouting units/members

What is “Scouting the Census”?A service project where the CAC scouting community can help boost the census participation rates in the Greater Austin Area

When is the service project?July 31st through August 14th

Where can we participate?In your communities and especially virtually through posting to social media

How to participate?Creatively spread the word of the census through signage locally, word of mouth, social groups, and especially through social media platforms (i.e. Tik Tok, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook) using #scoutingthecensus

Why?- Following the scout oath & law of helping others, “Scouting the Census” allows CAC to have an impact in local communities - A service project for all ages in scouting that abides by current social distancing rules- To help those in disadvantaged communities and those who are unaware of the Census be counted

Participation Instructions1. Find ways to promote people to complete the census (especially virtually),

3. Share your posts and like, comment, and share others’ posts

4. Spread the word in you communities

5. Send your total service hours to your commissioner by August 14th, 2020

On August 14th, commissioners will tally up the total service hours by unit/district/council and the Census

Bureau will let us know the impact we made

2020 Participation Methods

2020 Census invitation packets with a census questionnaire were delivered to each housing unit (at their door or in the mail). You can self-respond online, by phone, by mail using the census ID provided in your packet.

• Hold a Census townhall event online

• Create and post TikTok video online

• Tag people in your network and ask if they have already completed their census.

• Ask them to tag 10 more people.

• Post and share one of our PSA videos on your social media platform.

Examples of Virtual Outreach Efforts

• Tell everyone who has not responded by the end of July that a census volunteer

will knock on their door between August 11 and October 31.

o Census volunteer will help them completing the census.

o Ask them to cooperate.

o They can always self-respond online, by phone, or by mail by October 31.

Examples of Safe In-Person Outreach (when appropriate)

• Hold a Parade

o Invite community leaders, local celebrities, sports figures, and fire trucks to

drive through low-responding neighborhoods in an informal parade.

o Grab attention with loud music, honking horns, and megaphones to urge the

neighborhood to respond.

o Consider inviting a church marching band or school drumline to join—while

social distancing—in the parade.

• Ask your faith leader to remind everyone to complete their census.

Examples of Safe In-Person Outreach (when

appropriate)

• Promote census participation in drive-through food banks, COVID-19 testing

sites, unemployment centers, and other locations that provide services to the

public.

• Drop off materials at apartment complexes and other locations to encourage

response.

• Canvass low-responding neighborhoods with census flyers.

• Participate in faith-based gatherings to hand out census materials.
