5* Scottish Tourist Board RatingAs a tourist attraction Scotland’s Secret Bunker draws visitors from near and far and gives visitors the opportunity to explore the depths of the Bunker and discover how Scotland could have been governed during a nuclear attack in the Cold War.

Martyn Dawson, Technical Director for Scotland’s Secret Bunker says: “We have many people visit the Bunker, locally and internationally. Being 100 feet underground the availability of mobile phone signal is non-existent, therefore our visitors often request access to Wi-Fi. Before upgrading to fibre broadband via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology we missed out on 5* visitor attraction status due to our lack of Wi-Fi availability.

“However, since upgrading to Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) the technology within the Bunker has been transformed – and as well as our original telecommunications office from over 40 years ago – we now have Wi-Fi available inside the Bunker, which means that our visitors now have the ability to connect with family and friends on the outside.

“This availability of Wi-Fi will help us increase our visitor attraction status going into the new year where we will be able to apply for a 5* rating, ultimately increasing visitors to the Bunker. As a result of this we have also been able to update aspects of the Bunker to allow for more visitor interaction, supplying photo and social media opportunities.”

Improved Operations

The day-to-day running of the Bunker is extremely important in terms of successful operations. The shop and café within the Bunker are essential aspects of the visitor experience and making payments contactless and improving the services is a major upgrade in the operations.

Martyn says: “Having upgraded to Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) we have been able to upgrade our till systems to allow for easier payment processes and ticket admissions. The speed that we can now process payments has been incredible.

“The results that we have seen since upgrading have been astonishing, its amazing that we are able to access this technology being 100 feet underground. We now get a connection speed of 360 Mbps where before would get, on a good day, 2.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps.
