GENERAL INFORMATION Arrive Early Registration and continental breakfast starts at 8:00 am in the Foyer of the Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) Auditorium. An introductory Welcome starts at 8:50 am. Lectures begin at 9:00 am. Plan to arrive early, especially if it’s your first visit to UCLA. Credit will not be given to at- tendees who are more than 5 minutes late or leave 5 minutes early for a 30 minute course or more than 10 minutes for 1 hour courses. Directions Jules Stein Eye Institute (JSEI) is located east of the 405 freeway between Wilshire & Sunset Blvds on the corner of Westwood Blvd & Le Conte Ave across the street from UCLA Medical Center & Ronald Reagan Hospital/Medical Center. From Wilshire Blvd ; Go north on Westwood. JSEI are the 1st buildings as you enter UCLA cam- pus on the right just past Le Conte. From Sunset Blvd ; Go south on Veteran, left on Gayle, left on Le Conte, left on Westwood. JSEI are the first buildings on the right. Turn right onto Stein Plaza. The building straight ahead is Jules Stein Building. The first building on the right is the Doris Stein Building which houses our workshops (2nd floor in the Med Photo Dept.) & parking. Registration and lectures will be at the RPB Auditorium which is lo- cated between the Jules Stein & Doris Stein buildings. Parking At the Doris Stein building, parking is $12 all day and paid at self-serve machine on your way out. An attended parking lot diagonally across Wilshire/Le Conte intersection is $8.50 all day. 9:00 am – 9:30 am Lecture 1: OCT Anatomy & InterpretationInstructor: Gad Heilweil, MDPrerequisite: Knowledge of basic retinal anatomyLevel: Basic/Intermediate Length: 30 minutes (0.5 CEC)Course Description:This course will familiarize students with normal and abnormal retinal anatomy as viewed in OCT images. Avariety of clinical cases will be discussed. Emphasis will be on differential diagnoses of various retinal diseases and the signifi-cance of good quality images in making a diagnosis.Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Identify layers of the retina in OCT images•Recognize abnormalities while performing OCT scans•Understand common retinal conditions associated with abnormal scans•

9:30 am – 10:00 am Lecture 2: OCT: Imaging Techniques & TipsInstructor: Tamera Schoenholz, CRA, OCT-CPrerequisite: NoneLevel: BasicLength: 30 minutes (0.5 CEC)Course Description: This introductory course will discuss the fundamentals in the operation of SD-OCT’s. Examples of commonscan patterns and analysis will be shown. Challenges in obtaining certain scans and how to overcome them will also be dis-cussed. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Describe the basic capabilities and limitations of SD-OCT•Discuss various aspects of retinal and optic nerve scan analysis•

10:00 am – 11:00 am Lecture 3: Introduction to Ophthalmic Ultrasonography Instructor: Robert AlmanzorPrerequisite: Knowledge of basic ocular anatomyLevel: IntermediateLength: 1 hour (1.0 CEC)Course Description: This comprehensive lecture will focus on basic ultrasound principles and examination techniques. Echo-graphic interpretation will also be presented with the use of case presentations of diagnostic A and B scans, ultrasound biomi-croscopy (UBM) and ultrasound biometry. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Understand the basic principles of ophthalmic ultrasonography•Grasp standardized procedures of an ophthalmic ultrasound exam•Identify basic ocular anatomy, findings, and pathology on ultrasound•

McCannel, MD, PhDPrerequisite: Basic understanding of ocular anatomy Level: Basic/IntermediateLength: 1 hour (1.0 CEC)Course Description: This course will introduce the subspecialty of ophthalmic oncology to the ophthalmic imager. A variety oflesion characteristics and their differential diagnoses will be discussed. Emphasis will be on the variety of imaging modalitiesavailable to help diagnose and document the progression or treatment of these lesions.Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Differentiate between a variety of tumors and lesions of the eye•Know different types of imaging modalities needed to document various lesions•Understand why good quality imaging is helpful and essential in good follow-up care of the patients•

12:15 pm – 1:15 pm Lecture 5: Wide-field Angiography and Autofluorescence Instructor: Pradeep S. Prasad, M.D.Prerequisite: Basic retinal anatomyLevel: IntermediateLength: 1 hour (1.0 CEC)Course Description: This course will familiarize students with the differences between wide-field and standard fluorescein an-giography and autofluorescence. A variety of cases will be discussed to highlight the clinical utility and applications of wide-fieldImaging.. Emphasis will be placed on disease pathology and clinical applications. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Understand the technological differences between wide-field and standard fluorescein angiography and autofluorescence •Describe the clinical utility and application of wide-field imaging for different ocular diseases•

2:15 pm – 3:15 pm Hands-On Workshop 1: Ophthalmic Imaging Workshop 13:15 pm – 4:15 pm Hands-On Workshop 2: Ophthalmic Imaging Workshop 2Workshop Coordinator : Paul Paquette, CRA, COMT, FOPSPrerequisite: Morning lecture series attendance, Consent for dilation of one eye. Level: Basic/Intermediate/AdvancedLength: 1 hour each session (1.0 CEC each session)Course Description: Each one-hour workshop will allow attendees of all levels to get hands-on experience with a variety ofimaging equipment discussed in previous lectures (Standard and Wide angle Fundus Cameras, OCTs, B-scan/UBM,…). Stu-dents will alternate being the operator and the patient in order to experience both sides of each modality. Emphasis will be onimproved technique and quality of images.Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Identify equipment required to obtain different types of imaging modalities•Know when to utilize a variety of filters, magnifications, scan modes, lighting and other equipment features•Identify possible imaging artifacts•Perform advanced techniques for improved image quality•
