Volunteeromg

Volunteer Week 2017 President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week with an executive order in 1974, as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Every sitting U.S. president since Nixon has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week (as have many U.S. mayors and governors). Since then, the original emphasis on celebration has widened; the week has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their communities. Every April, charities, hospitals, and communities recognize volunteers and foster a culture of service. Join your peers nationwide during the 2017 National Healthcare Volunteer Week, April 23-29, in celebrating and recognizing your volunteers' efforts to advance your organization.

Saturday, May 6 Derby Day at the Historic Monte Rio Theater

Join West County Community Services (WCCS) for the 2nd annual Derby Day Fundraising Gala at the historic Rio Theatre in Monte Rio, CA on Saturday May 6 from 12:00 to 4:30 pm. There will be great Southern-inspired food, music, horse rac-es on the big screen, mint juleps, crazy hats and more! Break out your pastel attire and plan for your best hat — prizes will be awarded for ‘best hat in show’. Wage your bets on races shown on the big screen, enjoy great musical entertainment, stroll and sip mint juleps, wine / beer and sweet tea, dine on a southern inspired menu and enjoy other southern treats. Save the date and order your tickets now — this will be a sell out! Advance tickets can be purchased for $75 per person. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket talk to Emily at the Senior Center.

A Bit of Trivia

Your first cousins are the children of your parents’ brothers and sisters; their children are your first cousins once removed; the next generation are your cousins twice re-moved; and so on. Your second cousins are the descendants of your grandparents’ sib-lings, and those cousins’ children are also removed once from you with each succeed-ing generation.

Grasshopper Pie ( by Cal Leskar) (Submitted by Barbara Hoffmann) 16 Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (Oreos) 2 TBS. Butter 24 Marshmallows ½ Cup Milk 3 TBS. Green Crème de Menthe 3 TBS. White Crème de Cacao 1 Cup Whipping Cream Crush cookies into crumbs. Melt butter and blend in. Press mix-ture into 8” pie pan, saving out a small amount to decorate top of pie. Chill Melt marshmallows in milk over hot water in double boiler; let cool. Stir in crème de menthe and crème de cacao. Whip cream and fold in. Pour into prepared pie shell. Sprinkle reserved crumbs over top (I usually form these crumbs into the shape of a long-stemmed cocktail glass on the top of the pie). Refrigerate 2-3 hours before serving

RECIPE CORNER

Pineapple Angel Food Cake (Submitted by Joan Sato)

1 Box of Angel food cake mix 1 large can of Dole Crushed pineapple w/juice Preheat oven 350 degrees

Pour cake mix and canned pineapple with juice into bowl. Mix on medium setting for 2 minutes. Pour in rectangle glass dish (do not grease pan) and bake 28-35 minutes until light golden brown. Use middle rack of oven.

Serve warm with ice cream or by itself. 2" x 2" square is 10-12g of sugar and ok for most diabetic and heart diets.
