What special talent do you have?
Products are composed of materials and materials are composed of matter. Materials differ from each other – they differ in their properties, the products they make, their uses, and the ways on how we can dispose of them.
The properties of materials can be classified into two:• General properties• Special properties Let us study the second property of matter – the Special properties of materials.
SPECIAL PROPERTIES OF
MATERIALS
Group Activity
Activity 1: Materials: bottle of water, sponge, piece of chalk, paper cup, magnet, nail, rubber band, electric wire
Directions:1. Drop a piece of chalk.2. Get a paper cup and fill it with water. Dip the sponge into the water.3. Stretch a rubber band.4. Get a piece of nail and place it near a magnet.5. Observe a wire. Describe it.

Group Reporting• How did you find the
activity?• What did you learn from
the activity?• What are the special
properties of materials in your activity?
• What are the properties of materials that you have observed or learn?• How can you define special properties of materials?
The previous activity that you had pertains to the special properties of matter. Special properties pertain to the unique properties of one phase or kind of matter.
1. Porosity – The ability of a material to hold liquid to a certain extent.
2. Ductility – It allows a solid material to be transformed into wires.
3. Brittleness – A property of solids to be broken into pieces.
4. Elasticity - A property of solids to return to their original shape after being stretched
5. Malleability - A property of solids to be hammered into sheets.
6. Flexibility – The ability of a material to be bent without breaking.
7. Luster – The ability of a material to reflect light.
8. Magnetic – the ability to attract materials made of steel and iron.
9. Electrical – The ability to conduct electricity.
Can you now describe the special properties of materials? What is/are the use/s of special properties of materials to us people?
Why are the special properties
of materials important?
Identify the special property of matter described by each statement below. Write your answer on the space provided before each number.
_____1. Wet piece of cloth._____2. Electric wires connected to a generator._____3. Broken pieces of ceramic._____4. Stretched garter._____5. Rubbed hair comb that attracts pieces of paper.
Assignment:On a short bond
paper, create your own crossword puzzle using the definitions and samples for each special property of matter.
