ALMAASAC Charge #1
ANASAC 16-17 Sept 2013
ASAC Charge #1: Assess the scientific outcomes and impact from Cycle 0. This should include some preliminary quantitative assessments, such as numbers of papers published and quantitative impact metrics, along with a qualitative assessment. Coordinate with the JAO and the regional ARCs, who would collect the necessary information.
– Cycle 0 Paper assessment–Metrics to characterize users– NRAO PR efforts (Blue)– Community outreach efforts

ALMA Results Published• All ALMA papers tracked by NRAO (and ESO)
libraries: https://find.nrao.edu/papers/– 68 papers with 143 citations– h-index: 7 min/max/mean/stddev: 1/19/4/4
• Two components of interest: SV and Cycle 0– SV results: 28 published papers
• 9 from NA, 15 from Eu, 2 from EA, 2 from Other (Mx)– Cycle 0 results: 41 published papers
• 30 from 111 highest ranked projects; one filler (~27% published)• NA: 10 from 31 high ranked projects; 16 papers with NA 1st
author– Eu/EA/CL: 9/33/10, 8/24*/11, 3/9/2
– Some papers contain both components

Proposers to ALMA, Other NRAO telescopes
• Gareth Hunt compared the ALMA and NRAO userbases to determine the increase I to the NRAO userbase provided by access to ALMA.– NRAO: all users since 2008C (3898)– ALMA: Cycle 0, Cycle 1, combined– I=(ALMA+NRAO)/NRAO – 1
• Conclusion is that ALMA has attracted many ‘new’ proposers to the NRAO community– User Base Metric Proposal aims to further
characterize the ALMA community segment4

Proposed User Base Metric (Lonsdale)• How to track users beyond the 10% who respond to our
survey?• Proposed solution: Use library database and ADS to
measure– First publication date for author– Place in authorship list– Type of data presented– Observatories used
• Analysis to illuminate:– Growth of novice user percentage– Success rate in various groups– Repeat proposer percentage– Demographics
• Status: Seeking input and resources

Community Outreach• What is happening with ALMA?
– General Community outreach: • NRAO eNews emailings• ANASAC, User committees, presentations• AAS and other meetings• CDEs
– Static outreach:• NAASC website (general/NA)• Science Portal (general/inclusive)• Project Tracker (PI-specific)
– One-on-one outreach• Helpdesk (Contact Scientist, PI-specific)• Data reduction support
• General Community (EPO) 6
