Transcript of Science Journal – How brain stores-retrieve memory & how much space is there
How much memory our brain can store or how many gb of space is
there in our brain?
How data is stored in hard-drive
Memory saved in brain as circuit of neurons.
When electricity flows through a circuit, we remember the memory associated
with that circuit
100 billion x 1000 links/neuron = 100 trillion= 100 Tb (assuming each link as 1byte)
100 Tb
Complex neuron circuits in brain
As neurons intertwine, number of possible connection exponentially
increases, hence few say, we have many petabyte memory
(1 Pb= 1m Gb)
Data stored in hard-drive as magnetic bits
When we remember an event, brain assemble data
from different region to create a memory similar to
original event
In real Distorted memory
As our memory is recreated on recall, it may differ from real event means our memory may be wrong
Sometimes brain uses same data to recreate similar memories, it doesn’t make duplicate circuits for same kind of event, hence it is hard to find difference between similar
type of memories
IBM Blue Gene/Q super computer simulated 530 billion neurons & 100 trillion synapses in 2012, yet it was 1500 time
slower in processing speed comparing to brain
Our brain recreates memory from bits and pieces on-the-fly, same kind of memories are assigned common circuit, no
duplication, only important details needed to recreation is saved, not pixel by pixel, bit by bit (as PC saves data),hence
memory isn’t vivid and accurate but this mechanism gives us virtually unlimited storing opportunity
Forgotten long term memory can be retrieved using
hypnosis, so they are not destroyed, we just lose retrieval cue because of
change in synapses
