Science in sportEquipment

The development of new materials means many sports benefit from lighter, stronger and more durable equipment.

Polymers and alloys such as kevlar, fibreglass and titanium are used to make rackets in place of the original wooden ones.

Pole vaulters originally used bamboo poles! Now fibreglass or carbon fibre.

Cricketers wear pads made of condensed foam which is 50% lighter than previous equipment.

Cyclists have specific bikes for specific events. Helmets are aerodynamically designed.

Science in sportMaterials

The development of synthetic materials has revolutionised sport.SwimmingSwimmers used to wear a costume as small as possible. Now full-body suits made of lycra, polyester and nylon (all man made materials) are helping swimmers become more streamlined, reducing drag and thus setting new world records.

Science in sportFacilitiesTennis clubs have indoor facilities where they can train all year rather than just in summer.

Stadiums have retractable roofs.
